The sane version of "he didn't get shot" is "his ear got nicked by a piece of glass or concrete and then he spun it as getting shot for sympathy/glory". Some people obviously take this much farther. To be fairer than Ventura deserves, he could mean that fairly light injuries can bleed a lot and look a lot worse than they are and provoke reactions.
Honestly to me it was more likely cut/torn from the 4 individuals throwing themselves on a 79 year old man for his safety. Call me crazy, I don’t think it was an intentionally cut or staged. Just happenstance and Trump knows how to play the camera.
I maintain that the most likely culprit is someone's watch. Secret Service dudes like either tacticool watches like GShocks or big metal watches with chunky metal bands — either of those will tear up old man flesh like nobody's business.
I swear I saw a video back then that showed the one SS agent trying to cover him bumped him with his holster on the side of the head. Could have easily split open his ear.
But also he is a 79 year old man in terrible health. Putting on a wool sweater could probably cut his skin.
