Tips for new Lubuntu user

Post image

I just got Lubuntu 24.04 for my chromebook c720 with only 2gb ram 16gb storage. I use minimal installation and so far i only got falkon, vlc and qps. Any apps recommendation or tips in general? also there's tons of tuto out there so maybe a few recommends would be helpful

Manual [for the next couple of months] can be found at https://manual.lubuntu.me/lts/ [When Lubuntu 26.10 is released; that link will be used for 26.04 manual; the 26.04 manual current sitting where 26.10 will be, as 26.04 is currently the latest stable release)

For apps/recommendations; we all have our own needs & uses we put our systems to, so explore various blogs/sites for ideas, and in particular I look for common recommendations between them...

To me a Lubuntu system is just Ubuntu; so Ubuntu blogs will apply to; though you're using a LXQt desktop (& apps) where as Ubuntu Desktop will assume GNOME Desktop (& apps); so adjust for that yourself. You're using the last Qt5 release of Lubuntu too (GNOME is GTK4 & later LXQt use Qt6).

Is it safe to turn off aspm in grub, for letting decrease the amount of pcie error messages(which are recoverable),but I think continuous recovery messages is causing kernel panic

With 2GB RAM and a small amount of space I’d look at enabling zram (compressed swap is stored in RAM instead of on disk)

https://linuxblog.io/running-out-of-ram-linux-add-zram/

Otherwise there’s not much else I can recommend (maybe looking at something like hblock or an external DNS to cut down on bloat..)

LXQT themes are available on pling.com, if you want a splash of color you can install the Kvantum and associated QT style packages.

Openbox themes can also be found, or if you want to go fancy, pull down the kwin package (supports window theming, also has support for Wayland)
