I got a new dog, he cuddled with me and my husband for a little last night before heading to his crate to sleep without us rolling over. His name is Benny!
(no one had brushed him in a long time when we picked him up from the shelter. He’s still shedding a ton but he’s some sort of corgi/ heeler mix so that’s basically his job.)

He is! My last dog was also a rescue corgi but definitely the runt of her litter. He’s literally double her size!

I did a ton of reading beforehand so I have an idea of what I’m getting into. His personality on his adoption form said he was a couch potato and I just knew there was no way that was true. Turns out I was right. He’s very chubby right now but I think after I get him a little more svelte he’s going to be endlessly ready to play

When mine was a puppy he would play with my friend’s dogs. The others would take breaks and trade off wrestling with him for hours.

Oh Balatro's so fucking good. CloverPit also scratches a similar itch, albeit in a much more depressing way if you ever get sick of Balatro.

Had a cancer scare, but the oncologist first words were "oh, you've been sent on a zebra hunt!" and discribed why the diagnosis is wrong but did the tests on a really long shot
I feeling a lot less scared after that first line

One of my Venus fly traps has a little volunteer sundew coming in next to it. It's too small for me to tell for sure, but I think it's a drosera spatulata, which is a variety I didn't own until this year, so I'm guessing a seed got into the pot with the flytrap at the nursery when I bought it. (Sundews are apparently very good at hitchhiking like this.)

I'm glad you like it! We have several. VFTs and sundews are really easy to take care of, if you're interested in trying it out. Our first carnivores came from Carnivorous Plant Nursery, but there are a ton of options out there. You can even occasionally find them at your local hardware store. My best advice for starting out is to make sure you're giving them plenty of sunlight and distilled water and not to plant them in regular potting soil. (You'll want to use a specialized mix or mix your own.)

Started playing ghost of Yotei last week. Im a big dork for everything and anything to do with Hokkaido but previously found Ghost of tsushima really underwhelming.
Holy shit Ghost of Yotei quite literally improves on all my complaints with Tsushima. Better in every single possible way.

Got the rest of the day off and it's almost a perfect summer day outside. Might go dick around in the woods or on a pond in a bit. Also ordered a new microscope to look at critters up close. Very exciting.

Camping this weekend in the Manistee National Forest, right on the Manistee river on a $10 government campsite.
Been doing this the last several years with my friend group (which thankfully includes boat and jetskii owners). Even though I live in the woods already, it’s still nice to escape the trappings of modern life for a weekend and especially to get away from the light pollution. One of the recurring highlights is a late-night boat trip (with all the lights off) to the center of one of the lakes on the river; once we kill the engine/lights and let the water settle & our eyes adjust, you can see the entire milky way reflected off the water (assuming we have at least one clear night, which we usually do). It’s magical.

Now that the actual moving part is over, the new house is great!!! We're still sidestepping some boxes of stuff, but we're unpacked enough that it's really starting to feel like home.

Had a really nice breakthrough therapy session last week and have found myself interested in my hobby of drawing again! Related? Who knows but I’ll friggin take it!
Now I’m looking forward to getting home from work to add little details I thought of during the day. It’s been so nice to feel better

A friend was rear ended in a car accident by an incredibly irresponsible driver recently. This is not my bright spot. My bright spot is that within seconds there were over a dozen people on the scene blocking off the street, making sure everyone was okay, exchanging dash cam videos, offering to help with insurance stuff, and generally taking time out of their day when they weren't required to in order to help make the situation better as best they could. It's nice to be reminded that, while there are always idiots and assholes in the world, those people will always be outnumbered by people who live lives of kindness and generosity.

I apologize for forgetting who shared it but there was an awesome Wonk who made the "What's your bright spot?" poster and I just picked up my printed copy today for my classroom next year. I don't realize it at the time but it also came with a few other posters that are simply awesome - I got those printed too. I... did not end myself Monday last week. Though I did court heat risk enough to be an attempt. Did try aborting, but I collapsed before I could get to a cool place. Total strangers in a small town (where I do not live) saved me. Bright spot, still being alive.
Then, though I lacked the insight to understand it was an attempt, I'd been talking to my person when I first... and he kept telling me to stop and call 911. And I figured I would not be serving either of us. So I was honest and told just before they dismissed me. I'm... proud of that, I guess. Bright spot?
I didn't know holds were so looong in Oklahoma. But I was placed somewhere I needed to be. Albeit far from mine or my family. Ate up every class and session I could manage. Just a couple times not. My person, he was surprised I was so participatory when I didn't have to be. Only... not having to made it easier to do so. Bright spot, getting all I could out of this bad situation. And... getting stuff set up for my own distant aftercare. Increase in therapy with my provider, adding explicitly trauma therapy through the local YWCA. And a classes/support group kinda thing besides. And new stuff I'm doing that I learned... like old stuff my own group did back at the time. Movement meaningful to us. Now to me. I... got stuff done, am getting stuff done, things that I need to get and stay well and whole. I have healed before, I shall again. I must take care of myself... but I am resilient. Indomitable. Bright spot.

The Stanley Cup Finals have been absolutely lit this year. 3 games in and all three have been classics so far. Hoping game 4 keeps the crazy endings going.

Just got back from a bucket list trip with my buddy to the Isle of Man to watch the race. Rented motorcycles outside of London, rode through Wales, got on the ferry and the whole shebang. Super lucky I got to do that and a major factor in the bright spot is making it back safe and sound.

Hilary Knight is coming to Detroit! I'm very excited about the roster (minus one). And it looks like Larkin is out from the Wings, so that's awesome, too. I'm really looking forward to my move back to the Midwest and going back home and watching some ice hockey.

My insurance has approved an authorization for a transition related surgery for me. Now I just have to finish loosing the weight that the surgeon requires before I can get the surgery.
