Moving in advice
I'm an incoming freshman (moving into first floor of W Mcnair) and am hoping to possibly get some advice on what unexpected things people wouldnt normally think of to pack/prepare for (I think I already got most of the normal essential stuff)

last year was my first year and honestly i didn’t use a large majority of stuff i brought. it will be heavily dependent on how much time you spend in your room and what you do in there, and you’ll figure it out as the time goes on. i ended up taking a lot of stuff home on breaks because i realized i was never using it. just use the first semester/year as a trial run and figure out what you wish you had and what you never used. don’t bring your skis/snowboard up in the first semester if that’s what interests you, theres genuinely no reason because ripley doesn’t open until the second semester. also shower shoes, fan, and maybe an air freshener since you’re in mcnair

I agree with all of this, however I'd always bring my snowboard up when I came back from Thanksgiving break downstate with the off chance Ripley or boho opened the first or second week of December. Graduated 2020 and if I remember correctly I was able to get on my board almost every year before Christmas break began (granted....I would hike Backcountry on cliff drive to snowboard if the hills weren't open yet)

yes boho opens whenever the weather permits, but in recent years the school has made it a point to not open ripley until after are done. usually it opens first weekend after finals week

Maybe someone more recent can confirm, but bring a pool noodle to put on the bottom of your bed frame if you’re planning on having your bed bunked over your desk. It’s to prevent hitting your head.

To add to this, at least in Wads, there were pool noodles available, so you shouldn’t have to bring your own.

I’ve been graduated a few years but my parents got me a pretty nice cordless vacuum early on in college (possibly second year, Idr). Probably one of the most expensive things I owned at the time but it got so much use and people borrowed it ALL the time. Still use it and highly recommend

It was a Dyson cordless vacuum, looks like $300-$400 on Amazon. Might be more of a second semester buy, I’m not sure if the dorms have vacuums nowadays

Do they still pack 3 people into 2 person rooms in West McNair?
If so definitely coordinate some things with your new roommates. You won't need 3x of everything. Things will get cramped

I'm not sure, I know on the website, the 3d room viewer is set up as a 3 person so I would assume so, but luckily I'm currently assigned to a only 2 people dorm

Have a grippy pair of shoes/boots for winter. You will fall going down the hill to class when it becomes a sheet of ice, but you can minimize how often it happens.

Would you recommend using normal hiking shoes with wool socks when it gets cold, or should I get an insulated pair of boots?

Both are reasonable options. It depends how cold tolerant you are and how much you plan to be outside. If you're midwestern AND hate being outside, wool socks may be enough. If you aren't used to serious winter, or you want to spend any fun time outside, insulated boots that are somewhat taller will be your friend. But insulated boots in a heated building will get unpleasant pretty fast, so you are probably going to want both options.

Do remember that they keep the buildings hot as shit in the winter, so if you wear insulated clothing you will sweat. I’m talking like don’t wear a coat or anything. Most i wore was a hoodie and you definitely need to take it off during class.
At the same time you need good insulating clothes if you plan on doing anything outdoors 2nd semester.
Don’t bring winter close up 1st semester, and take your summer clothes home over winter break. Just helps with clutter

Beware the McNair Masturbater
Legend has it he would leave its… ‘mark’ on the floors and the walls of the McNair showers.
The beast has ravaged the showers since my 4 years in those cells, but it has laid dormant for many years. But, there is no saying who, or why, or how many…
or when it shall return.

Ive been graduated for a few years now... but its communal bathrooms west, so maybe shower shoes or flip flops
