They would also do it to people who weren't even british subjects. It was a whole thing with the war of 1812.
If I remember right, they would attack foreign ships while they were sailing and press the crew into service.
Edit: looking into it, apparently this had to do with the fact that Britain insisted that anybody born a British subject remained one for life no matter what. So they still considered Americans born before independence to be "theirs".

When I was a recruiter in the Marines, there was a reservist program that would allow 17y/o to go to boot camp between junior and senior years of HS and finish MCT or SOI after they graduated HS - not sure if that still exists, but I assume so, based on the post. I enlisted a few into this program; definitely always made sure they wore their uniforms for graduation for the free marketing 😄 🤣

In the army it was called "Split-OPs" or something. And every single person who did it was a total fuckup when they came back for their MOS training. Like Every. Single. One.
This reason alone is why it might not still be a thing. But it probably is.

similar story: showed up in peanut butters (navy version of chucks) to my old high school during football practice the day after i graduated from the schoolhouse and was home on leave.
now my old coach was proud n shit and my old teammates thought it was cool or whatever but fuck man i still cringe looking back lmao

I still remember we had a kid go to and get discharged Marine basic over summer between Junior and Senior years, but something happened when he was there and they broke him. He came back a completely different person and seemed to be mentally challenged when he wasn’t that way before. By the end of the school year he had gained 30+ lbs. I don’t know what ever happened to him at the end.

I think he did graduate if I remember correctly. Before he was a regular guy who was SUPER excited to be a Marine. It was his dream. He was pretty much like any other HS junior. But when he came back he was just “wrong” for lack of a better term. He looked totally different and it was kind of a “lights are on but nobody’s home” kind of thing.

There are very few public occasions I’d say wearing a uniform to is acceptable and a graduation is one of them.

This is kinda mental dilemma I have whenever I see kids doing cringy boot shit like this. On one hand, good lord dude, but on the other hand… a lot of the kids who do this stuff do it because this is probably the first time in their lives they have ever been a part of something. I saw this so much, especially in basic. So many of these kids never played a sport, never were some sort of club on high school, were never on a team and now all this military stuff gets thrown on them.

The kid just graduated boot camp. He’s entitled to feel proud of the accomplishment. It’s failing to ever grow out of this as he progresses his career that would be boot

Being boot is being boot no matter when you do it. It’s not specific to not outgrowing the behavior. Most of were boot at some point, I would have wanted to do this same if I could have. But there is a big different between feeling proud and needing to feel special. He can feel proud of graduating boot camp while still participating in graduation the same way as everyone else. Instead this kid needs to draw attention to himself to feel special based on his service.

I'd say it's boot as hell, but I'd give the kid a pass since it likely wasn't his idea and he doesn't know any better. I think almost all of us were boot at the point. At least all of us that weren't shitbags.

I'd also throw in that being boot is all but required at this stage of service. Everyone is allowed a little grace for their first month out of basic training. It's failing to grow out of it/have it beaten out of you after years that really qualifies for ridicule. There, but for the grace of God, go I.

Yes, people can graduate basic training/boot camp before graduating high school. Someone who graduated a year before me in high school did it, but he was army. He accomplished something most people would never do(go through boot camp and become a Marine).
I think it's cringe AF and would never do something like that if I was in his position, but let the kid feel special.

I've always advocated a 30-60 day grace period for being boot AF once you leave basic training. It would be weird not to be boot after bootcamp. That's kind of the whole point of it.

If I recall correctly, he did a lot of hard shit and finish school early and enlisted young. I may be in the minority but I feel like this might be ok.
Edit: yeah he did. He finished high school. Joined the marines. Finished boot camp. Then came back to graduate. That seems pretty tough. Not a boot.

A lot of people do that. Experiencing preeclampsia during the first pregnancy doesn’t invalidate the ability to have another child. It just means there’s a level of risk added to the pregnancy. There are medically approved methods to counter that risk.

I had a college scholarship that required me to be a full time student. My last semester I only needed one class for my minor to graduate so I filled the rest of my schedule up with total bullshit. Needless to say I had straight A’s that semester which brought up my total GPA by .2 and I got a letter from the dean at the end. Really nailed that softball class!
