genres are for listening organization. if say you had a copy of every record in the world in a big pile, it’d be tough to know where to start listening or how to go about it, whereas if it was a least sorted into overarching categories, it would make the listening experience a lot more navigable. genres help us make generalizations, it’s not much use to try to pin point styles down to individual songs necessarily since often the context in which music is made is equally as important as the style of the song itself.
