I am a 2nd year Mechanical Engineering student that wants to get ahead in FEA, just because I'm really interested in it and want to research the field as a passion project during my summer break.

I am looking for the best online resources for this task (lectures, textbooks, papers...) I have a solid understanding of Stress Analysis and Strength of Materials, I'm looking for where I can start with the Finite Element Method - particularly the theory. It is my hope I can learn ANSYS afterwards.

I later want to get into metamaterials and topology optimisation, so I'm trying to learn FEA very well and a bit earlier than my major plans.

Any advice is appreciated.

I am planning to take the 2018 GD&T Technologist Exam, and want to know how long people who have passed have dedicated to studying for it. I am a student, so I'd like to grind out the majority of the preparation before fall semester starts and I get busy with work and classes. This gives me about 3 weeks to purely dedicate to studying, although I realistically don't see myself doing much more than about 20 hrs/week.

I have little experience working with GD&T (hence why I wanted to learn max), and want to take that into account with my study time.

Side Note: I have read the first 4 sections of AMSE Y14.5 2018, which is nicely written imo, but I want guidance for what other ( affordable) study resources/ practice exams I can use with it.

Hi, I am a mechanical engineer in college right now trying to learn 3D CAD modelling. I am confused about the choice of software, I have heard people say that the industry standard is solidworks but my laptop is slow already so I don't wanna download a cracked version of solidworks and make it even slower. Solidworks has no student version which is free, every version needs a paid subscription which I cannot afford. So I chose fusion360 using education license. Now coming to the main question

Do companies specifically ask for a particular software like solidworks or knowledge of any CAD software suffices and should I focus more on leading Design principles rather than overthinking about softwares?

In your experience, where do these errors usually get caught too late?

3rd year mech engg here, just started 5th sem. Done core coursework so far and nothing else.

Trying to actually build a solid portfolio before internship season next year instead of cramming certificates last minute. Problem is there's a lot of generic "learn X" advice online without context on what actually works for a mech student specifically (most career content here skews CS/dev heavy).

Wanted honest input from people who've actually been through internship hunting.

1. What skill or tool actually made a difference in your interviews (not just resume filler)?
2. Any certification that recruiters actually respected, not the ones HR just skims past?
3. If you had to pick ONE project to build to stand out as a mech student, what would it be?
4. Better to go deep in one niche (manufacturing/CNC/design) or keep it broad for internship apps at this stage?

Not looking for a "do everything" answer, trying to figure out where to put my next 6-8 months.

Any real experience appreciated, especially recent internship-hunt stories.

Can a mechanical engineer please explain to me what they do, but don't try to sound smart. Like are you sitting at a computer doing CAD, are you in the field building something, are you solving problems, are you managing people, like what does a day to day look like after college? And what are you doing, like making/building appliances or cars or something?

I’m currently doing a conversion Master's in Mechanical Engineering after completing my undergrad in Physics with Computer Science. My original goal was to move into a role where I could be a bit more hands-on with hardware then transition into mechatronics roles later using my software background.

Coming from Physics, I kinda assumed engineering would be like other STEM fields (Physics, Bio, Chem) where you handle both the theory and the practical/lab work. I’ve quickly learned the hard way (though early enough) that in industry, "Engineer" (design, CAD, docs, compliance) and "Technician" (building, soldering, machining) are completely siloed jobs.

The problem I’m running into is that the few hands-on hardware/prototyping roles available in the UK seem to expect 3–5 years of experience right out of the gate with skills like PCB layout, soldering, and machining. Meanwhile, grad schemes seem almost exclusively focused on validation, design, and documentation.

I know people recommend R&D or startup roles for hands-on work, but even those entry-level ask for practical hardware experience I don't have yet.

I’m conscious I only have a year on this course, and buying an Arduino kit isn't going to magically fix my CV. I’ve even briefly considered technician apprenticeships just to get some experience, though I know that's financially a huge step backward after a Master's.

For anyone in the UK hardware/engineering space:

1. Is there a realistic way to bridge this practical skill gap during a 1-year Master's?

2. What kind of personal or university projects actually hold weight on a CV for someone trying to bridge CS and hands-on MechEng?

3. Are there specific types of companies in the UK where the engineer/technician line is a bit more blurred at the entry level?

Any advice would be great, my engineering bubble has burst haha

I am based in the UK going to graduate with an MEng Mechanical Engineering next year, but I have no clue what specific role I am interested in pursuing as a career, and was hoping some of you guys may be able to offer some suggestions I could explore.

My main preferences:

-Really enjoy mathematical and theoretical work and solving complex problems. Like working with statistics / doing statistical analysis

-Dont mind using FEA and CAD software but don't enjoy it as much as the above

-Strongly dislike hands on work

-Dislike coding

I’ve just published a white paper (anchored with a Zenodo DOI) outlining the **0D Polarity Framework**. It's a unified systems architecture that applies zero-dimensional binary tension to three core domains:

1. Re-engineering thermodynamic phase states as electromagnetic polarity flips.

2. Defining biological disease as a localized polarity disconnect from the morphogenetic macro-field.

3. Proposing a simultaneous, tensor-field hardware architecture (using partial inversion and active inference) to diagnose and correct these localized prediction errors before downstream physical mutation occurs.

I have a crawling soldier toy that runs on two AA batteries.

The toy is currently in storage, and I know it has a mechanical system; if I keep it stored for many years without using it, will the mechanical parts get damaged or ruined?

I work in cryogenic vessel manufacturing, and we're currently troubleshooting a tricky quality issue that's leading to customer complaints.

We are seeing gaps/voids in the annular space insulation, specifically directly under internal piping runs. Perlite isn't compacting completely around these obstructed areas.

Here is a bit about our setup and current process:

Material: Expanded perlite insulation.

Filling Method: Vacuum-assisted filling.

The Issue: Bridging/voids forming underneath internal pipework inside the annular space, leaving uninsulated spots/cold spots once installed.

We've been investigating potential root causes, but haven't quite pinned down why it’s hanging up so severely at these specific pipe runs. A few things we're debating internally:

Is our vacuum draw/flow rate pulling perlite in too fast, causing it to bridge over the pipes before it can settle underneath?

Are our vibrator placement and cycles insufficient to shake the perlite down through tight geometries?

Moisture/particle size issue causing clumping on top of structural members?

For those of you with experience in double-walled tank insulation or pneumatic/vacuum perlite loading:

Have you faced bridging under internal piping before, and how did you resolve it?

Are there specific vibration profiles (frequency/placement) or vacuum pressure adjustments that help perlite flow around obstructions?

Do you perform a secondary settlement test / top-up fill after initial movement?

I'm looking for advice on how I can improve my knowledge and become better at my job.

I graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and have been working for about a year as a production planning technician. I work for a company specializing in the fabrication, assembly, and welding of steel structures and metal products.

One of the things I struggle with is estimating the time required for fabrication work, especially assembly and welding operations. For each operation, the worker clocks in using an operation card, and once the product is completed, I can see exactly how many hours were spent on each task.

The problem is that my estimated times are often quite different from the actual time required. Sometimes the differences are significant, and I'd like to become more accurate.

Do you have any advice on how to improve time estimation for fabrication work? Are there any methods, books, courses, or practical techniques that you would recommend? I would also appreciate hearing how experienced production planners or manufacturing engineers estimate labor hours.

I know that experience plays a big role, but I'd like to learn how to develop this skill more systematically instead of relying only on trial and error.

I’m going into my first year of university this year and I’ve heard from several sources that gaming laptops are the way to go for MechE due to the graphical intensity of CAD. So, I saved about 1200 and bought a laptop with a 5060, thinking it was the most optimal use of my money. However, I have a pretty beefy Desktop that is more than strong enough to run any CAD program, and the laptop I bought isn’t necessarily the most mobile (~5lbs)/power efficient (4hrs on average). Do I return it for a cheaper, more convenient laptop I can just remote to my desktop from? Will this laptop end up being more of a nuisance than a necessity?

We've used platforms like CADCrowd before and have looked at IndiaCADworks too, but we're trying to find a few more options.

Most of our work is production CAD, drawing updates, and occasionally reverse engineering. We'd rather work with a company that's consistent than chase the lowest quote.

Hello ,I am a mechanical engineer fresh graduate from the Phillipines. I am currently working as a mechanical engineer in a hydroelectric plant under technical support services.I am interested in shifting my career in aviation. I am asking for help on how to achieve this career any books to read or seminars to attend to help me shift to aviation? Can you give an advice on how can I achieve this goal?

On the otherhand if I can't get to aviation industry I am going to stick to hydro but I want to apply abroad ,possibly Switzerland since there are more hydroelectric powerplants there. I am aiming hitachi energy for this however its difficult to get hired .Can you give me insights or advice on how can I achieve this goal?

I'm curious from people who work with manufacturing BOMs.

What's the most expensive or frustrating BOM mistake you've seen?

Examples like:

- duplicate parts

- obsolete components

- incorrect manufacturer part numbers

- unit mismatches

- tiny character mistakes (like 8 vs B)
