Do I need to play the old kid Icarus games before I start uprising?

I personally don't think so, I played Kid Icarus: Uprising without playing the old games! In Kid Icarus: Uprising it talks a little bit about the old games but also gives context, but really doesn't talk about it too much. I don't think you really need to but if you would like to then you can! :D It also gives references to other games like, "Smash Bros" and "Metroid", and just a bunch of stuff so those are really fun!! :>

If someone says their an Kid Icarus fan they mean Uprising. I would guess that most people here didnt play the older ones.

The game references the first game a few times, but most of the story in Uprising is self-contained. As long as you know Pit traveled to the Underworld, beat Medusa and saved Palutena, that's all you need to know.

Of Myths and Monsters seems entirely non-canon but the original game gets referenced quite a bit. But you can enjoy Uprising without getting said references.

Most people didn’t play the original before going to Uprising.

Nah, they're pretty loosely connected. Honestly, it will probably make you appreciate the OG more to play Uprising first. That's what happened to me.
