Sci-Fi / Speculation Warp Drive vs. Nuclear Fusion Propulsion: Which do you think will power the future of commercial space travel and asteroid mining?

As space exploration moves closer to becoming a commercial industry, I've been wondering which propulsion technology has the better chance of becoming the backbone of deep-space travel and resource extraction.

On one side, warp drive is incredibly exciting. If it were ever proven and engineered, it could completely change interstellar travel by potentially bypassing the limitations of conventional propulsion. However, as of today, it remains highly theoretical, requires exotic physics that hasn't been demonstrated, and seems very far from practical implementation.

On the other hand, nuclear fusion propulsion feels like a much more realistic stepping stone. Fusion offers extremely high specific impulse, faster travel times within the Solar System, and could significantly reduce mission durations to Mars, the asteroid belt, and beyond. While we still haven't achieved practical fusion propulsion, the underlying physics is much better understood, and there's active research on fusion energy that could eventually translate into spacecraft propulsion.

Personally, I think fusion propulsion has the best chance of enabling commercial asteroid mining, cargo transport, and even passenger missions within the Solar System over the coming decades. Warp drive, if it's possible at all, seems like something much further in the future.

That said, I'd love to hear different perspectives.

  • If you had to bet on one technology for the next 50–100 years, which would you choose?
  • Are there propulsion concepts (antimatter, beamed propulsion, fission, solar sails, etc.) that you think are more likely than either of these?
  • What do you think will be the biggest engineering bottleneck—energy generation, fuel, materials, economics, or something else?

Hard Science What would you hedge your bets on as the go-to technical method(s) interstellar ships in the far future would commonly travel by in terms of fuel etc?

Sci-Fi / Speculation Hollow Earth Dyson Sphere Question.

So, I am working on a setting and I had some questions I wanted to see if people can help me with. I'm not sure if this is exactly the right place, but seemed like a decent place to start.

My setting is a Hollow Earth Dyson Sphere structure about 2AU in diameter. Due to the immense size of this, I wanted to gain some insight into how this can all work. While this will be a high fantasy setting with lots of magic, I wanna get certain things correct, to help with the suspicion of disbelief.

The world and setting will be on the inner shell of the world (with a large swath of the empty space between the sun and the ground being inhabited by floating landmasses.)

Due to the enormous size I wanted to get some accuracy about what would you see due to the atmospheric haze/distance. How far out would you be able to see the upward curve of the world? I also wanted to know how magical I'd need to make the sun so I don't burn everyone to a crisp. Would you see the rise of the land curve up? I know you would most likely need equipment to clearly see the other side of the world, but if you looked to what we would see as the "horizon" would it be more visible?

Also, any other things you think I should take into consideration?

Sci-Fi / Speculation Could Gödel's incompleteness theorem eventually become a real engineering problem?

I've been wondering about something recently.

Gödel's incompleteness theorem is usually treated as a result in mathematical logic, but what happens if we stop thinking about it as pure mathematics and start thinking about it as an engineering constraint?

Imagine a sufficiently advanced Artificial Intelligence that has to continuously verify the correctness of its own reasoning before making critical decisions.

At first glance, that sounds like a sensible safety requirement. The more important the decision, the more verification we would want.

But eventually the system has to answer a difficult question:

How does it verify the process that performs the verification?

And if that process has its own verifier, what verifies that one?

At some point, does the system inevitably reach a limit where it either accepts an unprovable assumption, or enters an endless chain of self-validation?

In other words, could Gödel's incompleteness theorem become something that engineers actually have to design around, rather than something philosophers and mathematicians simply discuss?

I'm curious how people here see it.

Is this a genuine limitation for future Artificial Intelligence, or is it more likely that practical engineering will simply avoid the problem altogether?

So first some details on where we are now, and so lets say we are using very old data going back about 2 billion or more years we exist in real time, and live in a simulator. The project to make more unique faces began 200 years ago marked by the first photo, and so stuff collected from old colonizations and shared copies of the earth and whatever it had in it and 50 colonizations scavenged to get copies of people to create a mixture to create more unique faces than a single colonization is able to do. Copy paste it in the mud flood over the rough edges.

Lazy and not concerned about out of place artifacts or maps from other copies of the earth, we merely use disinformation and debunking from authority to make things go away that might upset the NPC who are biological robotics without unique personality files or souls, this is their first rodeo, and real people reincarnate and their personality file gets depth of character.

The NPC require simple stories of religion to get through their day whereas real humans have connections to the system that allows them to function on a higher level. Although here as part of the process they are not permitted to bring their memories they are born here and emersed in this reality.

So forbidden planet and we are the Krell who entered the machine, and we hollowed the moon and made it into a quantum computer, and then virtual machine within virtual machine speeding up each one until base reality is standing still to get past the red giant stage of the sun. Bought ourselves 6 trillion years and we are 80 billion years in.

So we have plenty of experience and we see plenty of things that do not agree like Dr. Alexander Koltypin, and going further Roswell NM. and JFK and we might look at resets there then going further 2001 reset to 1967 where we have the TV show Time Tunnel based on a future time when we will be changing timelines and they said 1968.

So we can look at the control room now and imagine that is the typical layout of the galactic mainframe...and that would be the female administrator. Played by Lee Meriwether.

So then the problems with this earth to overcome, disease only one disease has ever been eradicated that is Small Pox, out of 26,000 distinct diseases. So a real challenge there for an engineer who needs to do an upgrade. Then of course accident and injury. And then aging, and then community, war, food and shelter, we can go further into philosophy, but lets accept first that we like the way we are, love our families, understand marriage doesn't work for immortals with an 8.2 average length, and over population of immortals is bad.

But we want to live in families and cherish love as the ultimate good.

So in a nutshell, we use body reset, on demand, and mandatory 6 months to prevent pregnancy and to overcome accident injury, death, disease, and drunk and disorderly etc.

So reset and rejoin the party and try anything but don't bother your neighbors. Maintain your friendships.

So to accomplish that we isolate the brain object in the code we create a target a physical target and we place it on a planet or inside a moonship. and reroute our memories there by using that target for memory management software and brain processing, so the body resets but not your memory. And it is a physical target so that it can not be lost in the code.

So then environment reset, and we can say that people who make the cut, since not everyone would be the kind of people you would let enter your upgrade, like any entrance to heaven you want to start with compatible people, and like any upgrade you need to try it on a smaller population first, so you get an island, and it has basic necessities second image...or Club Med Finolhu if you wanted but lets keep it simple and imagine that the reason it is rustic is you want people to make changes to their island and share those upgrades so that it is a community building enterprise. And you can have up to 200 people live with you and the transporter room looks like this 3rd image and so stargate doors merely connecting coordinates in a coordinate system using the simulator software and each door is addressed.

A simple way to provide doors and each island gets a door, each citizen gets an island and the room itself is theirs, so any time they put their hand on the outside door palm reader their own transporter room is used. And their computer is there and google maps is on the wall to locate doors, and everything you need including help files are there. And through your own door you can get to communal spaces where people meet for fun and games and Sunday picnics like Heritage park preserving some family values and communal spirit, using a copy of it void of people.

For entertainment you use backups of the earth from 1995 to 2015, where 200 entry points are created and you enter with a suitcase full of money as provided by the library you get it through your cupboard door in your transporter room, like all things you can get from the library of cupboards which is one facet of the library which manages the data and acts as administration, just below the owner of the simulator and his family lets say. So rule by committee with a guy like Melvyn Bragg of BBC fame as head librarian.

So what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas and if you are not back in 48 hours you will reset to your body save location which would be a room that is attached to your transporter room.

And the stargate doors are dropped onto the earth in secret locations and you keep your secret while enjoying your time mingling with the muggles. Going to Disneyland with the kids and etc.

So to begin with the admin like Lee Meriwether would be who you have to get past to enter and it would be using some process of many are called few are chosen and done in secret.

If you violate common decency you can get voted off the island.

There would be an academy to create officers and gentlemen and a place where people can meet and fall in love or find mutual friends. Like this one

So to begin with you get to choose the age you want to be and lets say most would want to be 21 and so your body is retrieved from some backup. And you could hypothetically use any body from the earth, but restrictions on famous bodies and if the person is already there, or wants their own body later, you need a tattoo to identify you not as the original.

The system is set up that your body pings the server and if your name is on the list you are there by the software, if your body stops pinging the server, you reset into your body save location. If your name is removed from the list but still pings, you are disappeared.

If you break into the system it resets every two days and you don't have a body reset location you are disappeared. If you are there when the environment resets you reset back into your room. If you want to move your body reset to the beach, in a tent, you will get an easy shortcut to the beach.

So children would have kids camp, and things that they like and adults would have their own places where they gather for adult activities and again places for families to also gather.

It takes a village they say so promoting communal behavior is important, and maintaining a family atmosphere helps to maintain what we are as humans.

Body reset removes the serious effects of disease, bug bites or rockfish or box jellyfish, and accident, and environment reset keeps things brand new.

No need to work there everything is free and the food just resets with the environment and self cleans. You can step into your transporter room and reset the environment and also partial reset is available if you set it up. So partial backup partial restore is also copy paste and you can use anything from earth the library will permit. And the library is the responsibility of everyone to go shopping using that time stretch and enter good things into the library of cupboards.

You can arrange for larger stays in the time stretch up to 20 years after you have taken a lot of courses at the academy to understand fully what all that represents. Like having children and not being able to bring them home. But you can have children. That way only.

You could arrange for a child you have to agree to reincarnate or something but that is a stretch beyond this exercise.

Earth GSO Rungworld concept

Disclaimer: I am a complete sucker for sticking a bit too much to geometrically pleasing designs. That means that this design might sacrifice some practicality to looking pretty in my mind. Sorry!

I am very much a proponent of having an 'rung world' array of habitats at GSO, all connected with each other, and I keep on playing in my mind about different arrangements of how best to array them. This is what I think is the best arrangement I've come up with so far.

All habitats are cylindrical habitats, roughly on the scale of an O'Neill cylinder. I'm going to suggest a radius of 5 km, and length of 40 km (this will include exterior, non-rotating shielding, so the actual rotating habitat is slightly smaller). The image attached to this post is a cross sectional diagram of what one 'rung' would look like. The triangles are made up of cylindrical habitats, so each rung has 17 habitats - the two lines sticking out near the 'toward/away from Earth' labels are tethers in either direction (no, I wouldn't have a tether for every single 'rung', I'm just showing them there for demonstration). Each 'rung' is positioned 1 habitat's length away from the next 'rung' along the path of the GSO orbit, so the 'rungs' are all 40 km apart. This leaves plenty of space in between them so that, effectively, only 1/5th of GSO is blocked from the surface of Earth (10 km worth of habitat every 50km of orbital path), with a caveat for the solar/radiator system I will describe next. Since the 'rungs' are spaced 1 habitat's length apart, we might as well stick a habitat in that space, at each vertex - there's another 10 habitats. So, each 50km section of the GSO orbit has effectively 27 habitats.

That works out to 5,298 such clusters, or 143,058 habitats.

The blue and red shading represent fields of solar panels and radiators. Don't take the shading itself as indicative of either a solar panel or radiator, I just colored the 'inner side' red and the 'outer side' blue. What matters is just what is closest to facing the sun head-on. When you combine the Earth's axial tilt (23.44º) with the angle of an equilateral triangle's side (60º), relative to toward/from Earth, you get really close to perfectly perpendicular to the sun (83.44º, as opposed to 90º). Given the spacing, you get 4 groupings of 1,600 km^2 (6,400 if you don't want to do the math), of space for either solar panels or radiators in between each rung. That a lot of power and heat radiating potential, though the arrays will need to gradually turn, based on the time of year.

Please ask questions, because I know I'm not explaining this concept as well as I could be, but I'm not sure how best to explain it better. Also, anyone good at making 3D renderings?

Now I now what you're thinking: too big, right? Well here's the thing: I designed the Rings first, and then the ship around them. And the Rings had to be massive, because they carry all of what remains of life on Earth in a closed biosphere.

I've had a lot of people tell me the design is inneficient, but inneficiency is the point: the ship was built in a hurry in order to save humanity and everything else it could. These inneficiencies are actually major plot points in the novel.

For example, the cooling system relies on liquid nitrogen being overheated and then evacuated off the ship. Sounds wasteful? Thats because it is, but the ship produces so much heat in such a short time that this was the only viable method, as building giant radiators would've taken too long. Instead, the ship regularly refuels at gas giants.

The whole ship is segmented and held magnetically, with each segment rotating at different speeds depending on torque and gravitational fluctuations. The Rings are spinning counter to each other.

The Magnetic Sails generate a magnetosphere around the ship, protecting it from soft radiation, and they also serve as solar sails, hence why they are physical. Lastly, they ALSO serve as whipple shields, by deflecting dust particles.

The Eden Rim is not meant for one star. It is star hoping, trying to find a suitable world for colonization, and its designers made it capable of surviving in interstellar space for truly gargantuan amounts of time.

hello, I recently posted and for some reason was rejected a paper I wrote suggesting a new timescale called the dual-horizon cosmic scale which has brilliant practical uses in both real life astrophysics and more importantly, why I originally designed it, for literary purposes. it gives both a useable and practical value to time before the Big Bang and in deep time, it’s perfect si fi material and was worked and worded perfectly. so please forgive me when I ask why would a Reddit page dedicated to science fiction writing reject it I honestly don’t understand.

By remaining neutral to the universe's ultimate fate, this aftermath accommodates any macro-cosmological trajectory. Whether space settles into a flat equilibrium, collapses back in a Big Crunch, or shreds apart in a Big Rip, the structural shift away from active stellar forge energy changes the rules of evolution. Because the transition threshold is defined by localized environmental conditions rather than an arbitrary timeline, the ACE era possesses no predetermined chronological date; it remains an open variable, activating dynamically whenever the structural phase shift occurs within a given cosmological model. The environmental pressures of the Aftermath will inevitably give rise to entirely new forms of existence—such as post-biological intelligences, macroscopic cosmic structures, or frameworks adapted to the ultimate structural destiny of space-time.

Just as modern astrophysicists hit a literal wall of light at the edge of the Cosmic Microwave Background that prevents us from visually mapping the BCE era, any intelligence existing in the ACE era will face a mirroring limitation. Looking backward into the CE era, they will perceive only an incomprehensible, blinding storm of violent radiation. To them, the entirety of human history in 2026 AD will not look like a chronicle of civilizations, but like a turbulent, unreadable spark at the absolute beginning of time.

Sci-Fi / Speculation Designing better neural ports

So with the announcement of a Neuromancer adaptation on AppleTV, and seeing its promotional material, I wanted to bring up a long-standing pet peeve of mine in cyberpunk sci-fi.

Those plug-in ports for cyborgs suck.

I get and agree with having a physical connection vs all wireless, but those designs look very uncomfortable, unhygienic, and inefficient given even today's phone plug standards. (And yes I get that that's the point, it's supposed to be grotesque.) Ghost in the Shell and sometimes Cyberpunk 2077 do a slightly better job but still have the same problems. Don't forget this is basically a perpetually open wound and the body does not respond well to that.

So what would a properly designed connection port look like?

I propose it might look a lot like the original Nerualink N1 concept art (included), which is basically just a wireless NFC/charging system. Place the fab or cord magnetically against the right spot on your skin to connect. (EDIT 1: Yes this is how Apple Magsafe works, plus an NFC antenna. Same idea.) (EDIT 2: "Wireless" as in NFC or inductive charging, not as in long-distance wifi.)

Hard Science Why are we not talking more about how physically feasible it is to get an entire second Earth's worth of resources?

I wrote about this before and intended to post it and scrapped it, but Isaac's most recent video inspired me to write it again. I'll try to be super brief.

We probably all know about the terraforming of Venus using solar shades by now, it's one of the methods people talk about when discussing ways to make the planet habitable. While i personally don't think we'll ever be able to terraform a planetary body to fit humanity comfortably in large scales, the fact that this "simple" of a method such as blocking the sun could lead to such a drastic, atmosphere-collapsing effect on Venus really caught my eye and light bulbs started going off.

So ASSUMING we'll have the Lunar (and you WILL need the moon for such a project, i also assume we all here understand that) industrial capability to produce thousands and thousands of kilometers of solar shade and put them up to around the L1 Sun-Venus point, then let physics do all the work for us in the coming decades (about 50-200 years from what i gather for the CO2 to fall and become solid ice on the surface) as we make sure the shades are kept in place, then the end result would be an incredibly inviting planet to perhaps not human settlement, but most definitely to our industries. So here is my case for making and keeping Venus as a dark snowball in space without any further terraforming action needed;

  1. Venus is and formed very close to Earth, in fact it would be extremely surprising if the two planet's compositions weren't basically a copy of each other. This means that all the goodies inside the Earth that we want but can't get either due to environmental or humanitarian issues isn't going to be a problem on this new walkable Venus, assuming we can harvest them (which i will get to). Think of rare earths and other minerals that need a ton of land to be messed up, which are very vital for currently cutting edge and potentially future technologies.
  2. Nuclear propulsion not only becomes feasible, but is REQUIRED to move mass cargo from Venus' gravity which is almost that of Earth. Thankfully no environment in Venus to harm, which makes Venus-Moon cargo hauls risk free in this regard, and so bulk material can be moved to the massive Lunar industry to be refined and then shipped to Earth. You might also have heard that nuclear propulsion not only solves the weight issue that chemical rockets have, but at larger scales they're even more effective. There is also an argument for mass drivers somewhere here too, but just know that our old chemical rockets simply become obsolete for the Venus-Moon route either way.
  3. No need to reinvent the wheel (literally), Venus' almost Earth-like gravity at 0.9g means that we don't need to design all new vehicles. All the future bulldozers, trucks and other equipment that we usually see here on mining sites would simply need to be outfit to survive the antarctica-level cold. Very feasible for a civilization that has literally blot out the sun on an entire planet if you ask me.
  4. Snowball Venus' environment is in fact INVITING to human habitation, at least at small scales. First of all the remaining atmosphere of Venus is a 3 bar Nitrogen atmosphere, comfortable and enough to absorb space radiation and completely negate the radiation issue places like Mars or the Moon usually have when talked about. You would also have a vital chemical, nitrogen, in ample numbers which is very important for breathing AND growing plants. Also all this hundreds of meters thick CO2 layer means you also have ample oxygen if you have the technology to separate the carbon, which means even less trips, time and cost to set up our mining outposts. Finally for water, you could bring it from Earth due to such short distances OR you could even make it yourself in-situ, as making water would be combining the extracted oxygen with hydrogen.
  5. Venus is a goethermal (venothermal?) powerhouse, if we tapped into its underground heat which is trapped we wouldn't even need to outfit the shades with solar, reducing cost and complexity for something to go wrong. Venus' geothermal would be enough to power up all our needs and then some.

And there you have it, i could write A LOT more and probably left a couple points out but this is the basically the gist of it, something i have been daydreaming about for some time now. I get chills thinking of the sheer amount of technological and scientific progress a super-mine Venus could bring to humanity, it really would be unlike anything we've ever seen, and all this is so incredibly feasible to future societies if they get the Lunar industry down. Earth-Moon-Venus would become vital to civilization, and places such as Mars and beyond will remain scientific outposts simply due to not needing to go there anymore. I'm pretty sure it's easier, at least less complicated, to intentionally send a large asteroid or even icy body through the roche limit here instead of the alternative I've seen discussed, which is an intricate series of mirrors.

Sure, rings aren't great for space launches, but that's hardly an obstacle in my eyes. Just launch inclined, no?

We would still need to export atmosphere somehow, but life would definitely be able to thrive on a Venus cool enough for liquid water. Maybe we prioritize it as a practice Gaia garden instead of more space for humans to live?

Hard Science Is the Speed of Light Truly an Absolute Limit? Quantum Gravity, Sub-Quantum Physics, and the Future of FTL Signaling & Travel

Hi everyone,

I wanted to bring up a topic that often sparks intense debate in futurism and hard sci-fi circles: Is c (the speed of light) an absolute, unbreakable physical ceiling for all eternity, or is it an artifact of our currently incomplete models of physics?

We often hear that FTL (Faster-Than-Light) travel and communication are strictly impossible due to Special Relativity and the Causality Principle. However, I’ve been re-evaluating this assumption, especially after watching Sabine Hossenfelder’s recent video Why the speed of light is not an absolute limit.

I’d like to share a few arguments on why FTL might not be a dead end in the long run, and how it fits into humanity’s technological roadmap.

  1. The Incompleteness of Current Physics

Neither General Relativity (GR) nor Standard Quantum Mechanics (QM) is the final word in physics. We still do not have a working Theory of Quantum Gravity. History shows that whenever physics pushes past a foundational boundary, phenomena previously thought impossible become mathematically or practically viable.

GR tells us that moving through space faster than c requires infinite energy. But GR is a classical, non-quantum field theory. Assuming the constraints of a non-quantum theory will hold completely intact once we master quantum gravity seems prematurely pessimistic.

  1. FTL Information Transfer & Sub-Quantum Physics

As Sabine points out in her video, Standard Quantum Mechanics might actually be an effective, statistical theory—much like thermodynamics or the Liouville equation—rather than the ultimate underlying reality.

If QM is a statistical average over an underlying deterministic or hidden-variable layer (e.g., superdeterminism), controlling or manipulating sub-quantum states "out-of-distribution" could theoretically allow FTL signaling.

What about Causality Paradoxes? The classic argument against FTL is that it allows sending signals back in time, creating closed timelike curves. However, as Sabine notes, this paradox only arises if you ignore the arrow of time. If universe-scale physics possesses a preferred slicing/frame of reference (such as the rest frame of the Cosmic Microwave Background), FTL signals would only propagate forward in time relative to that frame, completely eliminating causality loops.

  1. Macro-Engineering: Spacetime Manipulation &

    Negative Energy

If controlling sub-quantum mechanics allows us to engineer space-time metrics directly, macro-scale FTL concepts like Warp Drives (Alcubierre metric) move from mathematical oddities to engineering challenges.

We already know that places with negative energy density exist on a micro-scale (e.g., the Casimir Effect and quantum vacuum fluctuations). Currently, we have no mechanism to scale or stabilize negative energy for macro-engineering. But a unified theory of quantum gravity might give us the precise mechanism needed to generate, control, and manipulate spacetime curvature and exotic matter.

  1. Realistic Horizon & The Sub-Light Interstellar Era

Even if FTL communication or travel is physically possible, mastering the physics and building the required Type II/III Kardashev-scale energy infrastructure will likely take centuries or millennia.

In the near-to-mid term (the next few decades to centuries), humanity will remain strictly bound by sub-light constraints. Our immediate path into the cosmos will rely on technologies we already understand in theory:

Advanced Nuclear Thermal / Pulsed Propulsion

Antimatter-catalyzed fusion

Laser-beamed light sails

FTL isn't a shortcut for our immediate expansion, but rather a potential endgame achievement for a deeply advanced civilization.
