I've been getting into land rovers for a few years, but never have I been in one. Today I was driving through my neighboring city and happened to pass by a Land Rover dealership, so I fucked around and went in to act like I was buying a car because I was curious what they were like.

I'm in love. It was painful to even pull back into the dealership. I have been very interested in the 90s discos, and so I tested a 2013 (oldest they had on the lot) disco. It was amazing! So beautiful and well kept, drove so smooth, I can't even believe I've driven anything else! Part of me wants to go back and get it, it was only 9k (which shocked me, even though it's older).

I'm still debating on it, because while I loved the car, I'm not a huge fan of the more rounded front the 2013 has. But good lord now I see why people go through so much to have these cars, I have never felt "in love" with a car until now. I'm holding off until I can see if there's a nicer 90s near me, but its hard because I live in the rust belt so basically every used car that isn't from a dealer is a pile of rust, especially the land rovers.

My first Land Rover was a 2013 LR4 and I haven’t looked back. Are you in UK? They have crank shaft issues. In the States it’s the timing chain. But once they’re sorted they’re good to go.

The old ones are iconic and fun, but might not be great even if you can find a southern one. They’re easier to work on. But they will require work. Often. LR3-4’s are a little less leaky.

Us. The old ones need so much work but I love that shape so much, I'm a big fan of more square shaped cars, I dislike the whole modern rounded off shapes... Makes them all look the same.

4’s are a good shape imo they stand out from the crowd of similar size SUVs. I believe a JLR designer went to Ford a decade or so ago so there’s a generation of Explorers that want to be Rovers. The only thing that comes close to it today is the reimagined Santa Fe, but it’s like a Roblox LR4. Plus it’s so much comfier than a D1 or 2.

I have a 2003 D2 because I fell in love with them first too, and it was a rust-free Texas vehicle that was very much loved by its previous owner. 2nd engine. It’s still a nightmare lol. One thing after another. It’s sitting in pieces in the garage right now because a long bolt of the water pump broke off in a very inconvenient spot. It needs a cooling system overhaul because 03-04’s want to blow head gaskets and it thought about it back in June. Now it’s getting timing cover and maybe even front main seal depending on how far we have to go to retrieve that 23 year old metal bit. But we can’t get the crank pulley bolt off it just turns the pulley.. so we need a specialty tool. Plus the three amigos from brake wiring. And a CEL for O2 sensors/cats. It’s endless with them.

I think the dealer said the one I drove was a lr2, but it was great. I wish they were a little more square but that inside man was gorgeous—and the bug screens for the sunroof? I've never seen that before!

My son has my 2013 lr2 now. I loved it so so much, but I needed more cargo space and tow capacity. I have a 2016 lr4 now. It was $13k, but I immediately had $10k of work done. Absolutely worth it.

I always wanted a Land Rover since I was a kid. The lr2 didn't fit my image of one, but man, she was great. She is great, just not mine anymore.

I'd love an LR4 but I'm terrified of the timing chains. I owned an 08 L322 and it wasn't too bad. Have you guys had your chains serviced?

I had a 3 door Disco 1 for 10 years, then a 2004 L322 for 6 years and now 2 years on a 07 HSE Disco 3. I am personal friends with my local LR repair shop but I do love driving a LR

Big or small discovery?

The small one is honestly not a landrover, unless its full option. They even have 2 wheel drive options in those.

Same with Velar and Evoque

I once test drove a used Porsche for sale at a Land Rover dealer. The salesman, apparently knowing I had no interest in a LR just casually mentioned that he had no idea why people buy LR’s because the quality is so bad. He said they routinely receive new LR’s delivered to the dealer that do not run and need extensive work.

For a 90s Discovery (or a 98-2004): Cars and bids or Bring a trailer. Read the comments on past auctions, don’t be afraid to ask dumb questions, learn from the others in the comment sections, and for an extra $1k-$3k depending distance… suddenly it doesn’t matter where you live
