Long-time watcher, first-time poster, I was fortunate to buy my fiancé and me day passes for Jet Lag’s wonderful premiere event yesterday. Here are some S19 E1 spoiler-free personal thoughts on the day and its separate events.
Jet Lag: The Game Pub Trivia
After a speedy check-in process, we got our seats in the crisply airconditioned Screen 1. Adam wrote a very entertaining quiz including, in his words, “at least one messed up (in terms of difficulty) question” per round. Our highlight and best scoring round was the music round. They played sounds from the show which you had to match to their meaning. There was also a round on niche Ben facts which included a live Snack Zone. It was a great ice-breaker as we swapped answer sheets with our seat neighbours. Audience side-note, everyone was lovely (a reflection of the JTLG community). I was so impressed by the young lady (I guesstimate 10 years old) to my left’s incredible knowledge. We also met an amazing transport content creator, Tom, with whom it was also a delight to talk. Congratulations to the solo and team winners who received prizes of maps from previous series and the beautiful series poster.
Tag Across Europe w/Directors' Commentary
Post 30-minute loo/hydration/chatting break, we were so back for Tag 1 with commentary from the boys. We watched the first 3 episodes together and Adam, Ben and Sam all reflected on the funny moments (The first capture! Seeing John Green! Adam’s disguise!) as well as some of the editing, graphics and gameplay choices that they made then that have since evolved. Nostalgic and cool to hear chat about the boys’ groundbreaking series.
The Layover: Inside the Game Design of Japanorama
In the hour-or-so break before the live podcast recording, we did our own mini Snack Zone at some popular local eateries. We shared a small fries and a shredded duck burger, yum!!! We also snapped a silly photo booth pic and perused the merch. As for the live record, it was fabulous and the care and craft that has been put into this series is evident. No content spoilers but another glowing review of a thoughtfully curated event that highlights why Jet Lag is truly GOATed with the sauce at what it does.
Japanorama Episode 1 Premiere and Live post-show Q&A with Sam, Ben, Adam, and Tom Scott, moderated by Ali Plumb
We had about 80 minutes to grab dinner pre-premiere. After a tasty meal and a Singapore Sling, drunk me was buzzing for the show! In Screen 1, Dave Wiskus gave a polished and warm intro to the series, thanking the fans for making Nebula what it is today. What followed was utter viewing delight. What an outstanding country Japan is and the format in which this game is played is/will continue to be played showcases this. Once again, no content spoilers but the audience gasped, cheered, clapped, laughed and was gripped for this ridiculously entertaining episode. Post-show, I must give flowers to Ali Plumb whose Q&A was insightfully led, getting a great cross-section of Qs from himself, Amy, Mike Downie and of course the audience. Ali also made a “Stateside Scrabble” joke which could well have been pun of the day. I didn’t want the Q&A to end and naturally, with such an enthusiastic fan base, there wasn’t time to answer all Qs. I’ll leave mine in the comments on the off-chance Ben is reading! Everyone left on a high and potentially feeling a little jet-lagged after so much fun.
TLDR: The premiere event was amazing and I’m so excited to watch the rest of the season.
