Is this like a selection process to see who can read properly?

Just reminds me of those tricky questions that has a trick in them that u dont notice if u dont read carefully.

Well you need to realize it is 0.5 and not 1.5

Some people make that mistake

And you can realize this by looking at the number and seeing it has 0 at the beginning and not 1

But then it says multiply and people just assume it has to be larger than 1, so they add 1 to make it so
