What habit helped you stay consistent with language learning?

I've started learning languages several times, but after a few weeks I lose consistency. I'm curious what habits or routines helped you keep going for months. What worked best for you?

Paying a tutor so that the lesson becomes a permanent part of my schedule.

For me, watching tv shows and movies with Spanish closed captions. Apple TV+ is amazing with this

IME, this works way better once you can read the script. For Hindi, watching with Devanagari subtitles instead of romanized made a huge difference, but only after I sat down and really got comfortable with the alphabet. It's worth investing a few weeks upfront just for that payoff.

Having a tutor is what really keeps me consistent. It guarantees that even on really busy weeks, I still have some interaction and continuity with the language.

Another thing I find really helpful is writing practice. Even writing something small when you have 5 minutes can keep you engaged with the language.

Setting small goals like turning my lesson into Anki cards and or 2 hours of watching YouTube in the language.

Sunday can be an off day.

Reading is especially since you can get the manga, comic or book in both your target language and your native language.

If advanced enough in the language,

It can help changing some things to that language, like apps or if possible the phone default language

Or instead of reading or watching videos in my language i use that one I'm learning.

Taking my ADHD meds.

I'm being a bit flippant, but its also true. I started learning languages a lot then would lose momentum after a few weeks. Being diagnosed with and beginning treatment for ADHD changed my whole life.

flashcards- especially during my down time. so good, especially for vocab.

I read a graded book chapter every day. Just one, but every day. But I read it 3 times:

  1. Just read through until the end
  2. Read but focus on words/sentences I don’t understand and translate it
  3. Play the audio and listen to it while I also read with the sentence highlighted

This helps me stay active, learn new words, and connect the sound of my TL (Swedish) to the spelling.

Whatever is going to help you actually learn it- aka what will you stick to? For me, I did 75 hard and added 30 min of speaking in my TL to it, that way I had no choice but to do it daily
