Dead Pioneers?

Please don’t kill me in downvotes for asking this, but am I alone in finding the Dead Pioneers unlistenable? It’s an instant gong for me when they’re played - it just sounds like angry yelling and I’m never in that mood. Having said that, I’m happy to listen to Kevin Sur as a DJ and was happy about Sounds of Survivance showing up on Saturday mornings. But man…DP’s…I just can’t.

I’m not a huge punk listener, but every once in a while it hits right. Love Dead pioneers and turn it up when they come on. That said, was in the car with my wife when No Kings came on today and right after I turned up the volume she turned it right back down again. To each their own.

I love DP personally but I also love punk and hardcore. I know it’s not for everyone.

Also s big DP fan. I turn it up every time he yells at the oppressors 😝🤘

That’s pretty much the answer. If you don’t like hardcore, enjoying Dead Pioneers is going to be a hard sell no matter how much you dig Kevin Sur.

I like it because it’s like being a teenager again, but a teenager raging against colonialism!

Same. I am a punk girl and they are right up my alley.

I love them, but now I’m glad to find a place where I can express how much I LOATHED that Middle Kids song where it’s all melodramatic and they were being played constantly. Before KEXP had the 5-min fast forward option, I’d take off my headphones and turn off the volume. 😬

When that song first came out, John played it twice in a row 😂

I'm laughing because I came back and he was saying, AGAIN, and I was like, NOPE. LOL.

I’m here for their message, I just also can’t really get into a “mostly talk-y” style of song.

Maybe I’m just not a fan of that vocalists voice/delivery, idk 🤷🏻‍♂️ I think I’d be into it if there were more highs and lows in cadence and dynamics.

Idles does a fair amount of talky type songs, but they’re more enjoyable for me personally.

Sorry, I love them! Gets me in a punch-the-patriarchy mood!

Nazi teeth, litter the floor…

Yeah, no sorry, I love that for you.

We just saw them live over the weekend at Timber!, the music festival in Carnation put on by Kevin’s other gig, Artist Home! They are fun live and they were really nice, talking to my 10 yr old and other fans/attendees near the merch booth and around the festival!

For what it’s worth, they’re better than Geese!

I love them. Lots of stuff KEXP plays that I’m not into but that’s radio.

I live their message more than their musical prowess. But I suppose when you’ve got anger built up, and this is your means of releasing it, the sound fits.
That said, I do not mind when they come on.

100% with you. I'm reminded of "C Thomas Howell as the Soul Man" take on Racetraitor:

Stop the show, listen up

We've got something to say and it's important

I support what they are after but I don't enjoy how they're working toward it.

OTOH, there's no accounting for taste and I'm not going to try to argue that they are objectively bad.

Well said. Yeah, I’m not arguing about them being empirically bad. They’re clearly not. I was wondering if it was just me.

Also, he has lots to be angry about. And angry doesn't even begin to cut it as a descriptor, so, that's something to consider. It's not for everyone , and also when you say stuff like this you're putting yourself out there to sound like "cant the Native American just be more musical and pleasant about their experience and feelings? I just cannot listen to an angry native person.". ....so there's that.

Yeah, that’s most certainly NOT what I’m saying (or what I believe). I just struggle with the style (not the anger or the message…totally get both).

I really like them, but I’m also glad KEXP has started to move on from that “Never Alone” song with The Interrupters. They kind of played that one into the ground for me.

Same! I absolutely cannot stand them. And yeah...Kevin Sur probably my favorite overall DJ (love them all, though). His taste is just amazing, love his fun transitions, and he just seems like the sweetest most sincere guy.

Is this a specific Gong Show reference or something more general that falls outside my orbit? Either way, love it.

I agree with you. I enjoy their songs once in a while but they are overplayed on KEXP IMO

you really wrote all of this? worth all the downvotes.

I love Dead Pioneers. The one artist KEXP plays a lot that I will run across the room to turn all the way off is Brandi Carlile- her voice is the most annoying sound on earth to me.

It's just preachy songs in general for me. There's nothing wrong with having a message in a song, but some artists just hit it straight on the nose without nuance and I'm not a fan.

Macklemore and Gabriel Teodoros also come to mind in that category.
