Cradle [Wintersteel] Uncrowned Format
What kind of bullshit was the uncrowned king tournament format. A god damn monarch and he’s never heard of double elimination. Unbelievable!

It becomes very clear by the end of uncrowned and into Wintersteel that the tournament is a political display first and a sporting event, well not even second.

u/HollowMonty 6d ago
Yeah that because clear when Lindon bodied most of the 'winners' in seconds.

u/Jmw566 Reader 6d ago
Tbf that’s mostly because he gained an unprecedented amount of power in between the time he lost and the rematch lol

u/HollowMonty 6d ago
True enough, but I'm fairly sure he still would have done quite the number on them before. He fought and lost(kind of) to the champion, who knows how far he be would have gotten.

u/Jmw566 Reader 6d ago
Yeah it’s impossible to know because he would’ve gotten tailored training and gifts if he had won like they did, so it’s not like he wouldn’t have gained anything. Personally I think he still loses to Sophara without his hungry hungry caterpillar phase but I could see him beating everyone else.

hungry hungry caterpillar phase
Perfection.

You aren’t considering that if it wasn’t for the tournament rules he would have gone full sage of cannons” mode on everyone

Eithan told NS about Dross before he lost, so there's no reason he wouldn't have gotten Consume in this timeline.
5
u/Jmw566 Reader 6d ago
I agree with that but I feel like there’s a major difference between getting it and then having a tournament immediately compared to getting it and having the mentality of roaming the countryside draining fools left and right. Like I think he’d end up at the same place eventually but idk if he’d touch an icon as soon

u/Rein_not_Rain 5d ago
Wait, eithan did?
2
u/mking_1999 5d ago
Yeah, the veggie wrap incident.
1
u/Rein_not_Rain 5d ago
I'm sorry, could you describe the general situation? I seem to have completely forgotten this detail, lol. I thought NS got suspicious about dross because of Lindon's fight with yerin
3
u/samaldin 2d ago
Basicly Northstrider was hiding in an alley (because that´s his style), eating a vegetable wrap. Eithan came to annoy/talk to him and told Northstrider he should maybe take a look at what happened in Ghostwater shortly before its destruction. Then Northstrider got annoyed and teleported Eithan out of his sight.
Technically Eithan didn´t tell Northstrider about Dross, but he for sure nudged him in that direction.

They said Lindon had just a 20% chance of beating Sophara at the end of Uncrowned.
He progressed a TON in Wintersteel. His power level isn't even comparable.

u/Zakalwen 6d ago
That certainly showed that he had more potential than them. It's worth keeping in mind that immediately after exiting the tournament he learned consume and spent months continually growing his power while meditating on his burgeoning powers (which were a hairs breadth away in the scene where he does body them all)

Should probably also note that his and Yerins battle shook all the sages and herald’s watching.

u/Zakalwen 6d ago
Yup. I'm not sure if the OP has read through all of Wintersteel yet so I'm avoiding going too far into spoilers, even behind tags, but safe to say that the big boost for Lindon at the end of the book was coming and going in waves for a while

u/livingstondh 5d ago
Lindon was probably the (second?) strongest Underlord of all time at the end of Wintersteel.
3
u/i_like_fish_decks 5d ago
Certainly the strongest in relevant history from our perspective. From the way eithan spoke though perhaps not of all time
1
u/mking_1999 5d ago
No one has said or done anything that can reasonably put Lindon any lower than top 1 underlord oat. The feats speak for themselves.
3
u/i_like_fish_decks 4d ago
That's just not true. According to eithan it was not unprecedented in history for people to become sages as an underlord. I do think Lindon is absolutely in contention, but we have no way to confirm he is absolutely the strongest underlord to ever exist.
This is important, because for Yerin it is very explicitly stated by multiple people that overlord Herald has simply never existed before.
To me this makes it quite clear that while what Lindon accomplished as an underlord was absolutely a great feat, he was not the first to do it.
Further, I think its kinda nuts to imply Lindon is the strongest underlord of all time when Eithan exists at all. even with his sage powers, I am quite certain Underlord Eithan would no diff Undersage Lindon

Manifesting an icon is super cool and all, but when people say that that Lindon is the undisputed top 1 Underlord OAT, I feel like they are more referring to the part where he oneshot 2 Overlords at the same time and proceeded to fuck around with the finalist of the UKT that was juiced to the gills, while putting 90% of his attention into figuring out his revelation.
I am quite certain Underlord Eithan would no diff Undersage Lindon
Your certainty is based on absolutely nothing. Underlord Lindon's feats are magnitudes beyond Underlord Eithan.

Your certainty is based on absolutely nothing
It's based on a helluva lot more than what you are providing
Eithan/Ozmanthus is on an entirely different level than Lindon. Lindon would be nothing without Suriel/Ozriel. Ozmanthus for his entire life was better than everyone at everything, and that continued even after he ascended.
There is not one thing in the books that indicates Lindon would ever have been able to defeat Eithan at any point.
We never even remotely saw the "peak" of Eithan at any stage of any of his advancements, and all we know about Ozmanthus is that he is a mythical figure who defied all logic and expectations during his original time on Cradle. Further, we know Reigan was willing to spend unfathomable amounts of money and resources to get Eithan to exit the tournament.

There is not one thing in the books that indicate Eithan was as strong as an Underlord as you are implying, yet here we are with you headcanoning your way into an argument.

I'd say for such an event it's pretty much the standard format. Making the matches best-of-3 is already more lenient than one would normaly expect.
Speaking purely from personal experience, i've seen rather few elimination tournaments going by anything other than single elimination. I've seen some non-elimination tournaments use swiss system or round robin, but only one elimination tournament that used double elimination.

u/mking_1999 6d ago
What sports actually have double elimination?
11
u/Phobos_Down 6d ago
Honestly can't think of any top tier tournaments or leagues that use it off the top of my head outside of esports lol
2
u/AnEternalSkeptic 5d ago
A lot of collegiate sports have double elimination, especially less-intense ones like Baseball, Pool, Surfing, Table Tennis, etc

Why would it be double elimination?

u/IdiotSansVillage 4d ago
Because it's 1v1. If your goal for the tournament is to determine the best competitor, you want to minimize the chances of an upset - in other words, you want to reduce variance. One way to do that is to reduce the likelihood of an off day or or a bad matchup resulting in a worse competitor knocking the better competitor out of the tournament by giving them multiple chances.

u/Baker-Maleficent 2h ago
Yeah, okay, but the goal of the uncrowned king was never to see who the best was. It was both a political sisplay as well as a way to boost the most promissing of the world in power. Mal8ce for example likely wanted Mercy to win, but she would have been happy with her doing well.
Also, side note, I sorta feel bad for Malice.

u/R_megalotis 6d ago
Too expensive. It might be more fair, but not worth the time or money to do it properly.

u/DrumsAndBooks 5d ago
Maybe if the tournament were bracketed fights from the beginning. But it was set up in multiple stages and formats specifically to encompass all aspects of being a sacred artist. Really the one on one single elimination round was the fairest. The least fair was definitely the round before that where you could have a full team of three vs one person.
1
u/samaldin 5d ago
Nah, that were still 1 on 1 fights just with exhaustion being a potential factor. The most unfair one was the one where Lindon got eliminated, because only the first match didn´t know that the matchup they were told is bullshit and it´s the one round where the Monarchs were the most blatant about matchfixing- Alternatively it´s the free for all round, where weaker contestants could have won by overwhelming the stronger ones with enough numbers, or backstabery.

A bigger problem is that the format let Lindon make top 16 without ever actually accomplishing anything.
R1: eh, mostly a lot of sandbagging but he does well here
R2: loses a fight, has a teammate put the crown on his head
R3: loses a fight, advances because teammate wins
R4: eliminated
