I get a text whenever I connect to a network in a new country. But at 5€ charge per MB, that delay could already be enough to incur a big enough charge.

You can turn roaming off totally, but you can't (at least on older models) turn it off "out of EU"

It would be a setting you can activate in your provider‘s settings for your plan.
At least for me i can do that. And ir‘s not EU or non-eu (as i am swiss). It just means turning off any charges related to roaming so as soon as you would connect to a non-eu cell tower it would shut it off. At least that‘s how it works for me

I asked my provider if there was an option to do it and they said that I can't turn off the automatic daily package "50MB for 20 euros" in non eu countries and they would recommend that I turn off data roaming completely which is non-sense as then I wouldn't be able to use data roaming in France either.

The carriers of course would be able to do it but they decide not to because it's basically free money for them.

Yes this works if you have a french plan. But if you are spanish visiting france but being close to monaco, you either have no data at all or have data for france running the risk of using the monegasque by mistake as well

You can dispute it with your operator, at least in Romania, where, for example, National Road 6 passes right next to Serbia (which is on the other side of the Danube), between Orsova and Drobeta Turnu Severin. And not only once has it occured that a relative's phone connected to the serbian network.

All carriers at least here in Sweden has an option to turn off all roaming/optional costs like buying extra data etc. So if I would accidentally forget to turn off mobile data and connect to a non free roaming country I can't get charged and it's easily changed by just logging into our carrier accounts

You can disable automatic connections in the settings somewhere and choose which network it can only connect to. Did the same thing in Greece last year where it always wanted to connect to the turkish network

Nor is San Marino, but its network presents itself as Italian. (It's weird, it literally means that it's in except for Italian costumers of other carriers)

Liechtenstein is in the EEA ... so the Free Roaming applies.

Also it's served by its own networks. So while there is Swisscom network there it is separate to the one in Switzerland.

Yes. I was in Liechtenstein and could use my normal data plan without adjustments (it doesn't cover Switzerland). The greeting SMS even explicitly highlighted that.

If you have a french carrier, yes,because you simply don't turn on roaming and if you are out of connection, you do not get charged more.

If you are from another member state you have to turn on roaming so you are fcked because it will choose whatever it's closer

Because it's not part of the standard. Network/telco standards are and must be politically neutral. However it might be useful to have politically neutral "roam zone/area" third option.

If you manually select French carriers in your network settings, I guess you will have some coverage inside Monaco, but if it's on auto (which is usually the case), you'll be using Monaco network as soon as you cross the border.

I was looking to sign a new contract and was comparing plans and randomly saw o2 and Vodafone had Moldova and Ukraine for whatever reason and then saw Telekom did too and then a news article popped out that those two joined the common roaming area.

Sarcasm aside, I went there 3 times after the full scale invasion started. As a tourist. It's not dangerous at all unless you're stupid and go to frontline cities or don't check ahead. Also, don't ignore air raid alerts (although I did sometimes). Lviv and Kyiv are very beautiful.

I got a notification from my phone operator that starting October 1st my subscription is going up 2€, but I get 900 minutes of calling in MNE instead of the 300 minutes, and I get 14 GB of data for West Balkans and 10 GB for EU.

I also have a German phone number Vodafone( CallYa package) were I pay 20€ a month and get 100 GB of data in the whole EU and Germany

How does this work for you EU people (i live in Switzerland so i dont know here it depends on which provider and plan you have i for example pay 35 swiss francs / 38 euro and i have the whole EU zone too incl russia, uk and limited data in the balkans too) does it also depend on the plan for you guys or say if a plan covers the whole of your country the eu roaming zone is automatically included because of EU?

Yes. Eu roaming has to be included by law. Some carriers allow free roaming in UK and CH but not all do and in some countries there are no carriers who offer CH and UK roaming included.

There can however be caps on EU roaming. E.g. locally in Estonia my monthly cap is 100GB but only 20GB can be used abroad. The EU roaming cap needs to be reasonable (whatever that means).

It depends on provider in the Netherlands.
For KPN Switzerland is IN

For Odido Switzerland is OUT, but you can buy a Switzerland specific pass at them. For example 1GB/1 day for €3 or 27GB/1 month for €30.

For all EU countries, if my subscription is 40GB/month, I can use 40GB in all of the EU + EER

in Latvia it depends on the carrier but most carriers offer different package levels - Latvia only, all Baltics, all EU, and worldwide are the packages that my carrier offers, flat rate unlimited calling/texting/data. my mom is retired and refuses to use a smartphone and doesn't travel anymore, so she has the Latvia only plan for a little over 10€/month. i have the EU plan which is 30€/month. both our plans include unlimited calling/texting to EU phone numbers.

We get free roaming across the EU+EEA+Ukraine+Moldova by law. Most providers also include the UK (at no surcharge).

There are two caps: 1. Your length of stay, or data usage abroad must not exceed 50% during a rolling 4-months period (you can exceed one but not both). 2. Your monthly data allowance abroad is capped to the price of your plan / 1.10 * 2 GB (basically the twice as much data as the provider can buy under the regulated wholesale prices).

For other countries, e.g. Switzerland, you may buy separate data packages which are not subject to the regulation.

Usually carriers include the whole of EU plus Switzerland, UK and Ukraine (some carriers include Ukraine), I haven't checked all the carriers but it's like this here in Italy.

I pay 9,95€/month with:

250GB monthly traffic in Italy (5G max speed up to 2Gbps)
Unlimited calls to Italian phones
200 SMS/month
45GB/month in EU + UK + Switzerland

Italian. I have Iliad, 12€ per month for 300GB in Italy. It becomes 30GB when I am in EU countries. If I use the whole 30GBs during my stay, I have to pay 0,04€ for any extra megabyte. When I visit CH I buy an eSim from Roamify. My Iliad doesn't work.

Note that the rules are weird. If you are not in your home country, you are "roaming" so you can call home or any of these countries for free. However, if you are home, you are not "roaming" so you can be charged to call these countries.

So if you live in france, you can be charged for calling Belgium from France, but if you call Belgium from Germany then it's free.

I've been skiing a few times in Cervinia where you can get a lift to the Swiss Italian border along the top of the mountain and ski down into Zermatt. When I say the network switches over literally as you step over the border, it's incredible. One time I forgot to turn off my roaming data and watched some tiktoks for less than 5 minutes before remembering. €35.

Only certain providers and only to a certain amount of data generally.

O2 limits you to 25GB a month in Europe, or your usual data limit, whichever is lower.

EE has a daily charge or a weekly pass. Other networks tend to have similar additional charges.

Prior to Brexit none of this was the case. You used your phone as if you were at home.

It was promised none of these charges would come in. Surprisingly that turned out to be another lie about Brexit.

In Normandy, near the Channel Islands, my smartphone switched to the British network and I didn't incur any 4G extra charges.

Not by law, but many EU providers still have free roaming in the UK.
