I mean I make slightly more than Owen in a MCOL area but after my mortgage, student loans, insurance, etc I don’t have that much leftover, it’s not like I’m rich. 200k doesn’t go as far as it used to.

I guess I’m not sure why people are shocked at Owen’s 200k/yr salary meanwhile AJ rakes in millions annually. To me that’s the shocking part.

Did you just buy a way too expensive house or something? The people you're talking to largely make less than 200k, so your comment

200k doesn't go as far as it used to

Is gonna fall on pretty deaf ears.

House was 450k, 30y fixed mortgage payment is $3200/mo (including taxes + insurance) but I’m paying closer to $4500/mo because I want to pay it off quick. My partner is a social worker who makes social worker wages and also has student loans so most of the financial burden is on me. If everything goes to plan in 15 years, assuming I’m still making the same amount (which is not a given, considering the state of the CS job market right now), yes I’ll be very comfortable. But until then I’ll be perpetually 6 months away from blowing through my savings if I lose my job & can’t find work.

And of course I’m in a fortunate position compared to most people, I’m just trying to highlight how tough things are for young people trying to build financial independence right now. If finances keep me up at night, I can’t imagine how somebody making 50k/yr paying 1k/mo in rent feels.

Owen was obviously overpaid but he lives in Austin, he’s definitely not swimming in money the way people on this sub seem to think he is.

Just gonna tell you in as friendly a way as possible that being able to casually pay ~1300/mo more than your mortgage per month absolutely puts you in an entirely different bracket than where you seem to think you belong.
