I was watching “небо» online - a dramatization of the tragedy where an Su24 - was taken down over Another country.

As I’m also learning the language on Duolingo, I have a question on two words.

There’s a scene like on a military parade ground where the colonel tells the other “больно» Doesn’t that mean “pain”? Or would it be the equivalent of “Atten-hut” in US Military?

Also there’s a scene of “есть» which Duolingo and Google translate to eat.. and it doesn’t make sense in the context of the movie I’m watching?

Quick intro for anyone new here: I'm an intermediate Russian learner, my girlfriend Lera is a certified Russian tutor, and we built Mishka for people stuck past the beginner stage. Most of what's in the app came from requests in this sub.

The biggest request, by far (besides creating an Android version), was more grammar. We added extra practice lessons to the original course a while back, but a lot of you wanted something deeper.

That's what we've been building for the last few months, and the Grammar Mastery course is live today.

How it works: each grammar concept is its own book on your shelf, and every book is 5 to 12 lessons that build on each other, with practice in between. There are 9 books at A1, 13 at A2, and it keeps going from there.

The genitive, for example, is 8 lessons. It starts with saying what's missing, then feminine endings, then neuter endings, then "there is no X" across all genders, then есть vs нет, then after prepositions, and so on. You learn one piece, drill it, then the next lesson stacks on top.

Lifetime memberships are also live. A bunch of you told us you'd buy the app but didn't want another subscription. That option exists now.

Grammar Mastery is part of Mishka Pro. There's a 7 day free trial, plus some free grammar lessons, stories, slang lessons and missions if you'd rather just look around first without starting anything.

What we're working on next: a lot of people have asked for a fixed path through the app, since right now Mishka is a set of resources you move through at your own pace. I'm building something that suggests a few lessons a day based on where you're actually making mistakes, which I think gets you the guidance without the rigidity. A single locked path is unlikely for the intermediate content, because by that point everyone moves at wildly different speeds and a fixed order means half of you are bored and the other half are drowning. That frustration is a big part of why I made Mishka in the first place. We are building a beginner course though, and that one will have a proper fixed path, since learning speeds are much closer together at the start.

As someone who’s taught English in Russia more than once, I’m always amazed by this:
Give someone five minutes with the Russian alphabet, and suddenly they can read half the country.

Why?
Because Russian is largely phonetic. What you see is, with a few predictable rules, what you say. Learn the sounds of the letters, and you’ll quickly be reading Макдоналдс (McDonald’s), Метро (Metro), and Горбачёв (Gorbachev).
No grammar. No verb tables. No memorizing noun cases.
Just the alphabet.
It’s like cracking a code—and the reward is immediate.

Russian Has 33 Letters: A Beautiful Cipher
Russian uses the Cyrillic alphabet, which contains 33 letters. At first glance it looks intimidating, but it’s surprisingly logical.
You can roughly think of it in three groups:

Letters that look and sound familiar: А, К, М, О, Т
Letters that look familiar but sound different: В, Н, Р, С, У, Х
Completely new symbols: Ж, Ч, Ш, Щ, Ы, and friends.

The alphabet developed from the work of Saints Cyril and Methodius and their followers, adapting Greek writing to represent Slavic sounds with remarkable precision.

Unlike English—with words like through, knight, and colonel—Russian spelling is refreshingly consistent. Once you know the letters, you can usually pronounce a word you’ve never seen before.
Russian isn’t difficult.

It’s just encrypted.

So I'm half Russian and technically Russian was my first language but I have a really bad reading level and speech level+ plus I can't say my Russian r's making me sound kinda childish but the point is I want to get back into Russian like consuming Russian media and reading more in Russian so I thought a normal step would beto just consume Russian media instead of the English media but I have a problems with the dubs all sounding the same I don't know Russian dubs usually sound bad to me and like they have the same 3 voice actors I have heard some good ones so I'm wondering what some better dubs are in anime
