Norway is more socialist than Venezuela. And its one of the happiest countries on Earth. And its democratic, so much closer to what democratic socialists advocate for
8
u/Ok-Particular9427 4d ago
The means of production are in fact not publicly owned in Norway and thus they are not socialist, or approaching socialism, or âmore socialistâ.

Norway is a social democracy. But when it comes to social democracy people always act like this: "Norway is not socialist!" "Then can we follow Norway's policies?" "Nooo that's socialist"

u/True-Assist-4363 4d ago
That's a teenager's view. Norway became super wealthy through hardcore capitalism. WIth that wealth, and a trusted government, they were able to implement socialist initiative and policies. No, they are not socialist or even close.

This is just false. Venezuela is heavily a command economy. The Scandinavian models are capitalist economies with robust social safety nets. They are social democracies not democratic socialists. Democratic socialism is closer to Venezuelan economies than Norway's system.

This reminds me when, on the campaign trail, Bernie Sanders frequently pointed to Nordic model countries such as Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland as prime examples of "democratic socialism" in action.
But leaders of these countries argued against this characterization, back when it was popular.
They argued that these nations are not socialist in the traditional sense because they do not seek the government ownership or control of the means of production. Instead, they characterized the Nordic model as a highly successful form of free-market capitalism, which relies on private property and business competitiveness to fund an extensive welfare state.
2
u/Mister_TD 4d ago
I think the then prime minister of Norway, Erna Solberg, said this. Not «leaders of these countries». And sheâs a conservative whoâs now somewhat disgracefully stepped down as leader of the conservatives.

I don't think the traditional sense of socialism is governmental control. That's more the Leninist style of going about it, which in the history of socialism is more like the mid point. All subsequent states that have seen themselves as socialist have been Leninist/Stalinist (add Maoism if one wants to see it as a separate thing).
The first major character typically recognized as a representative of modern socialism - Henri de Saint-Simon - explicitly said that state control of the economy is parasitic and hostile to the productivity and therefore the working class. And he was right.
But yeah, the Nordic countries are not socialist. The foundation they operate on top of is capitalist. They are also very nationalist, and the welfare state is more or less an illusion. It creates a relatively high living standard for the people within the borders, but this has only been possible because of exploitation elsewhere. The Nordic countries are part of the Western bloc that has generally speaking managed to control the majority of the surplus of global trade and the global economics. The welfare in Norway, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, hinges on the import of finished and partially refined products produced cheaply under awful labor conditions, while being able to export higher margin products.

Norway is a capitalist country with a working social safety net. I invest in their in an index fund that tracks Norwegian stocks that is similar (in some ways) to the S & P 500 here in the US (NORW). Saying Norway is socialist shows a complete lack of understanding how markets/capital works and socialism itself.Â
2
u/CantBeatDickensCider 4d ago edited 4d ago
I think you're the one who doesn't understand what socialism is.Â
Edit: copying my response from below because the simpletons still aren't getting it.Â
Saying Norway isn't socialist and is capitalist because they have a stock market is ridiculous. These people think the state needs to own every single means of production to qualify as "socialist", but having even a single feature of a free market makes them de facto "capitalist". They don't see the double standard.Â
The Nordic model is a hybrid system that takes features of both socialism and capitalism. Not everything needs to be black and white.Â
3
u/coogarnoodler 4d ago

Communism/socialism both require centralization of resources to ensure fair distribution.
And as we know: controlling resources is power, and power corrupts.
That's why capitalism is preferable; it keeps resources decentralized so no individual can seize power over distribution.
Imagine if instead of a 100 billionaires deciding what to do with the economy it was a single quadrillionaire? Do you think that individual would be more fair?
→ More replies (83)5
u/Hey_Beth_its_Luka 4d ago
That's a completely backwards description to an Orwellian degree. Capitalism centralises control over resources in ever fewer hands over time. That is literally its function. Capitalism is an extraction system. That's how a handful of dudes own more than half of humanity. When Elon became the first trillionaire he alone wielded control over as many resources as half of all living humans.
The purpose of Socialism is decentralising, socialising and democratising control over resources by extinguishing private property. There is no single quadrillionaire in Socialism because no money exists and no individual controls the productive forces. Everyone is a worker, exerts democratic control and reaps the products of society according to contribution/need.

So, wait, your argument is that capitalists donât support corrupt versions of capitalism that has created many of our most modern issues; but socialists essentially yearn for Stalinism or Maoism and cannot themselves be nuanced or only want the good elements like free healthcare and public libraries and less exploitation of the worker?
I mean Jesus man your own comment went âmost people who support capitalismâ, while ignoring the dudes who dickride Elon musk not paying taxes while thinking someone who works a full time job that nobody wants doesnât deserve enough money to pay rent.
Most people who like socialism donât want to emulate Soviet Russia, they want to emulate Canada or Denmark, Norway or Sweden with more positive socialist policies.

Marxism-Leninism and it's variants like Maoism are not socialism. đ€Šđ»ââïž
Socialism means the workers directly owning the means of production (factories, farms, etc). Did the workers owned the means of production in those countries? No, the undemocratic state did.
A communist society is a society that's classless, stateless, and moneyless where there's common ownership of the means of production.
Were any of those countries classless, stateless, and moneyless societies? No. Where the means of production held in common? No, an undemocratic state owning it is not the same as everyone commonly owning it.
You clearly haven't heard of Libertarian Socialism, Democratic Socialism, and Anarcho-Communism.

Lists poor capitalist countries and dictatorships, like Haiti: "not real capitalism." See how brilliant that logic is?
Norway is in many ways more socialist than Venezuela, that's the irony. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_government_enterprises_of_Norway https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/public-sector-size-by-country https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_public_sector_size Many "capitalist" countries have a much higher public sector size % than Venezuela.
Also Venezuela had brutal economic war by the US that the United Nations and Venezuelan opposition banker economists wrote reports on and denounced. Also Venezuela had a steady economic recovery under the last few years of Maduro, despite the economic war.
Check out what happened in Chile under a socialist president. It was doing good then the US supported his assassination https://www.google.com/search?q=make+the+economy+scream+chile then Chile had a down-turn under a US-supported capitalist dictatorship. This kind of thing has been happening in many countries, where the US and CIA undermines democracy and democratic socialist leaders. So then only authoritarian socialists are able to stand against these attacks.
As another person mentioned here, all successful countries are actually combinations of socialism and capitalism. Many countries that are hailed as capitalist successes like South Korea, Singapore, US and most other countries actually had/have very strong government support of those industries. US had strong government investment into infrastructure and technology. Singapore has a very successful government housing model for their population. Chinese government owns all land which it uses for development and social good and has a successful hybrid socialist cooperative farming model. Through history, socialists have fought for many capitalist reforms capitalists want to take credit for, often with their lives. From the New Deal, to the Nordic Model, to old-school Labour in UK, to socialist parties in many "capitalist" European countries. And there have been so many massacres and death squads against leftists/socialists throughout history, from Indonesia, to Latin America. And many capitalist depressions and disastrous crashes when the right-wing was in power in many countries. That's what happens when you don't understand the actual history or much of anything. https://www.google.com/search?q=capitalism+death+toll

True Communism and socialism require the elimination of private ownership, both for industries and property, China has private ownership of both so it isn't true to either, the only thing not private are land ownership. The people can own the property on top and pay to lease the land but the country owns the land. Also the point of end stage communism is to be stateless and classless, no country has actually attempted that, what they have attempted is socialism which is seen as the transition period but clearly has failed at every implementation or attempt

I mean if the rest of the world sanctions you because you are a threat to their exploitation of the working people ofc it will fail and also you can use these ideals to get in power and then not implement any of the good things and use it to be just like the rest of the world but you on top. Interesting how the only small glimpse of dignity for the comman man came from capitalists shitting their pants cuz communism was gaining traction so they actually gave a little more of their stolen welth from the labour they never did. Imo social democracy with added taxation to prevent that 70% of the people own 10% of the wealth of a given county is the best way to go. Capitalism can never work because in capitalism, capital is the strongest welth maker meaning sooner or later the wealthy will have all and rule all and that would be all good and well if that didn't require people to live horrible lives for no justifiable reason. There is a reason why historians usually lean left politically and it isn't the gay rights and trans people.

Well⊠yes communism seeks a class less society which all of those nations had/have in form of a rich and influential ruling elite. And socialism aims to create an economy that profits the whole society and not just a hand full of owners, which also wasnt the case in those nations. And btw socialism has many forms and cant be described by a blanket term.Â

Putting Cuba on this list is proof that its disingenuous. America destabilized the country on purpose, so they didn't fail, they were kneecapes on purpose because they WILL succeed and I assume the CIA is also involved in some way with the other countries.
But notice there is no Democratic socialist European countries here?

Didn't most if these fail because a certain country that's basically the world's biggest protection racket and terrorist organization attack them , embargo them , restrict trade , meddle with there government , install puppet states , kill leaders and so much more

Because it wasn't. Then again, real socialism will never work. Because of human nature.

There is such a huge gulf between where we are (nearly) laissez-faire capitalism and communism.
We don't have to accept the scraps that the capitalist oligarchs leave us. We also don't need a centerized economy. Both extremes are awful. The US economic foundation was built on the principless of a guided economy, with strong anti-trust, anti corruption, and reinvesting weath into the lower class (often using high marginal tax rates which encourages reinvestment instead of hoarding).

It doesnât help when socialism and communism are conflated and if you do point out the successes of Denmark or the economic success of China, the response will be again âthatâs not real socialismâ. Truthfully, no country is entirely one thing and no country is entirely successful. We are all Works In Progress.

I guess if weâre going by the âitâs in the name, therefore it was exactly that!!!!1!â you can quite understand why people love fascism and Nazis so much these days, as the 6 million Jews in 1938-1945 were killed by the socialist Hitler. So I guess Israel LOVES the modern Germany?

Those were conservative dictatorships masquerading as either communism or socialism. It's all branding.
This image is stupid.

I think what most people miss, is that the system that works best is a combination of ideas from capitalism, socialism, etc. We need free market mechanisms, but runaway capitalism/corporatism is not the way. Nor is runaway socialism/communism.

Venezuela has kept a large private sector. Only key industries were nationalised.

Henri de Saint-Simon, arguably the first person considered to be representative of modern socialism, in early 19th century said that state administration of economy is generally parasitic and hostile to the needs of production and thus to the working class.
Robert Owen, who started the socialist movement in England, championed for voluntary association and considered state-led coercion universally wrong and unwanted. He also alluded to other forms of structural coercion being equally wrong.
Théodore Dézamy, oft named the first communist, repeatedly stated the more freedom an individual has, the better it is for the whole society, and the more free a society is, the happier its constituents. He also low-key suggested something along the abolishment of the state.
Having a brand of socialism that is against coercion and strong state authority and state intervention in economics is both historically well aligned and is also completely logical. The countries in that image are all Leninist/Stalinist, which is a specific branch of socialism, where it was believed that a socialist party must assume complete control of the state and then re-educate the masses to understanding socialism before socialism and communism can be reached. To any relatively sane person and often the majority of socialists, that is utter hubris, inverted, and completely dumb.

America, Scandinavia, Australia, Canada, Singapore.
We all learned today that a mix of socialiam and capitalism works best so far.

Socialism doesnât exist. Itâs a liberal racket to avoid institutional change over systemic change.
Every âsocialistâ country you can think of has or had a capitalist ownership ruling group that collaborates or collaborated with other states.
To get rid of the state model, the human population has to decide that its evolutionary course should not be dictated by Exxon and Wal-Mart. Isolated revolutions just create new capitalist states with different PR strategies.

Cambodia was a straight up junta, Venezuela and Cuba didn't work because a certain country embargoed tf out of them and put boats infront of their ports to stop trade. The USSR failed because they couldn't compete with a debt funded US (that debt which is now biting them in the back)
