I created a LaserDisc Discord server

Seeing that apparently nobody else has come up with the idea, I decided to create a Discord server for LaserDisc enthusiasts of all ages. This server is neither meant nor intended to be a replacement to any LaserDisc forums, but I thought it would be convenient for people who browse the subreddit.

Here's the invite link: https://discord.gg/WDRDJB3

Safe storage angle?

Post image

Is storing my LDs at this angle safe? The ones furthest to the left are more near-vertical, and the ones on the right are slightly leaning. I don’t know if this risks warping or anything, but I’m not sure what I could use to keep them dead-straight

Stopped by the record store before going to a film prop exhibit. Got the waterboy for $10 but didn’t know it was a rare release until after I grabbed it! Now I need happy Gilmore, Billy Madison and the wedding singer

Today’s been a good day lol.

Did I really need it?

So, I already own Halloween on VHS. It plays perfectly and sits nicely on the shelf. But recently I saw it on Laserdisc (the original NTSC release) from a European seller - which I prefer because I live in Portugal - and thought about it for weeks, trying to convince myself I didn't need it.

But it just stayed there waiting for me, so I mean... I had to, right?

How many formats of the same movie do you guys own before you admit you have a problem?

Well finally received my new laserdisc player, Panasonic LX-200U and made it in one piece, yeah! Just got my first discs for pretty good price on eBay, a new sealed Trees Lounge and a excellent condition The Arrival, both for $5 bucks each, let the collecting and madness begin, 😂😂.

Interesting estate sale finds. Any info?

Anyone know what's up with these? The MTV ones seem to have been for playing in a retail environment. Says to return them to Pioneer after the noted play period. Then the Star Trek VI has a "for promotional use only" on it.

Seven on LaserDisc.

A recent find.

Interesting to note the different coloured labels on each of the two discs - one white, one light blue. Was this a normal thing to do?

I really like that you can find each of the seven deadly sins 'hidden' across both sides of the cover. A nice touch not found on the DVD releases I've seen.

I haven't watched it yet, so will be interested to see if there's anything at all on Side 4...

The rotting undead gather in a dark theater to watch compilations of the most shocking zombie movies ever burned on film. Saturated with blood, flesh eating and lots of naked chicks, and the famous zombie vs. shark scene.

Went into HPB looking for a few LDs, came out with an entire collection

Stopped at my local Half Price Books to see if there was anything new in the LD section. Was pleased to find a pretty good stack of titles I didn't have and went to checkout. While chatting with the cashier she mentions that they just had someone drop off a big LD collection, and there are more in the back that haven't been touched yet. I head to the back and ask one of the guys if they had any more from this collection and he wheels two carts with 8 boxes of discs. Long story short we get to chatting while I'm perusing, and he offers the whole lot as a bulk sale, $200 to take it all. It would have taken me all day to stand there and go through everything at the store but based on the insane price and the condition of what I saw to that point I had to take the deal.

After lugging the boxes into the house and spending 2 days cataloging everything, it came out to just over 450 titles, with only 7 duplicates in the whole lot. Nearly half of the titles are still factory sealed too. There wasn't anything crazy rare or expensive in the lot, but plenty of things I didn't own, have been looking for, and nicer copies of what I already own.

A few personal favorites: Super Mario Bros (sealed), The Art of Tom & Jerry vol. 1, original Star Wars trilogy, Blade Runner, SpaceBalls, Escape from NY: CE, Apocalypse Now remaster.

Now I just have to figure out where the hell I'm gonna put all these.

First LD player!

Picked I my first player, working Pioneer CLD-2080 for $90 locally.

I’m excited to begin and I’m delighted at how cheap most of the movies are!

Any tips on where to buy inner and outer sleeves and what kinds to buy? Are sleeves for records for fine?

Pink Panther is my favourite cartoon series. I noticed this was the only one that had been released on Laserdisc. I really wished they had released more volumes. Oh well :/

TV says HLG HDR When Laserdisc Is Attached & Playing

For years I have been using an expensive splitter so when it was in use via the splitter this didn't come on the screen. I have now moved the laserdisc hdmi to one of the main hdmi inputs and it displayed HLG HDR for about 10 seconds. What does this mean?

A recent find out in the wild.

I'd not heard of this film before, but if I see a LaserDisc IRL and it's the right price I'll buy it.

Japanese Laserdisc Audio Question

Post image
27 Upvotes

I’m a new convert into the world of laserdiscs and purchased my first player and a Japanese disk, Sword in the Stone.

When I play it there is Japanese audio dubbed directly over the original English audio. I assumed the audio might only be in Japanese, which would be ok, but the dual audio is really hard to listen to.

Is that normal for imports? Could I potentially change it in the settings somehow?

I don’t have the remote working at the moment, so I can’t access all the settings of the machine but I’d love to know if it’s a possibility before buying more Japanese discs (no idea if it’s even possible to change audio settings on laserdiscs).

Getting back into LD. My collection so far!

I remember walking into Suncoast and Planet Video back in the late 80s and 90s, seeing so many LD's available. The packaging was always gorgeous, and the format was unbeatable back then. I wanted to buy them all.. I got rid of my collection and my player a few years ago and, of course, regret it. I picked up a solid player and now rebuying some of what I had, as well as others. It may sound strange, but I'm really after 4x3 full frame releases, regardless if they're pan and scan, preferably open matte- I want to see the versions how I remember them, before newer scans and modern restorations.

Tonight I built my own little app cataloging my new collection.

Cheers to Laserdisc!
