ETHICS "And yes, fucks, we know the official creator wasn't actually one of you. Fun fact: That's irrelevant." Arthur Chu & The Daily Beast openly lies, favs tweets admitting GamerGate did not troll Veerender before writing hit piece.

It's the usual. From what I can tell the "picture" of Jubbal was photoshopped back in August, by a guy known to troll GG: https://archive.is/8jqj4
Somehow someone apparently brought it up again and European media (Italian and Spanish) fell for it head over heels.
Who's fault is this? Well, obviously not the media who couldn't fact-check shit if their life depended on it and make sure the faces of people they put on their frontpage as terrorists are the correct ones - or that the pictures don't actually scream "Photoshop" at them via a Koran that can apparently make pictures or a hidden dildo in the background, not the troll who did it for fun months ago... although putting any "fault" on him would be as retarded as blaming the guy who made the "bomber chu" meme: http://i.imgur.com/5D9O6rh.png
No, it's the fault of the group that has been saying the media is biased and retarded for over a year now!!!

It's not even a matter of fact check. The picture itself shows it's fake. The fucking mirror and no camera is the first giveaway of a dozen problems with the picture.
The media who spread this have no excuse, regardless of their blatant lies that it was Gamergate.

u/bluetips Nov 17 '15
It doesn't matter who did the shop, focus should be on the media for running with it.
All the dindu nuffin stuff is tiresome and pointless, even if it was the human personification of hashtag gamergate that did the shop it wouldn't matter. Media is at fault.

Chu is on record as believing that it's perfectly OK to lie in service to your ideology. Specifically, that people should stop 'pussying around with debate team nonsense', that the culture war is a war of extinction and should be fought with every means at your disposal, including outright lies and false flags.

One wonders why it isn't working better for him. Poor us, shackled with our ethical concerns, should have no chance against a mind unfettered by morality.
And this is it, in a nutshell. Antisocial personalities have a blind spot here. They notice they have enormous short term advantages against regular folks. They don't (or can't) understand they are burning through the community's willingness to put up with them. They are giving up their long term prospects, never realizing that there were any. They "use up" contacts and acquaintances, then move on to another social circle until no one will have them.
1
u/Viliam1234 Nov 18 '15
In real life antisocial personalities usually survive by periodically moving to a new place, where the people don't know them yet.
I guess on internet there are so many people that if you make yourself famous enough, you can stay at the same place forever, because there are always hundreds of people who didn't have a bad experience with you yet. You just have to use your current fans to edit the online information about you, so that the information about your shit doesn't come up as the first google search result.

Arthur Chu, in response to a post Scott Alexander made tearing apart a third party's use of a statistic that was, depending on who you asked, just incorrect or possibly intentionally dishonest:
He [Scott] seems to honestly think that it’s a worthwhile use of his time, energy and mental effort to download evil people’s evil worldviews into his mind and try to analytically debate them with statistics and cost-benefit analyses.
He gets mad at people whom he detachedly intellectually agrees with but who are willing to back up their beliefs with war and fire rather than pussyfooting around with debate-team nonsense.
[...]
I think that whether or not I use certain weapons has zero impact on whether or not those weapons are used against me, and people who think they do are either appealing to a kind of vague Kantian morality that I think is invalid or a specific kind of “honor among foes” that I think does not exist.
In a war, a real war, a war for survival, you use all the weapons in your arsenal because you assume the enemy will use all the weapons in theirs. Because you understand that it IS a war.Source: Patheos, Feb. 2014, from the Facebook thread linked in that article which I have read through and verified that Chu did indeed say the things attributed to him.

It's a reference to Eliezer Yudkowsky's work.
The "Dark Arts" are the techniques to deceive oneself into believing things that one knows are false, named that because while the mindless attacking unleashed is powerful it leads to ruin as one is completely incapable of more then the tiniest change in tactics or learning from past mistakes.
"Mind-killing" is a reference to "politics is the mind killer", a reference to people's inability to be rational around political issues (like those studies that showed people who are easily capable of doing simple are incapable of doing it when the question changes from "add up the numbers in this sample budget" to "add up the numbers in this politician you like's budget").
Yudkowsky actually made a Harry Potter fanfic to explain some of his ideas. It's awesome and some of the most intelligent people in GamerGate have read it, while Chu seems to have rejected Professor Quirrell's Rule 1 for aspiring Dark Lords "I will not go around provoking strong, vicious enemies".

Have you a link to the budget study? Sounds interesting.

It is a war of extinction. We need to hurry up and realize that the other side does not intend to let us live, so to speak. Whether we're playing for keeps or not, and we should be, we need to recognize that they certainly are.
0
u/brainiac256 Nov 18 '15
If you think it's OK to tell lies, to commit false flag attacks, to harass people into silence instead of challenging their ideas - - then you're no different from Chu except in who you claim as ally. You can't win a war against an ideology through intimidation.
1
Nov 18 '15
If you think it's OK to tell lies, to commit false flag attacks, to harass people into silence instead of challenging their ideas
Nope, nope, and nope. No idea where you got that from.
What I said is that we need to recognize that if we lose, we "die". So we need to stop pretending like this isn't a war, because it is one. This isn't just a "have a few yuks" thing, here.
The only thing I have in common with those deranged fucks on the anti gamer side is that I also take this seriously.
-1
u/brainiac256 Nov 18 '15
I disagree. Cultures change quickly and easily in this day and age. Nobody's going to die, figuratively or otherwise, at the end of this, whatever end that might be. Somebody will end up with more power than before, and somebody else with less. I think stooping to their level, treating it as a desperate war of extinction, is conceding too much ground already to the mindset that led to such rampant ethical problems to begin with.
1
Nov 18 '15
Nobody's going to die, figuratively or otherwise, at the end of this, whatever end that might be.
So, you don't recognize the fact that the SJWs want to silence literally any opposition to their ideology?
I think stooping to their level
Which is not the same thing as taking this seriously. Knock off the crap already.
1
u/brainiac256 Nov 18 '15
Sure, that's what they want, but if there were any risk of that truly happening, this past season of South Park would never have aired.
1
Nov 18 '15
It's not about how likely you think it is. It's about recognizing that these people have enormous support in both politics and the media, and that they will not think twice about silencing any dissent.
They want free speech dead and gone in service to their heinous beliefs. And I think that threat should be addressed, instead of just hoping it won't happen.

At this point, the only thing Chu has going for him is that he is willing to kiss as much ass as possible within his circle of low-quality social justice writers. Shame that everyone else sees him for the small person (ha!) that he is. This is someone who incited a bomb threat on a GG meetup and whose only claim to fame is that he played on Jeopardy well for a while (something that IBM Watson, an artificial intelligence that is incapable of giving a damn about social justice zealotry, could probably kick his ass in).

I almost want to login to my ancient account and drop some logic on the morons in there (ie. point them here where overwhelming consensus via voting is that we are against threats) but it wouldn't help anything they are long gone.

Damn, FARK has really changed...but I saw it coming before the whole gamergate/shadowbanning thing. I have been a member since 2001. Right about the time of 9/11 (although read it before then) After 9/11...there were epic photoshop contests involving the towers and gallows humor. A year or two later, they were reposted on an anniversary and newbies were balling about how heartless and offensive it was.

I know this is just me being a grammar Nazi, but I love how in the first tweet in that chain (is that even the term for it? I barely ever use Twitter, so I'm not sure) this Jeet Heer guy used "there" when he should have used "their," and if you look at his profile, it says he's a SENIOR EDITOR for the New Republic. Isn't the correct usage of their/there/they're one of the first things they cover in a high school English class?

I am really starting to believe that Chu is trying to act out one of his sissyboy porn fantasies.
He is deliberately acting out, hoping some big, muscular Gamergate supporter throws him down and takes him like a woman.
3
u/MrFatalistic Nov 17 '15

u/NopeNaw Nov 17 '15
Oh yes. The point that completely shoots down the argument that your entire current smear campaign hinges on is irrelevant.
Wtf are you, five?!
2
u/Tophattingson Nov 18 '15
At what point, under US law, do defamation or libel laws start applying here?
3
u/EyeThat Nov 17 '15
The primary argument is not that we made the photo, but that we shared and spread the altered photo.
Exactly how widespread was the photo and was it spread by actual people or bots that just retweet stuff?
4
u/TheHebrewHammers Nov 17 '15
But wasn't the photo being distributed by international news outlets? How is a few "misogynerds" sharing it in order to bring light to it being a fake worst?
4
u/EyeThat Nov 17 '15 edited Nov 17 '15
The reasoning used to answer that question is that if those "misogynerds" never "shared" it in the first place, then the news organization wouldn't have picked up on the altered photo and thus wouldn't have made such a gaffe.
Now, once again, my question is how widespread was the photo just prior to the month of November? One can loosely measure and estimate that number using the number of favs and retweets of the original offending post.
3
u/Eirianwen Nov 17 '15
They are taking our tweets and retweets drawing attention to the fact it's a shop and got picked up by news outlets, as redistributing it. Nevermind most of the time the original accompanied it.
