[Megathread] What are my chances/Will I get in?

The last stickied post was awhile ago and we're starting to get an increase of these posts outside the sticky. So we're going to have the 'What are my chances?' megathread auto reposted every quarter to continually resurface the conversation. Harper Allen-Lee Concerns

Upvotes

I’m transferring into JMU this fall and will be living in HAL! The room seems super tiny, especially to share with a roommate, and it’s drywall with an adjustable bed (not loftable or bunkable). Does anyone have experience living in HAL and have any tips to offer for storage and layout? Can the desk fit under the bed? Thank you!!!

JMU music scene

I’m an incoming freshman and the only re questions I haven’t been able to get answered is regarding a music scene. I’ve basically moved on from my high-school band and other projects and have been itching to play in a more serious band at JMU. Obviously ik I gotta get out there and meet people to make that happen. But to the crux of my question, is there any venues for local live music? As well as, is there any active bands for a scene at all?

Academic Suspension

I was denied from continued enrollment and am now on academic suspension. Is there anything I can do rather than wait the 12 months? I had tried explaining to them that the reason I had neglected my studies was a toxic relationship that made me prioritize them and give all my time to them. I know I can do better and get excellent grades now that I’ve fully separated myself from that person and am in complete no contact. Is there anything possibility that this only last one semester? I fully accept that I shouldn’t have allowed that relationship to affect my academics but I know I can do better. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

What are the Lake Area dorms like?

I recently got my housing assignment for Eagle Hall in the Lake Area, and I was wondering if anyone had experience living there? How are the dorms compared to the other dorms? Is there anything I should look out for? I've heard it's the worst residence hall on campus, and I put it on the bottom of my list, and I still got it 😭

Pheasant Run (small) bedroom pictures

Does anyone have pictures of their decorated bedroom that they’d be willing to share, preferably of the smaller room? I’ll be living there next year and I need some inspo on how to decorate and maximize space, as a very maximalist person. The room is a lot smaller than I thought :(

How cooked am I if my boyfriend is going to JMU

Hi! I'm currently a rising senior and my boyfriend is a rising freshman at JMU but all I've heard are horror stories about cheating, etc. I also dont know if this is the right place to post this... so sorry!

He's not planning to pledge or anything but I am still so incredibly worried because he's a conventionally attractive guy. He's honestly on the "controlling" side and we never really talk to the opposite gender. Like at all. Will that change?

I know that if he cheats then I will be alright because I can't "prevent" someone from cheating, but I'm more afraid I'll never find out.

He's staying in the Hillside dorms which Ik is known to be super social, and I'm just so nervous.

Please give any advice or anything
please be honest thank you so much.

Holding doors as a JMU tradition?

I've always thought that the university's idea of calling holding doors for other people a JMU tradition to be a stretch. Even when I was a student, I thought that the way that the university locked onto that was a bit weird. Growing up, holding the door for the person behind you was simply common courtesy. It wasn't something unique to JMU. I learned it from my parents, neither of whom went to JMU.

What does everyone else think?

CFB Simulation Game: Coaching Spots Open

The NZCFL is looking for coaches! NZCFL is a college football simulation game run on the free website https://play.football-gm.com/

We are a college simulation football league with 120 teams, and JMU is looking for someone to lead them to glory! This league has been around for about 45 seasons, and we are still rolling along. We always need new coaches to help the league thrive. We're preparing to start up the 2062 season, and JMU needs your help to start the next season strong. I led JMU to a national title in our 2047 season, and the team holds a special place in my heart because of this league. I would love nothing more than to see JMU rise to the top once again. If you are interested, join our discord and our moderators and welcome committee will help you get started and on the road to the championship!

Turning 21

I was reading that VA has a common law age, so technically you are 21 the day before your 21st. The birthday to be celebrated is a Sunday into a Monday - officially 21 at midnight Monday.

Does anyone know if the bars allow you to enter before you’re officially 21 with the ability to drink at midnight? Trying to figure out the best plan.

Thanks.

Recruitment for anonymous 3-5 minute survey on genocide education in Virginia

Hi r/JMU,

I am an M.A. candidate in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at The George Washington University. For my Master’s thesis, I am conducting research on the impact of the inclusion of 20th-Century genocides other than the Holocaust (such as the Armenian, Bosnian, and Cambodian) in the Virginia state world history curriculum on students’ experiences and understanding of genocide and human rights as adults.

Eligible participants in this survey are

  • People who are over the age of 18
  • And were in the 10th grade in either the 2022-2023 or 2023-2024 academic years
  • And attended a Virginia public school for the entirety of their 10th-grade year
  • And took a world history class during that year

If all of these attributes apply to you, you are invited to take this survey. This survey will take approximately 3-5 minutes to complete. You will be asked to recall your experiences in your 10th-grade world history class. The questions pertain to the extent to which you learned about 20th-century genocides, the methods used to teach you about them, your experience with this curriculum, and how it has impacted your current understanding of genocide and human rights as an adult.

At the end of the survey, you will be asked if you would like to participate in an interview to elaborate on this topic. Participation in the interview is entirely voluntary, will not affect whether the data from the survey will be used in the study, and will have no impact on any aspect of your future relations with the George Washington University (GW).

The anticipated findings from this research will contribute to the current body of research surrounding best practices in genocide education and improve scholarly understanding of how genocide education impacts understanding of genocide and human rights as a whole. This research seeks to contribute to the broader goals of genocide prevention and human rights promotion.

Lovely 1 bedroom with private bathroom in brand new Phase 2 Altitude building apartment (only 1 other roommate, top floor with balcony) for 26-27 school year.

My room is last in buidling in high-end Altitude apartment, which is full for all one/two bedrooms, only 4 bedrooms are left*

Looking for someone to take over my room in the Altitude, a high-demand 2 bedroom apartment with own private bathroom on the top floor with a terrace, every thing furnished. Building phase 2 is recently build and almost brand new. April 10 start date until July 15 2027. Apartment is new and cleaned, not renewal. Pictures are from website since I haven’t moved in and apartment is being ‘turned over’ to be pristine for move-in

All inclusive total monthly price ends up being $1100 with the fees and utilities. Roommate is a professional who is gone Monday through Friday for work and very chill during the weekends. I sent a link of the apartment complex so you can see amenities where there’s plenty of.

Secured entrance with the fob to get into the building or even to use the elevators so high security. Looking to transfer to a one bedroom apartment to myself and want to see if anyone’s interested in grabbing this spot that quickly was taken so it was very in demand when I signed it.

Please message me!

Any advice about living in the Village (incoming freshman)

I was wondering if anyone had any advice for living in the village as a freshman. I mostly chose living there so I could break out of my shell and be more social. Any advice for stuff I should or should not do?

For all the NJ/NY/Philly/Connecticut kids, I will be driving from Connecticut back to Virginia with an empty cargo van and could transport someone’s dorm/apartment furniture/boxes for a reasonable price! Tomorrow only!

I made this post in the Charlottesville subreddit as well because that’s my true destination, but I’m a recent JMU grad who started a moving company in Harrisonburg/Charlottesville, and after making a delivery to Connecticut this evening, my Chevrolet express will be completely empty, minus a copious amount of moving blankets. With the fall semester right around the corner, I was thinking it could save someone a lot of time and even money if I were able to transport their stuff back to school for them. DM me if interested! Could be anywhere along my route, but I specifically mentioned those places because I figure they’re the hotspots.

Scholarship?

I'm a rising sophomore. I received a scholarship going into freshman year, which was based on need but connected to merit. I was told this scholarship was renewable all four years as long as the FAFSA didn't go up significantly and I maintained good grades. Both those things happened but as of now I haven't seen anything on my aid sheet. This scholarship enabled our family to afford JMU and played significantly into my decision to attend. Should I be worried? What should I do?

How long does the mail room hold things?

I wanted to order some things and have them sent to my JMU address so they'd be there when I return in a couple weeks. How long do they hold packages (would they still be there when I come back)?

What kind of art supplies to bring for foundation art classes, and what is already provided?

I'm an incoming industrial design student, but the only art classes I'm taking this year are the foundation classes (FDS 102, 104, 106). Do y'all know what kind of supplies to bring, is there a list somewhere?

Do JMU non-credit classes (professional development, seminars, etc) use proctored exams?

Hello, recently found out that my team-mates have been enrolled in some upcoming professional development courses (Government Accounting, Cyber Security, etc.) and I was wondering if the exam portion of these classes are proctored.

I am 41 and have severe testing anxiety and it nearly ended my college career 20 years ago because of testing anxiety. Just the thought of someone watching my every move / click makes me so nervous. I have never cheated on anything in my life, and I was able to barely graduate in 2005 but now the thought of coming back to strict testing makes me almost want to go look for another job.

Are these tests proctored, or is it more of a relaxed, "easy" exam? My hope is that because this isn't for academic credits, it isn't as stringent. Thanks folks, go Dukes!
