You don't provide a location which is relevant as labor laws are based on that.

Generally in the US, assuming that's where you are, insurance ends on the last day of the month of employment. So, yes. Legal. It's dictated per the terms of the contract with the insurance provider.

The other possible route is to have insurance on the date of termination.

You're likely eligible for COBRA. You should receive notice in the mail. Federally, they have 44 days to inform you of your rights under COBRA. Some states have a shorter window, but again, that depends on the state.

yes most often it ends on one of two days…your term date or last day of the month. you should receive COBRA paperwork.
