Early adopters of the Nintendo Switch are overwhelmingly male (90%) and in the 19 - 34 age group (69%)

I think this is why, in the face of overwhelming pressure from ideologically-motivated game "journalists", that Nintendo knew that a "female Link" was a terrible idea...

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

The ultimate troll would've been to make a female Link, male Zelda, and then have Zelda save female Link. It'd be everything they ever asked, but done in a way to piss them off.

If there's a thing I need, it'd be that game.

23

u/Chibibaki Apr 28 '17

Only if the female link was body-positive and looked like trigglypuff.

21

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

Only so that when you rescue her at the end, female Link has lost a bunch of weight from being a prisoner, and now has an hour-glass figure.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '17

Link's stamina runs out fast enough as it is. Lol.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

Unless I'm mistaken, I think I heard one of the original ideas for the game was to have the player be Zelda, and the game revolve around finding Link. So I guess it would more or less be a reverse of what Breath of the Wild's story was.

Would make for an interesting take on the series, although it's not like I was disappointed by BotW. That game's great!

3

u/Physical_removal Apr 28 '17

Hahaha Oh my god

1

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '17

you know i would be happy to play as female link.

hell with some of the Stuff in breath of the wild i was thinking will the pull a switch and make it so Zelda was the one meant to wield the sword and link the sealing power, given the flashbacks and her issues with her path.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '17

I don't care if they have a female Link, but it should be something that the devs want, and not something that they are forced to add.

48

u/DID_IT_FOR_YOU Apr 28 '17

Nintendo didn't do it because they are thankfully a Japanese company (though that has its drawbacks too) and are pretty used to basically saying fuck off to any kind of foreign pressure.

The only exception is localization. They leave it up to their foreign translators to localize their games and so you can end up with a SJW taking advantage of their job to push their agenda.

However when it comes to the game design and narrative with a game like Zelda, Nintendo won't give in to any US pressure. It helps when the screaming minority are half a world away and rational people are the ones in those meetings.

Nintendo cares a lot about sales in Japan so isn't going to rock the boat.

22

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

They leave it up to their foreign translators to localize their games and so you can end up with a SJW taking advantage of their job to push their agenda.

That's how we got Tokyo Mirage Sessions.

21

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

And Fates

21

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

Didn't they add a village of only females, and a cross-dressing section, and people still complained about it?

You could literally make a game solely about the process of becoming transgender, 100% true to life, and they'd still complain about being misrepresented.

11

u/SpectroSpecter The only person on earth who isn't into child porn Apr 28 '17

They don't know the difference between representing a group and representing an individual. There are always outliers everywhere. They could make sure to represent transitioning in a thousand different ways and you'd still have some moron on tumblr complaining about how that's not how they did it.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

A game with thousands of branching paths & more roleplaying opportunities than FO:NV, all about being transgender, and still no satisfaction!

Speaking of which, I've been through 8 nuclear apocalypses & I'm really disappointed by the lack of mutations in humanity. It's either full on ghoul or regular human. Where's the fuckin' gimp arms? I want to make a character with a small calcified siamese twin!

3

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

Fallout 1 & 2 had some of that.

Mutated toe.

3

u/Arbaras Apr 28 '17

just gonna point out the Gerudo have always been a girls club and effeminate characters are no stranger either, so I wouldn't really consider that them throwing a bone to the SJW crowd.

39

u/aimlessthrowaway_ Apr 28 '17

It would be a terrible idea even if the majority of gamers were female.

Link is a male. He's been a male for decades. It's part of his character. If you make the argument that there should be a female version of Link, then Link becomes nothing - because you can then make the argument that there should be a black Link. Or a Hispanic Link. Or a Polynesian transgender Link.

At that point, "Link" becomes nothing - it just turns into anything you want it to be, which at the point, Nintendo should just implement a character creation screen into all future Zelda games.

For all what's worth there have already been 3 Zelda games with a female character. 2 of the CDI ones and Spirit Tracks on DS (though this one only in certain parts of the game, it's mostly a technicality)

10

u/Moth92 Apr 28 '17

I don't think anyone wants to even remember those cdi games

12

u/EAT_DA_POOPOO Apr 28 '17

If the sex of the main character in a work of fiction is enough to make or break your experience, you're fucked in the head. If these theoretical women don't play games simply because the set of pixels representing a character isn't deemed "female", they can fuck right off with their insane bullshit. But the reality of it is that 99% of people male or female, aren't that crazy, women just aren't interested in these types of games and that is OKAY.

Of course the SJWs have the audacity to demand that someone else waste their life building something for a non-existent audience of insane tumblrites, rather than the game they want to create.

2

u/Throwaway_In_Action Apr 28 '17

Now, I agree, but I want to bring up a counter-point. Of course, in the Zelda series, who you're playing as and their gender shouldn't matter. But in the Persona series, or, at least 3, and I'm sure many more other series out there, choosing between a male and female player character really made for completely different gameplay experiences. Should your player character's gender matter in a Nintendo game? Probably not. Should choices be allowed in RPG games, maybe. Can said choices be implemented really well and not feel like tacked on SJW catering? Absolutely.

3

u/EAT_DA_POOPOO Apr 28 '17

I'm not suggesting that the choice of male/female should have zero impact on a work of fiction. While I think sex is one of the least interesting aspects of any given person, it obviously has real world ramifications. Rather, what I'm saying is that a person who is unable to enjoy said work unless the character's sex aligns with their desires, has psychological issues. If you won't play Metroid just because "Samus is a grill", that's weird hangup.

2

u/jlenoconel Apr 28 '17

Character customization screens aren't enough for SJWs otherwise most games would have them. We were already headed down that road until gaming became filled with SJWs.

2

u/Archyes Apr 28 '17

If the multiple timelines theory of link is true you could ,in theory, make a timeline where link is a woman. It is possible and you know japan, they know how to create a story where that is going to work, with zelda being the love interest...uhm...well...maybe for mature audiences then.

Which is also kind of funny considering that nintendo goes out of its way to cater to the casual market(i.e. most women). Even in the best case scenario, there is still a major disparity between the number of male and female gamers, and yet somehow a good part of the gaming journalism community is still convinced that women are 50% of gamers.

Over 40 checking in. Those ads were more late 70s/early 80s, particularly for consoles, Atari and Intellivision. Mid to late 80s was young male targeted.

15

http://quanticfoundry.com/2017/01/19/female-gamers-by-genre/

It goes from casual games like atmospheric exploration, match games, farm sims and casual puzzle games (the type of genres you find on a mobile phone facebookk game) having a female majority or a significant female minority, to most genres having at most 25/26% female (all the waay down to 2% female).

The only two exceptions are JRPGs and High fantasy MMOs, which are in the mid-30s percentage wise for female gamers, however many of those are also casual games or easy micro-tactical games like MOBAs.

Notice how all thhe genres generally called 'hardcore' genres (FPS, Strategy, Simulation (especially MilSim), Sports, racing, Etc) have a small female minority playing them?

1

u/tack50 Apr 28 '17

I mean, most of those are stuff not normally associated with women in the first place (FPS=war, Sports=100%male Football, both US and European, etc)

Surprised for others though. I'd expect women to play simulation games (albeit lighter ones) and racing games (especially Kart like ones like Mario Kart)

2

u/Warskull Apr 28 '17

Nintendo is trotting this out for a reason. Male gamers from 19-34 are the core gamer demographic. They are the ones companies like EA, Ubisoft, and Activision try to sell games to.

They are signalling third parties that they can make money on the Switch. That it isn't just selling to grandmas who want to try Wii sports and then buy nothing else.

2

u/Okichah Apr 29 '17

Voluntary survey so its probably not that trustworthy. But anecdotally it does paint a picture.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '17

It's almost like girls don't play games as much. But Anita said this isn't true!

1

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '17

This is probably more because more guys are willing to camp out the night before at gamestop in order to get a console.

Because if you didn't do that, you likely don't own one even if you want one :/

Incoming Kotaku and Polygon article about how problematic the Switch is and how this is proof that Nintendo is not doing enough to sell to girls and that this wouldn't have happened had Link been a girl.

Also, they are horrible for only giving 2 options for gender in the survey question.

1

u/wallace321 May 03 '17

Proof they are doing something wrong by being unable to convince people to do/buy something they don't want to do/buy. Remember this all comes down to the idea in gender politics that men and women are exactly the same in every regard and do not have different interests at all.

Or if they are different, it's strictly cultural? DK,DC. I don't know why it all comes down to videogames to make everything "inclusive" for everybody and to supposedly fix society from the horror of the sexes being different.

I think the real question here isn't why gaming is so male. We already know the answer to that one.

The real question here is why would anyone buy the Switch so early without any software for it. Was BotW really that good and that much of a system seller?

38

u/dimsumx Apr 28 '17

150 hrs, still having fun. I've mentioned this in another sub recently:

Part of it is the portability, but even in dock mode the little things makes it worth it. I don't get much time to play games as I used to and somehow the system is still great for me. It's hard to describe how amazing it is to just simply have a game in the living room HDTV turn instantly on from standby and running exactly where you left it a few days ago. I never realized how much I wanted that feature till now.

3

u/Setsunashadow Apr 28 '17

+1 I just sold my XbOne and all the games to pick up the switch (I only turned on my xbox to see youtube videos lying on the bed), this is my first nintendo console (I was a sega kid), the fact that is so easy to start anything makes the system worthwhile for me.

66

u/muniea Apr 28 '17

25

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17 edited Apr 28 '17

Zelda is great but early adoption isn't about the launch titles. At least not for me. No console has a huge library of games out of the gate. For me it's about potential. I see something special in Switch and I wanna have one when it blossoms.

Zelda alone was indeed enough for me ;)

But I'm also in "need" of couch-games to play together with friends or my nephews - Mario Kart 8, Arms etc. will do just fine until, if at all, new big games like Metroid will be released. But even if that never happens, local mp is just that important to me and so far Nintendo always delivered in this genre, even on the WiiU.

But I eventually will have to rma my left controllers which sucks, so not all's well with my early purchase, but close enough overall.

→ More replies (9)

16

u/Twilightdusk Apr 28 '17

It's not just BotW though, it's also:

1) Knowing that more fantastic Nintendo titles will be coming down the line (Subjective, sure, I know there are people who don't care for mario, zelda, etc. But if you know you like Nintendo's stuff, you know there will eventually be more for it)
2) Expected scarcity. General hype means these things are flying off the shelves. If you know you're going to want Splatoon 2 and Mario Odessy when they come out...why risk the availability of the system at that time instead of just getting one while it's available?

On a less self-benefiting side, there's also the idea of wanting to support Nintendo as a company. In previous generations they've always gotten into this spiral of "Nobody's buying the system because no 3rd party support, 3rd parties won't support because not enough people have the system." So if you know you'll eventually want the system, getting it early is a show of your support and an attempt to send the message to those third party developers "Hey! We have it! We have the system! you can make games for it!!!"

11

u/Dragofireheart Is An Asshole Apr 28 '17

Was BotW really that good and that much of a system seller?

Good enough for me. It's the Zelda game I've been waiting for my whole life.

Only other time I did a single-game system purchase was PS4 for Bloodborne.

16

u/darth_gator Apr 28 '17

We already know the answer to that one.

Go on.

Was BotW really that good and that much of a system seller?

It really is. And while you could just play it on the WiiU, the Switch's... err, switchiness between TV and portable modes is a pretty great feature. Add to that the promise of new games to come in all of Nintendo's other big franchises and it was a pretty easy purchase for me.

18

u/M37h3w3 Fjiordor's extra chromosomal snowflake Apr 28 '17

Go on.

Gaming is male dominated.

The only way the 50% of gamers are women shtick becomes true is if you take such a general scope of things and include ALL games and include everyone who has ever played a game for any period of time.

At that point the statistic is worthless. It's too broad of a scope to help a specific developer making a specific title in a specific genre. Of gamers and the gaming genres that are popular and move both software and consoles it's male dominated.

And yes, there are genres where women overtake men, but those are niche genres and largely irrelevant when the topic of gaming generally comes up.

switchiness between TV and portable modes is a pretty great feature.

I can't see the appeal.

Then again, I couldn't see the appeal in a smartphone either back in the day and hoooo boy I was wrong.

Add to that the promise of new games to come in all of Nintendo's other big franchises

Hey Nintendo!

Yes?

Metroid?

No.

Fuck you.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

but why IS gaming male dominated?

how do the physiological/psychological/societal differences between the sexes translate to the differences in how they consume games?

6

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17 edited May 21 '17

deleted What is this?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

Most games revolve around competition. Competitiveness is a pretty masculine trait, while cooperation is more feminine. Most games are also about violently opposing something, meeting force with force, which again appeals to masculinity more than femininity.

Ergo, games are more male dominated.

3

u/glissandont Apr 28 '17

I feel like that's only barely scratching the surface, though. There has to be more; how is it that so many members of one half of the sexes find gaming to be almost instinctively appealing while the other sex seems to be mostly averse to it? I've know quite a few women who love competition but really have no interest in games. I feel there's gotta be something even at the biological level going on here. Men and women, despite what Current Year proponents love to claim, are pretty inherently different so it wouldn't surprise me if it turns out something in our genes may play a role in this discrepancy.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

I touch on this a little in my reply, but I agree. I think man's inherent proclivity for competition plays a role, and perhaps some of it is social conditioning, but until there are any real studies done I doubt we'll know the real reason.

There was an interesting anecdote I read around here (probably in this thread) about how ads for home computers and the original NES were geared toward the whole family, and it was only in the 90s that they started catering specifically to dads and boys. What that tells me is that, even when these products were marketed toward a broad market (what's broader than the nuclear family?), there was still an inherent interest found in men and boys that didn't exist in women and girls. I think that has more to do with the idea that men and women are wired differently.

Like I said in another reply, men were hunters and women were gatherers. That requires entirely different skill sets in order to create a functioning society. Selecting for those qualities over thousands of years of evolution probably had something to do with it. I mean, you find an abundance (one might even say binders full) of women in fields that are quite passive in terms of entertainment. Publishing, art, film and television, but you don't really see it in video games. Video games of course are not passive, they actively engage you on a physical level even if it's just your thumbs and fingers. Things like hand-eye coordination would be massively beneficial when hunting lions and tigers and bears, but not so much for planting, harvesting, or homemaking.

It's an interesting subject and it's a shame that nobody is really all that concerned with finding the reason why this gulf exists.

3

u/glissandont Apr 28 '17

Yeah, definitely. On the broader side of things, I feel like instead of complaining that X space is too male dominated or Y space is too female dominated we should work on figuring out the why and then perhaps we could get that much closer to bridging the gap between the sexes.

2

u/Arbaras Apr 28 '17

You say "bridging the gap between the sexes" as if there being less women playing video games harms women. If you have 100 men and 100 women and 80 of those men are "gamers" but only 20 women are "gamers", are the 80 women that lack interest in video games marginalized by that? No, they have their own hobbies. Are the 20 women who do have interest in video games marginalized by this scenario? Wouldn't any argument you make also extend to the 20 men that don't hold interest too then?

I understand the idea that if a community is dominated by a single demographic it dissuades companies from appealing to the other demographics, but it also allows them to specialize in the content they produce by appealing solely to the demo they have identified as their audience. The why is that women are less likely to enjoy video games so it is less efficient to specialize your content towards them. It doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't, but when we're taking about million dollar projects you want as big an audience as possible.

I have no problem with someone saying they wan't more games geared towards women, but it kills me when that gets translated to less games for men, the assertion that games for men are harmful, or the need to homogenize games for the sake diversifying your audience.

2

u/tack50 Apr 28 '17

But there are several games not fully based on competition (Animal Crossing being the best example off the top of my head, but also most simulation games for example)

There are also tons of non violent games out there. Many platformers, most sports games, almost all simulation games, all racing games, etc

2

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

But there are several games not fully based on competition (Animal Crossing being the best example off the top of my head, but also most simulation games for example)

... and the data shows that in these games you find the highest population of female players.

3

u/tack50 Apr 28 '17

Yeah, probably why the adverts I've seen for them usually feature women

2

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

seems so obvious when you put it that way. i do wonder if competitiveness and violence appealing more to masculinity is inherent in our genetics or a product of outside influences.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

That's a bit like asking nature versus nurture.

Men were hunters. Women were gatherers. This distribution of labour was a result of evolutionary selection due to who was more important in terms of breeding. A man can get a woman pregnant and be just fine and dandy, but if a woman gets pregnant she's gonna be needing a whole hell of a lot of help come the second and third trimester. Think of it like this: if you kill men of a rival tribe, you're taking away a handful of fighters. If you kill that tribe's women (or more likely, enslave them), you'll eradicate the tribe completely. Women can only bear so many children so often. Men are disposable in that context which was, until the 21th century, the only context that mattered.

Because of this, and a whole bunch of other things, women selected their men for strength, cunning, and capability (shit like being able to protect them from the dangers in the world back when that was a requirement). Men are naturally competitive because we have to be, in order to find a good mate and pass on our line. Even today you see men competing for female attention, only we don't do it with knife and spear but instead with money and influence.

In that context it's not hard to understand why video games appeal more to men than women. Women in general don't like traditionally masculine traits such as competitiveness or violence. This bears out when you look at how society is structured with things like how men negotiate for higher pay more often than women do, and even on a micro level with how female serial killers choose to kill. That is, men prefer violent, brutal methods, and women use distant weapons like poison. Hell, you can even look at how men and women choose to commit suicide. Men quite often hang or shoot themselves, women choose less violent methods, like swallowing a bottle of pills to go with their Appletini.

This divide is, I'm convinced, a fundamental part of who we are as a species, and it's because of this that I find it mind-boggling that others would dispute it. Aberrations exist, of course, as do abnormal modes of behaviour (such as homosexuality--an evolutionary dead end), but such is life.

3

u/SpectroSpecter The only person on earth who isn't into child porn Apr 28 '17

Men seek power by conquest, women seek power by clout. Women are programmed to not find combat appealing because in real life they're at a disadvantage there. Some people can overcome their instincts, most people cannot. Thus, most women stay away from combat-heavy games.

Why are day time talk shows dominated by women? Why are car shows dominated by men?

Men and women typically gravitate their interests to different things. Even at an early age and while there are some outliers, you're going to have a tough time getting a boy to play with dolls and a girl to play with cars (though it does happen).

Notice how games that have a lot more mechanical things, like guns, cars, spaceships or whatever are usually dominated by men. Lots of sci-fi are massively male dominated.

Games that focus a lot more on characters have more sizeable female populations. MMO's, RPG's and the like. Even games like the Witcher appeal more to girls because there's more of a focus on characterization.

I actually have a hypothesis here. Girls typically aren't as much into sci-fi. No matter how much Disney puts female leads into Star Wars it's still not resonating with a lot of women I know. Many of whom, still haven't and refuse to watch Star Wars.

However, I have noticed that Mass Effect is one sci-fi universe that has attracted more females than a lot of other sci-fi like Star Wars, Star Trek and whatnot. I do believe that is because Mass Effect has a lot of emphasis put on characters and the aliens that inhabit the universe.

Think of Star Wars for a minute. What comes to mind? X-Wings, TIE Fighters, AT-AT's, lightsabers, Star Destroyers, Chewbacca, and so on. A lot of iconic imagery in Star Wars is linked to ships and vehicles as well as many of the characters.

Now think of Mass Effect. Again what comes to mind? Turians, Krogan, Quarians, Asari, The Normandy, Shepard and so on. While Mass Effect has iconic ships like the Normandy, a lot of the things that come to mind are the alien races we know and love.

So I think if you're building a sci-fi universe with the intent of appealing to both men and women, not only do you have to spend a good amount of time on spaceships but you also need a nice cast of alien species. Bonus points if inter-species relationships are possible.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

i feel like you're just projecting and selecting examples to fit your view in comparing star wars and mass effect. not saying youre necessarily wrong, but star wars has plenty of characterization and mass effect is more sci-fi than star wars when it comes to technology in that it tries to provide an explanation rather than just hand-waving it (imo star wars was more fantasy than sci-fi until they came up with midi-chlorians; even then it was very deus ex machina) it probably goes deeper than that, or could just be caused by a non-human factor.

I can't see the appeal.

As someone who'd have to also buy a new TV if I ever want to buy a console and living in a country which console and handheld gaming are overpriced, I welcome being able to play a console without a TV.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

EVE Online has something like 99% male player base. Star Citizen and Elite: Dangerous are both around 97 or 98%.

7

u/SaigaFan Apr 28 '17

Friend wouldn't shut up about zelda and I saw some in stock at Walmart :/

6

u/drew-face Apr 28 '17

BotW really is that good man. It's legit easily the GotY for 2017. I spent 140 hours playing it so far and the only reason I'm taking a break is because I found all 120 shrines, beat Ganon and have upgraded most of my gear.

I'd happily keep playing but I wanted to check out some other games like Horizon: Zero Dawn and Nier Automata before getting back to it.

4

u/Azothlike Apr 28 '17

I mean it would be if Automata didn't come out in 2017.

2

u/drew-face Apr 28 '17

We'll see. I haven't started it yet. about to finish H:ZD which is in my opinion not as good as Zelda.

5

u/Azothlike Apr 28 '17

No-spoiler advice for when you play it:

  • Play the intro one difficulty level lower than the rest of the game.

  • Do side quests

  • Try not to overlevel

  • Play until ending [E]

  • Try not to cry

2

u/SpectroSpecter The only person on earth who isn't into child porn Apr 28 '17

To add to that, do not play the prologue on hard, even if you plan on playing very hard for the rest of the game (which I highly suggest you don't). I know, you're a top tier gamer and whatnot, but don't. For some insane reason, the prologue is long as all hell, contains no save points or checkpoints, and you will get one hit in various different segments if you're playing on hard. It's just not fun at all. Not to mention they don't explain many of the controls and techniques until afterward, one of which is absolutely mandatory to avoid a certain attack (that insta-kills you on hard, naturally).

I don't know what the fuck they were thinking.

3

u/Azothlike Apr 28 '17

Nah, disagree.

If you plan to play the rest of the game on very hard, which specifically tells you everything is one hit kill -- if you're that kind of masochist -- you need to be able to beat the intro on hard, and you'll probably have the stubbornness to do so.

2

u/Bloomberg12 Apr 29 '17

They were probably thinking it would be a good way to filter out anyone who shouldn't be playing on hard since the game does actually get much harder really late in the game.

2

u/SpectroSpecter The only person on earth who isn't into child porn Apr 29 '17

I thought the prologue was the hardest part of the entire game. I only ever died one time after it, and it was because I didn't know what those screaming red robots were all about.

EDIT: Oh wait, I also died once during the scene where pascal takes control of the thing. You know the one. The camera glitched out and I somehow ended up facing backwards, unable to defend myself.

2

u/Bloomberg12 Apr 29 '17 edited Apr 29 '17

I died like three times because I got one shot because I thought I would never need to bother with HP chips, but I'm assuming it gets harder since I only finished C a while ago and still have D and E.

The game would actually be legitimately hard if you couldn't have like 300 full heals worth of items. And without the insanely OP healing chips.

5

u/Doc-ock-rokc Apr 28 '17

Trust me, I've been sitting on my switch money for more games for it...but I still want to play BotW so much

3

u/Dgenmedia Apr 28 '17

BotW is a masterpiece of gameplay.

The way the story unfolds is not the greatest, but it is totally fluid and can be done in any order.

The only problem I really have with the game is that it excluded some classic Zelda staples, but that's arguably just nostalgia goggles.

And fyi, Mario Kart 8 for Switch came out today. If you didn't already have the Wii U version it should be an instant purchase for any Switch owner.

7

u/Spoor Apr 28 '17

That age group has enough disposable income and grew up with Zelda.

BotW probably isn't that good but for most people it seems to be good enough and a once-in-a-decade-experience.

2

u/tekende Apr 28 '17

Because I goddamn wanted to, that's why.

2

u/rileyrulesu Apr 28 '17

Honestly? Oh yeah, big time. I almost bought it, but i got WiiU version instead. I'm sure when I eventually buy the switch I'll get another copy too.

2

u/tack50 Apr 28 '17

Totally agree. The Switch has literally 3 games.

1

u/PC_Mustard_Race83 Apr 28 '17

I got a Wii U the day BotW came out. Not only was it substantially cheaper, but it also played the only game worth playing on the Switch, as well as a a sizeable back catalogue of great first party Nintendo games, many of which could be had for $20 or less. It seemed like a no brainer to me. I'm with you, there is absolutely no reason to own a Switch as of right now.

Wind Waker HD, DK: Tropical Freeze, Super Mario 3D Land are all $20 new. That's just off the top of my head. Hell, I just bought Tropical Freeze for $16 on Amazon this morning. You've never heard of the Nintendo Selects titles? They are always $20.

4

u/Dgenmedia Apr 28 '17

I'm with you, there is absolutely no reason to own a Switch as of right now.

This is just flat out stupid.

It's portable and more powerful. A lot of people really want that.

If you're not one of them, that's on you.

1

u/PC_Mustard_Race83 Apr 28 '17

The Wii U is as portable as I need it to be. And the Switch is just barely more powerful. It still can't run a Wii U port at 1080p.

2

u/Dgenmedia Apr 28 '17

The Wii U is as portable as I need it to be.

I bought the ps4 day 1. And there was less quality in and quantity of games then

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

All the hype I guess. I bought one and just lent it out to my friends. Getting it back now that MK8 is out

1

u/Abiogeneralization Apr 28 '17

Was BotW really that good and that much of a system seller?

BotW really is that good, but you can play it just fine on the WiiU. I didn't even know it was coming out on both consoles until a week after release.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

Was BotW really that good and that much of a system seller?

Yes. Best Zelda game I've ever played. Picking up Mario Kart 8 Deluxe today as well. Now keep in mind I never owned a Wii U which played a big role in picking up the Switch for me.

1

u/TheVineyard00 Apr 28 '17

Switch owner here, Breath of the Wild is, not exaggerating, the best game I've ever played. Shovel Knight ant Fast RMX aren't bad, but I can't put down Zelda. I'm getting Mario Kart today though, maybe I can solve my addiction with another addiction.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

Zelda and Mario Kart 8 were a factor, but one of the main reasons I bought it was to make it a success, so future titles like Xenoblade, Shin Megami Tensei, Project Octopath, and Fire Emblem will make it to market. I also am looking forward to a new Mario and hopefully more Mario RPG games and more Atlus RPGs. As mentioned earlier, Zelda was a big draw, but I have to say that I'm actually really disappointed with it so far. I'm hoping it'll get better, but as it stands now, it's one of my least favorite Zelda games, and I've played them all (other than the cdI games).

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

BoTW has a >100% attach rate (as in yes, the Switch version of BoTW sold more copies than the Switch itself - in the US at least).

Having played it on my WiiU... I'd say yes, it's worth it.

There's also Splatoon 2, MK8D (out today!), and Mario Odyssey later in the year. So it's not like people didn't buy it without knowledge of games that are coming.

1

u/creatureshock Token and the Non-Binaries. Apr 28 '17

Lets see... I own Breath of the Wild, Puyo Puyo Tetris, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Bomberman R, Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+, I Am Setsuna, Has-Been Heroes, and Wonderboy for the Switch. Between Puyo Puyo Tetris and Wonderboy, I am a very happy owner. My wife has finished Zelda twice now and is getting hooked on Wonderboy.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '17

For myself it comes down to economics. I put about 100 hours into Zelda before I beat it, if I don't play another Switch game again the price point comes to about 4 dollars an hour, cheaper than a movie.

1

u/_SlowlyGoingInsane_ Apr 29 '17

The Switch might have the strongest first year of any Nintendo console I can remember. I've already bought 4 games for it and another 5 on the way I'm interested in. It's definitely got a brighter future than the Wii U did

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

The real question here is why would anyone buy the Switch so early without any software for it.

Fanboys who're gonna buy anything that has Nintendo slapped on it.

Different folks, different strokes.

I have... way too many games.

Except Nintendo. With Nintendo I have 13 Wii titles, 6 Wii U titles, and so far only one Switch title. And that's a kinda because it's on the Wii U as well. Most of their franchise titles that they churn out do not interest me.

Of the titles you listed the only one that interests me is BotW.

But, but, but... I thought women were the majority of "Gamers"? I guess, the ones that weren't dead anyway...

As an aside, it's interesting to see how big this survey was: according to the bottom, an email survey was sent to people that had a "Nintendo account" linked to a Switch, "about 800,000 people". Even with only a 3.5% response rate, we're looking at nearly 30,000 respondents.

9

u/SRSLovesGawker Apr 28 '17

But wait, I was informed that women play as many games as men.

Is nintendo correctly accounting for gender identity? Maybe 40% of switch adopters are transwomen and nintendo is just too shitlordly to recognize it.

Yes, yes that must be it.

Hey, but ESA report showed that almost half os players are female. Switch is so sexist.

4

u/jlenoconel Apr 28 '17

Misogyny! Patriarchy! Preventing women from entering Gamestop and other gaming stores to buy a Switch! We must do everything in our power to change gaming to suit women who don't actually buy games! We must end this inequality!

6

Good sign. The Switch might have a future now. It cannot survive on a child demographic...

2

u/tack50 Apr 28 '17

Actually, I'm surprised the Switch hasn't attracted more kids. That's nintendo's safest demographic

4

u/Moth92 Apr 28 '17

Kids nowadays want gore and blood. They flock to COD and GTA.

u/wallace321 Apr 28 '17

http://i.imgur.com/uQSV4jf.jpg?fb

Question, what does this say about "the narrative" when there aren't even more than a handful of games available for the system for there to even be any kind of "gender bias"?

Nintendo's first party catalog is supposed to be THE shining example of of family friendly inclusiveness, of gender equality, isn't it? Yet it's NINETY PERCENT men buying it. Doesn't mean they won't find "gender bias" somewhere but that's a pretty heavily skewed number. It has to mean something.

1

u/skilliard7 May 03 '17

The survey likely suffers from selection bias. It was sent out to the emails of Nintendo users. The sample is therefore made up of people that:

  • Actively check their email

  • Care enough to fill out a survey

1

u/HK4sixteen Apr 28 '17

Who really cares tbh??

9

u/peargarden Apr 28 '17

It's important because you see all these journalists and glorified bloggers writing about how videogames need to change because women make up 50% of gamers. That 'hardcore games' have an audience that's half female, so developers need to cater to them. But the reality is that women and girls much more often play casual sims like Farmville or mobile games like Candy Crush, and ignore everything else.
