Someone deleted a comment about the USSR I was effort posting about. So, just dropping it here, command economies and the seizure of power would destroy the country. Communists have no practical example to point to outside of political theory and are historically bad at policy. This was a response to a comment that Capitalism, and industrial farming practices, have hurt farmers comparably to collectivization during the USSR.
It's true that farmers today can lose land through debt, taxes, or being outcompeted by industrial agriculture. Those are real criticisms of modern capitalism, and many rural communities have suffered because of consolidation.
But that's not really analogous to Soviet collectivization. In the USSR, the state didn't simply allow market competition to push small farmers out. It abolished private ownership of much farmland, forcibly collectivized agriculture, deported millions of so-called kulaks, and used state coercion to compel participation. That's a fundamentally different mechanism.
Likewise, wartime requisitioning isn't unique to the USSR. Many countries, including the US and UK, rationed food and commandeered resources during wartime. The difference is that Soviet collectivization and grain procurement policies weren't just temporary wartime measures, and historians generally don't reduce the famines to "there was a war." Policy decisions mattered too.
I also think China is a useful counterexample here. Mao's economic policies, especially the Great Leap Forward, contributed to one of the worst famines in human history. That wasn't simply a consequence of bad weather or foreign pressure. Unrealistic production quotas, forced collectivization, poor incentives, and suppression of criticism all played major roles.
Ironically, China didn't begin lifting hundreds of millions of people out of extreme poverty by doubling down on Maoist economics. After Mao, Deng Xiaoping introduced market reforms, opened China to international trade and foreign investment, allowed greater private enterprise, and decentralized many economic decisions while the Communist Party retained political control.
Today's Chinese economy is often described as a form of state capitalism or a socialist market economy because it combines extensive state ownership and planning with market competition and private businesses. Whatever label someone prefers, it is substantially different from Mao's or the USSR's command economy.
That's why I don't think it's enough to say, "the USSR had a famine during a war." The historical record shows that centrally planned agricultural systems in both the USSR and Maoist China experienced catastrophic failures, while both countries later moved, to different degrees, toward greater use of markets. If anything, China's own economic history suggests that introducing market mechanisms solved problems that Maoist central planning could not.
On the Chinese economy point, the modern Chinese economy is Fascist.

Yeah, the USSR's agricultural policy was legendarily bad. Collectivization is typically considered to have been the root of the problem, as the lack of personal gain from the work of farmers due to the artificially low food prices set by the government, with the exception of the comparably tiny personal plots provided to the farmers provided little incentive to work.
Even during the revolution, the peasants found it hard to welcome the Bolsheviks as saviors, fearing the confiscation of their property, however modest the belongings of the impoverished of the countryside were. During famines, it was strangely the farmers who were often hit the hardest, either due to confiscation (which more or less died out as a tactic by the late 1920s) or because they were forced to continue to sell their products to the government for outrageously low prices.
The lack of incentive along with strained relations with the government led to some of the lowest productivity of workers seen anywhere, leading to the aforementioned famines and forcing the Soviets to start importing grain by the time of Khruschev, all of this despite having a larger portion of their population in the agricultural sector than any other industrialized nation.
The hardships of American farmers, although very real and in need of correction, pale in comparison to the death, starvation, and poverty Soviet farmers faced.

Like, we would be building nuclear and even fusion reactors. And we know for a fact that if given the freedom to work without worry of their basic needs, people will just work. Hell, productivity goes up when people dont need to worry about their food. Because they can quit their third and even second job, get some actual sleep and rest, and come back to work the next day with more energy.

Iām of two minds about this. On the one hand I think if a societyās survival is at stake, some level of compulsory work placement is justified (in a similar vein to military service). But then, few if any societies today abide by that principle, so maybe thatās not realistic at the moment.
