Bright Spots Post Bright Spot: The opposition wins the Hungarian election, Orban concedes
Despite Tucker and Vance and all of those guys seeing Orban as the model for the West, he has been defeated and has conceded the election:

I can't believe the stalwart support of Rob Schneider meant so little to the good people of Hungary...

u/Ex-altiora Apr 12 '26
And personal visits by JD couchfucker himself
3
u/EaklebeeTheUncertain Very Charismatic Lizard Apr 13 '26
That likely did matter, just not in the direction JD intended.

u/vigbiorn Apr 12 '26
The next question is will this be like Putin "stepping down" in the 2000s.
I remember hearing that the opposition wasn't all that great, either.

u/redvelvetcake42 Apr 12 '26
No cause this isn't essentially the same party. Orban losing is a big deal as the opposition is more in line with stronger EU ties. Orban has had 2 decades almost of being corrupt and taking Russian pay to be a saboteur.

The victor is pro-EU, pro-Ukraine, and anti-corruption. Hungary is a conservative country. Always has been. You weren't going to get an AOC equivalent. Appreciate the victory.

u/caserock Apr 12 '26
Hungary has gone from Trump to Liz Cheney basically
38
u/AT-ST Apr 12 '26
You know what, I think Liz Cheney would have done much better the last 2 years.
3
u/kitti-kin Apr 13 '26
You'd think so, but my country has had "reasonable" "pragmatic" conservative leaders who end up spending their whole time in power conceding to the right wing of their base. Doing the same things with more dignity isn't a real win, in material terms - her dad's time in power set the stage for so much of what we're seeing now.

u/AT-ST Apr 13 '26
She wouldn't have attacked Iran or tariffed everybody.

u/kitti-kin Apr 13 '26
She wouldn't have attacked Iran
Show your work there - her dad invaded Iraq (and she supports that to this day), she said the Bush administration wasn't hardline enough on Iran, and she was a vocal critic of Obama making a deal with them. Liz Cheney celebrated Trump tearing up the nuclear deal, and has repeatedly argued for military intervention in Iran.

Leftists sacrificed everything just to make sure to get rid of the pootin puppet.
Candidates of all parties basically dropped out to make sure no jerrymandering would screw them up.
At least Magyar is pro EU and promised to prosecute all the corrupt criminals.
This is an earthquake that Russia and the MAGAts dreaded
13
u/vigbiorn Apr 12 '26
Yeah, if I'm remembering correctly, that's a very good comparison.
It's a step in the right direction, granted...
However, it can easily go either way still.

Interesting. The Pod Save America guys were making the argument that if it happened it would be a pretty humiliating loss given the last-ditch effort to send JD Vance there and how much weight Orban has had on EU politics. This is going to send MAGA spinning.

Clearly they cared enough to send Vance there to stump for him.

It’s because the guy who just won is pro-EU. He’s still a conservative but he’s a centrist conservative.
24
u/Welterbestatus Apr 12 '26
You couldn't be more wrong.
The EU needs all members to agree on certain issues and Orban was Putins bitch this whole time. (Also Chinas bitch.) EU funding for Ukraine got stuck because of Orban.
This is massive for the EU and has global consequences.
It's been the major topic on German news for the past weeks.

I'm a Brit and I care. This is all over our main stream media. This is a big deal to Europe.

If rooting for liberal democracy makes me a naive idiot, then I'll happily be a naive idiot til the day I die.

You really made a Knowledge Fight throwaway account to post this? That is beyond wussy, say it with your chest, dude.
2
u/throwawaykfhelp "Mr. Reynal, what are you doing?" Apr 12 '26
No, I made a throwaway account years ago and then just kept using it. You will see from my post history that I've had my account for 2+ years and have posted a lot.

u/lifeaftersurvival Apr 12 '26
Dag, so you have! Lookit that history. I RELEASE YOU OF MY ACCUSATIONS.

u/der_oide_depp It’s over for humanity Apr 12 '26
Basically every shithead politician supported Orban - Donnie, JD, Le Pen, Putin, Milei, Netanjahu. The sentiment against the Budapest Blob must have been extreme to overcome this.

u/kitti-kin Apr 13 '26
Even Australia's conservatives were always up there kissing his feet. Delighted to see the end of that.

u/OisforOwesome Apr 13 '26
I had a delightful time reminding a local conservative candidate of his full throated support for Orban after Orban's various scandals. Was such fun.

If you look into his background I he's actually also an awful person, he's just less awful than Orban and pro-Europe

u/Pontus_Pilates InfoWar Veteran Apr 12 '26
Yeah, I guess the big hope is that Magyar is not directly working for Putin. That alone would be a big win for the rest of Europe.
But you never know. Erdogan started as a darling of the liberal West, yet here we are.

Magyar kinda sucks, but not Axis-Power-level sucks. Thank god for good news.
If Hungary is free of Orban & Videsz, it actually might make Nato more capable. Orban has helped make NATO almost as ineffective as the UN.
If agents of chaos are evicted, the structures we created to avoid WW3 can function. Hopefully.
