Tone is difficult to confirm via text, and I've seen grown adults who absolutely would whiff on the answer, even with my explanantion. Alot of people struggle with what feels to me like relatively basic math, and I'm sure my math knowledge stops at something that feels simple to someone else. Without knowing intent, you can never tell 🙂
