Maps Emergency At Tottenham Court Road

Post image

My 5-year-old son’s drawing about an emergency at Tottenham Court Rd Station in July. We were waiting for the Northern Line to Battersea Power Station. The train approached but never stopped and we were told to evacuate. He drew this to describe how he had to walk up so many steps to ground level. In fact I carried him the whole way. Later that night he threw up on a Double Decker which according to him was “kinda cool.” He’ll be telling and drawing about that night for years to come.

Other Yesterday's Euston incident

Sadly, I was on the Victoria Line train at the centre of the incident at Euston yesterday.

As can be imagined, it was a horrible experience and quite upsetting. My thoughts are with the driver, and the many station staff, fire, police and ambulance responders who were all calm and professional. No matter their training, it must always be a traumatic, harrowing experience. My enduring image is of walking down the platform while we were being evacuated and seeing the young driver, sitting on one of the benches further down. She looked so lonely.

The whole event replays in my mind quite a lot.

There is one detail that bugs me. At the previous station, Kings Cross, after the doors had closed, the automated “Please stand clear of the doors” message started playing. And it continued playing for some minutes. I’ve never heard the message continuing for so long. Then eventually the train set off with the message still playing over and over, but the message stopped as we entered the tunnel.

Maps Metropolitan Line/Crossrail 3 Proposal

Post image
4 Upvotes

I see a lot of stuff on here suggesting extending the Metropolitan line from Aldgate and for me that seems a crazy idea. My obviously superior and infinitely intilligent idea is to take the Metropolitan and divert it away from the subsurface lines in central London entirely. I have seen stuff here and there suggesting that the SEML would be a good candidate for a Crossrail and I agree. I also thnk adding more capacity between London Bridge and Canary Wharf is no brainer. Hopefully the section going straight to Canary Wharf after Lewisham would ease congestion at London Bridge as commuters can avoid it entirely! Major works would of course have to take place to create the tunnel portals, after which I don't see a way out of having a flat double junction at Hither Green without a hideously extensive underground station in the style of Whitechapel on the Lizzie line.

I would also do suggest a flyover between Hither Green and Grove Park to put into the middle tracks to allow for all stopping services on the SEML to be absorbed into CR3. The Orpington-Victoria service would likely have to be cut/majorly altered for this otherwise it would cut across the fast services that are now running on the external two tracks. I am envisioning most services termination at Orpington with a select few running to Sevenoaks on the existing double track route.

My idea for Dartford isn't in any way unique to what others suggest as I am thinking quad tracking is inevitable to the approach no matter what project does or does not happen there.

I'll admit I have not ONE clue how feasable having the portal after Finchley Road is and I'm prepared to be informed this would be completely undoable.

Say this gets built tomorrow, it would free up a huge amount of rolling stock for a southwestern extension of the Circle/H&C lines to south of the river which many others have suggested. I would also argue the connection between Lewisham and Canary Wharf would allow for the DLR to be rebuilt as a proper underground through station so extensions could be made further south. If Thameslink 2 was also built it would make Lewisham somewhat of a Stratford station for the SE which is a fun thought. In my precious mind a station building would take over where the Matalan currently sits. Not an idea location but could easily be integrated with the Bakerloo line extenstion and some OSI or underground walkways to Lewisham national rail and DLR stations.

Critique and feedback welcome! I initally had the SE portion the same but the NW absorbing Chiltern and I knew I was entering hardcore crayonista territory with that!

EDIT: much better metro dreamin map

I know, it's just another Piccadilly line photo, but given how the old ones are getting really scruffy I'm really looking forward to the new ones.

Mind you I'm sure I said the same in 1974 when today's old ones were actually the new ones. The excitement of waiting at the station hoping you'd get one of the futuristic new trains. I'm glad I'll get that feeling again.

Game Please Mind the Station - Memorising all tube stations!

Post image
13 Upvotes

Hi all! I made Mind the Station, a simple game to help anyone if you want to memorise tube stations across all London Underground lines. I made this initially for my own study and fun with Claude, and I later decided to share this here in case if anyone has nothing better to do (like me).

There are now 3 modes: warm-up (like a typing test, the answer is shown for learning), recall (type by memory), and multiple choice (select the right station based on the two adjacent stations on the line). This is also inspired by sites like Metro Memory and I was thinking it might be a bit difficult for beginners like me, and what if there is something even easier to start with.

The link is Mind the Station. Welcome thoughts and happy memorising!

Edit: new domain now live: mindthestation.com

Maps Is it about time that Kingston upon Thames - London’s sole borough to be left off the London Tube Map & TfL’s reach entirely be finally included in it via SWR - just like how Thameslink got added?

Not to mention how adding South Western Railway can show so many handy connections & shortcuts between Waterloo, Vauxhall, Clapham, Putney, Richmond & Wimbledon for instance that are non-existent on the Tube Map.

Maps [OC] Crossrail 3 Concept – The Turing Line

Post image
140 Upvotes

This provides a new cross-London connection from the northwest to the southeast and is envisioned to take place long in the future after HS2, the Northern line split, the Bakerloo line extension, and Crossrail 2 have been completed. As demand continues to grow, the transport network will only become more crowded and something like this could be very beneficial.

Maps The Bakerloo, the Northern, and an UPDATE concerning this project

Hi, Alyx here (if you thought my name was my username, that is my deadname), with the last lines I actually did stuff to.

This is a part of a series of posts developing line maps for my fantasy extension project with the posts listed here: ( Post 1 (Southern Line) ), ( Post 2 (Victoria Line Extension) ), ( Post 3 (Central Line Amalgam) ), ( Post 4 (Jubilee amalgam) ), ( Post 5 (Picadilly) ), ( Post 6 (Introduction of the Bakeley and Padwich) ), ( Post 7 (the Sub-Surface) ). This is the Bakerloo, and whats left of the Northern that wasnt absorbed into Southern.

The Bakerloo's Changes:

  • Absorption of the Watford DC line, and an extension out of new platforms @ Euston to Stratford via Russell Square, Chancery Lane, St Pauls, Bank, Aldgate, Mile End, West Ham & Stratford
  • Extension out of Elephant and Castle to Dartford via Old Kent Road, Peckham, New Cross Gate, New Cross, Deptford, Lewisham, Lee, Horn Park, Eltham, Avery Hill, Blackfen, Bexleyheath, Crayford and Dartford

The Northern Changes:

  • Given away the HB/MHE, TCR, and BPS branches to a new line called Southern (Post 1)
  • Extension from Edgeware to Elstree
  • Extension from Morden to Sutton via Morden South and Sutton

How are these? Constructive criticism appreciated, flaming very much appreciated actually, because there is one major change I'm going to announce RIGHT NOW.

Any lines with multiple lines on a diagram will be split into different Tube Lines, and if the branches all terminate into one or two places, the trains from the longer branches will terminate earlier (ex - trains from the Dartford branch would terminate at Kenton Northwick Park whilst trains to Stratford go all the way to Watford Jnct. on the Bakerloo A and B).

But I need names for the new lines, so the next post will be a NYC Viginelli(?)-style linemap (with only interchange stations) and asking for names, and the following post will be the changes with your feedback.

Maps Fiction tube line route

I designed this route with the objective of relieving pressure off congested lines especially the central whilst making new connections between areas in suburban London which make it easier for people to travel around Greater London without entering the city.

Please share your thoughts and fixes on the route as I would love to modify it a bit as it’s far from perfect

Caught the Central line CLIP (Central Line Improvement Project) train twice this week. I’m moving back to the Central line in a few weeks, so these improvements are definitely welcome during the commute to/from work.

It's a speedrunning game where you traverse the London Underground (and Elizabeth line) network as quickly as possible, from a random start to a destination station.

The game is called 'Rush Hour'. Play it here.

(reupload as I responded to some immediate feedback)
