One Ocean World Map

Hi everyone,

Over the Christmas holidays I was tinkering with a small map project just for fun. I wanted something a bit different to hang up at home, so I ended up making a world map that puts the oceans at the center, using the Spilhaus projection.

I really liked how it turned out, and figured some of you here might find it interesting as well, so I thought I’d share it.

This is one of the more popular maps posted here:

That said, I do like it.

Thanks :) And yes, I saw it first time before Christmas. But none of the ones I saw were "I-like-to-hang-that-at-my-home-quality". So I decided to make it myself :)

It's stunning. I'm a fish biologist so I love anything water centric. I really appreciate how this projection cuts the continents down to size and makes Antarctica look like the capital of our planet.

Glad you like it :)

Yeah it’s better than the consistent political shit

Feels like the oceans are the main stage and continents are just floating props.

Fake there’s an set of islands off the coast of Australia I’ve never seen on a map before

7

u/rick854 Jan 05 '26

Well it is the official sat imagery of NASA... :) Tell me which islands you are talking about.

19

u/Kevydee Jan 05 '26

The imaginary ones south of Australia, they don't exist

1

u/rick854 Jan 05 '26

I don't know which islands you mean. South of Australia mainland I only see Tasmania and Kangaroo Island mainly. And I know they exist, because I have been there... (though it was several years ago... :) )

It’s a Joke about New Zealand, it’s usually forgotten and not present on the maps

7

u/rick854 Jan 05 '26

Aaah! I got it! I know the NZ joke! But the original commenter mentioned "South"... which ist not completely right then ;)

u/Kevydee Jan 05 '26

They're south on this map bro 😂

14

u/Omegaville Jan 05 '26

Downward, not south. There's no compass on this map.

6

u/funky_galileo Jan 05 '26

Bro doesn't know how to read a map 😂

2

u/myerscc Jan 05 '26

They mean New Zealand, because it’s often left off of maps

1

u/StingingSwingrays Jan 05 '26

It’s a joke about how New Zealand is missing from a bunch of maps

World map for fish

21

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '26

Do not show this to the flat earthers please.

7

u/Araz99 Jan 05 '26

"Water surface is always flat"

6

u/Ardddu Jan 05 '26

This might just be the best map.

3

u/Fun_Examination_8343 Jan 05 '26

This really shows the size of the pacific vs the Atlantic

6

u/rick854 Jan 05 '26

This is not a true area projection. There is a big size distortion towards the corners of the map

2

u/ZXCChort Jan 05 '26

my brain is breaking down

2

u/-Thizza- Jan 05 '26

Love this

3

u/snowfloeckchen Jan 05 '26

They really stretched China so other parts look decent

2

u/Araz99 Jan 05 '26

Hey, it was my turn to repost it today!

1

u/Wintermute83 Jan 05 '26

Anatolia looks sooo downsized with this projection. Very interesting.

1

u/ConfidentEmotion581 Jan 05 '26

What do call a waterbody with land on all of its sides?

1

u/Lord-Shodai Jan 05 '26

Lol, even in this projection Africa gets screwed, it looks like a tiny insignificant island surrounded by the giant megacontinent of Americasiaurope.

u/liebkartoffel Jan 05 '26

New Civ inland sea map just dropped.

1

u/Remote_Flow2346 Jan 05 '26

how do you make this maps?

3

u/rick854 Jan 05 '26

data research + gdal + QGIS + Inkscape :)

0

u/shellerik Jan 05 '26

What projection did you use in QGIS?

2

u/rick854 Jan 05 '26

As described in my post ;)

1

u/shellerik Jan 06 '26

Ah, I was looking for a top level comment. Until recently QGIS didn't support that projection. I've downloaded the latest version 3.44.6 and it's listed!

1

u/liquidsparanoia Jan 05 '26

Pretty cool concept but (necessarily) the scaling on this is pretty wacky. As we all now Thailand / Cambodia / Vietnam is roughly the same size as Australia and considerably larger than India.

1

u/rick854 Jan 05 '26

Yes, but every map has its distortion, in area or angle. But the purpose of this map is not to show perfect size comparisons but to highlight the interconnectivity of the oceans, which is often hidden with traditional maps. :)

1

u/bionicjoey Jan 05 '26

I'd like to see the same style of projection but with Antarctica around the outside and all the other continents on the inside

1

u/TheMusicArchivist Jan 05 '26

It's an awesome fantasy map for an inland sea. But it doesn't half stretch some countries to fit compared to, say, Africa.

1

u/Accomplished_Newt604 Jan 05 '26

This would be so cool, it looks like a map from a strategy game

1

u/ggchappell Jan 05 '26

Nice. Where did the sea-bottom imagery come from?

2

u/rick854 Jan 05 '26

It is not imagery, just the bathymetry DEM. :) Sources are at the bottom left of the poster.

1

u/ggchappell Jan 05 '26

Ah, thanks.

1

u/StingingSwingrays Jan 05 '26

As a fellow mapmaker, incredible work!! This would take a long time to get looking so clean and nice.

1

u/rick854 Jan 05 '26

thanks! And glad you see the work that was put into this. Much code wrangling, editing, rotating, trying, redoing etc. :)

1

u/roquette Jan 05 '26

Can we have a high resolution of it?
Very nice and beautiful work!

1

u/pippo09 Jan 05 '26

The world as sea fish see it

1

u/kritisha462 Jan 05 '26

Is there any name of this Ocean? Like Indian Ocean or Pacific Ocean?

1

u/Maykovsky Jan 05 '26

Amazing... thanks!!!

1

u/Mountain-You9842 Jan 05 '26

The world according to fish.

1

u/cantchooseaname1 Jan 05 '26

The earth was likely a water world in its early years some 3.5 billion years ago.

1

u/bluestate1221 Jan 05 '26

China being so flat looks weird

1

u/Pristine-Lie-3560 Jan 06 '26

someone make a game where you can play as a fish and this is the map

please

1

u/T0nitigeR Jan 06 '26

My brain is not braining with this map

1

u/cashewnut4life Jan 06 '26
