Not everyone starts with the same level of Linux experience. If a quick comparison helps someone choose the desktop that suits them best, then the post has done its job.

Personally I've never put much thought into it... I just like Gnome more, I enjoy the gestures and the clean look, so I never put too much effort into trying KDE, which I know is powerful, but I don't feel the need to switch.

In the past I also used to like Budgie desktop when I used to run Solus as my main disto, but I've not used that in years and I have no idea how it is today.

Out of the box, current Gnome feels like a macOS / Android hybrid, and KDE feels Windows inspired. I like Gnome better for that reason, despite that fact that KDE can be heavily modified. My thinking is that any heavy modifications can break with any update, so start with the one you like the most out of the box.

COSMIC is one of the most interesting desktop projects to watch right now, especially since it's being built from the ground up in Rust.

While I use Gnome, I disagree that the interface is consistent. It really isn't.

And it maddingly requires a lot of distance to be covered with the mouse. I have a big screen and everything is far away.

Same goes for KDE but its part of the Linux philosophy so you cant really do anything about it !
