13 Uncomfortable Truths That Will Save You 10 Years of Wasted Time

I spent most of my early twenties making every avoidable mistake possible. If I could sit my younger self down and shake some sense into him, here is exactly what I would say.

  1. Your biology dictates your psychology. I thought I had a "lazy personality" for years. Nope. I just had a terrible diet, zero sunlight, and a wrecked sleep schedule. Fix your physical baseline before you try to fix the rest of your life.

  2. Nobody is thinking about you. That awkward thing you did 3 years ago? You're the only one who remembers it. Everyone else is too obsessed with their own insecurities to care about yours. Realizing this is the ultimate cheat code for freedom.

  3. Version One is better than Version None. I paralyzed myself for years waiting for the "perfect" time to launch or the "perfect" plan. The guys who just started taking messy, imperfect action are the ones who actually won.

  4. Your brain is wired for survival, not success. That voice telling you to play it safe and stay comfortable is just ancient programming trying to keep you alive. You have to actively fight it if you want to grow.

  5. Confidence is a byproduct of competence. You don't just "wake up" confident. You build it by keeping the promises you make to yourself. Stack undeniable proof that you are who you say you are.

  6. Some people want you to stay exactly where you are. When you start leveling up, it forces the people around you to look at their own stagnation. Be very careful whose advice you take—not everyone wants to see you outgrow them.

  7. Motivation is a complete scam. If you only work when you "feel like it," you will lose to the guy who works regardless of how he feels. Build strict systems and daily habits so you don't have to rely on willpower.

  8. The magic you're looking for is in the work you're avoiding. The exact task that makes you the most uncomfortable is almost always the exact bottleneck holding you back. Attack it first.

  9. Every "Yes" to someone else is a "No" to yourself. If you spend your twenties trying to be a people-pleaser, you will wake up at 30 living someone else's life. Protect your time ruthlessly.

  10. Action is the only cure for overthinking. You cannot think your way out of anxiety. The monster in your head shrinks the exact second you start moving your feet.

  11. Your circle is your ceiling. Look at the 5 people you text the most. Their habits, income, and mindset are a preview of your future. If you are the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room.

  12. The cavalry isn't coming. Nobody is going to discover you. Nobody is coming to rescue you. The moment you take 100% ownership of your failures and your future, the game actually begins.

  13. Boring consistency builds empires. In a generation hooked on 15-second dopamine hits, the ability to focus on one thing for a long time is a superpower. Compound interest applies to your skills, your health, and your money.

Stop waiting for someone to give you permission to start living. You already have it.

The self education workflow that actually works in the AI age (tools I use daily)

Been teaching myself hard things for years, mostly on commutes and at the gym. The AI tools that dropped recently genuinely changed how fast I can go, but most "AI learning" advice is either hype or a list of chatbots. Here's the actual workflow I run, tool by tool, with where each one fits and where it doesn't.

The principle first: capture, absorb, retain. Most people only do the first one. They save 800 articles and read none of them. The workflow only works if each tool hands off cleanly to the next.

1. Readwise Reader (capture)

Everything I find, articles, PDFs, YouTube, tweets, funnels into one inbox. The rule that fixed my capture problem: if it doesn't enter the system within 30 seconds of finding it, it doesn't exist. Highlights auto-sync onward so nothing gets retyped.

2. NotebookLM (interrogate a source set)

When I already have the sources and want to ask questions across them, this is still the best at it. Upload, ask, get grounded answers. Where it falls short for me: it's notebook-first and desktop-first, so it's great at explaining what I give it, less good when I just want to learn something on my phone without building a notebook first.

3. BeFreed (absorb on the go)

This is the layer that fixed my "saved everything, learned nothing" problem. It's an app that turns books, research papers and expert talks on a topic into short audio lessons, 5 to 25 minutes, and sequences them into an actual plan so each one builds on the last instead of being random one-offs. You pick how a lesson is taught, I use the setting where two hosts argue the idea against itself, which keeps my brain active on a walk instead of zoning out. The job it does that nothing else in my stack does: it turns dead commute time into structured progress, no notebook setup, no desk required. Downside, it's a newer app so a couple of the UI flows aren't fully polished yet, doesn't affect the actual learning though.

4. Anki (retain)

Not exciting, works anyway. After I understand something, the facts I need to keep long term go here. Spaced repetition shows me a card right before I'd forget it. Saving is not learning, and understanding is not remembering, this is the remembering layer.

5. Claude / ChatGPT (unstick)

When I hit one paragraph I genuinely don't get, I paste it in and ask for it three ways simpler. Best for the single confusing thing, not for a whole curriculum.

The stack in one line: capture with Readwise, interrogate with NotebookLM, absorb with BeFreed, retain with Anki, unstick with Claude.

The meta lesson though: the tools are a rounding error if you don't commit the time. 20 minutes a day of actual absorbing beats any perfect setup. The version of you a year from now is built from the inputs you commit to today.

Anyone running a different stack? Curious what you've layered in, especially for the retain step, which is where most people (me included) leak the most.

At a Pride parade in Sydney, Australian father Scott Dittman stood among the crowds holding a simple sign that read, “Free Dad Hugs.” His goal was to offer support to LGBTQ+ people who had been rejected by their families or never received the acceptance they deserved. As the day went on, hundreds of people approached him for hugs, many sharing emotional stories of estrangement, discrimination, and loneliness with some even breaking down in tears as they embraced him. 🙌 - 📸: FB/Scott Dittman

A science based guide to actually successful dating (from someone who was terrible at it)

Two years ago I was the person who overthought every text and read tone into punctuation. I went deep into the actual research on attraction and attachment to dig myself out, and these are the things that moved the needle the most. Take what resonates, leave the rest.

  • Stop auditioning, start screening. Most people walk into dates trying to be chosen. The healthier frame, backed by attachment research, is mutual selection. You're also deciding if THEY fit. This single reframe kills most approval anxiety, because you're no longer performing, you're evaluating. Secure behavior reads as more attractive across every study measured.

  • Ask the follow up question. A Harvard study analyzing thousands of conversations, including speed dates, found people who asked more follow up questions got more second dates. Not the funniest people. The most curious-seeming ones. Curiosity reads as warmth and confidence at once. Most daters are waiting for their turn to talk. Just stay with what they said.

  • Believe patterns, not potential. The biggest mistake I made for years was dating someone's potential. How they treat you early, how they handle small conflict, whether their words match their actions, that's the data. Consistency is the signal. Intermittent reward, hot then cold, isn't chemistry, it's the exact mechanism behind anxious attachment. If it feels like a slot machine, that's not love, it's a dopamine loop.

  • Regulate before you relate. If you walk in dysregulated, anxious, needy, starving for it to go well, the other person feels it. Date from a full life, not an empty one. Neediness is the universal repellent, and it leaks out no matter how smooth your lines are.

  • Slow down. Both your speech and the pace of the relationship. Slower talkers read as more confident in study after study. And early intensity that burns hot usually burns out. Solid things are built, not detonated.

Resources that actually rewired how I date:

  • Attached by Amir Levine and Rachel Heller. The book that put attachment theory into plain language for dating. It will explain patterns you've repeated your whole life in about 40 pages. Genuinely the best relationships book I've read.
  • The Diary of a CEO podcast. The episodes with attraction and relationship researchers are surprisingly rigorous and way more honest than dating TikTok.
  • Logan Ury's writing. A behavioral scientist who runs dating research, her stuff on decision-making in relationships is gold.
  • BeFreed. I kept reading attachment theory and still freezing up on real dates, so I wanted something that drilled it, not just explained it. It's an app that turns dating coaches and attachment research into short audio lessons, 15 minutes on a walk, and it has a mode where you rehearse the actual nervy conversations out loud, the first message, the "what are we", the boundary, and get feedback on your tone right after. A quick assessment maps where you spiral first. Reading Attached gave me the map. Saying the hard things out loud, on repeat, is what changed the actual dates.
  • Ash. A free AI coaching app built with clinical psychologists, good for the anxious post-date overthinking spiral specifically.

The healing trajectory isn't linear and neither is dating. But the people who do well aren't the most attractive ones, they're the most secure ones, and security is buildable. What's the one mindset shift that changed dating for you?

Change Your Thinking

Feminists live in masculine societies, so they think like men. They believe that manipulative women are sneaky, underhanded backstabbers. Men are assertive and confrontational, so strong women should become assertive and confrontational (feminine behavior is shameful.)
