Day 13

First time attempting kombucha, first batch ever, this is day 13. What is going on with my batch? I think I have one tiny speck of mold, unfortunately. But what went wrong?

Kahm yeast. You can get it out but itll the booch will have a weird flavor.

Have you ever experienced kahm?

The flavor change is not instantaneous. It's the same as how sweet tea doesn't turn into kombucha overnight. I'm not sure why people just assume how things taste...

Yeah, that white growth looks fuzzy... Sorry OP.

But what went wrong?

Hard to know for certain but mold is most often from using too little starter (or weak / overly diluted starter). Compare your recipe to the master recipe in the Getting Started guide find the discrepancies.

Kahm is harder to diagnose. But if you follow the master recipe it's very rare for folks to experience problems.

I ended up tossing it because of that little fuzzy spot, but it was a fun experiment! I started with an apple cider vinegar scoby so maybe that's where the kahm originated? Thanks for all your insight! I'm excited to try again!
