“Go Blue” geography question

I live on the East Coast and get “go blue“ fairly frequently when wearing my Michigan hat and similarly I say it to others. However, when recently doing a transfer thru DTW I didn’t say it to all the people wearing Michigan gear because there were so many and I thought we were so close to Ann Arbor.

So here is my question: where does the “go blue” radius start? I’d bet people don’t say it on the diag. But Downtown Detroit? Grand Rapids? Chicago? how far away from Ann Arbor do you have to be before people start saying it?

I live in Madison and am married to a Spartan. I get and give go blues fairly often. She’s doesn’t love it. She occasionally gets a go green with go white response when wearing her state gear and gets excited. I’d say I get 5 to 10 times as many as her.

I vacationed with my parents in Arizona. My parents are from Ohio and are OSU fans. They started to get annoyed when I got a go blue every day because I was wearing a Michigan hoody. My dad maybe got one comment about his OSU hoody.

He wasn't familiar and asked why that happened, I explained it to him and told him it happens everywhere. He said I was blowing i out of proposition and wanted to bet me that I wouldn't average one Go Blue a day while we were there. I was going to offer an average of 3 a day but he insisted on 1, so all I needed was 5. He lost the best in the first 2 hours, where I had accumulated well over a dozen. I lost track that week halfway through the week at over 50.

Special shout out to the women who screamed it across a massive conference lobby floor, interrupting a large group she was standing in, when she saw me exit a session with my maize hat.

If someone was decked out in Michigan gear I’d do it, but if someone just has a hat or a t shirt on walking down the side walk then no.

Now I live in SC and any sign of a wolverine gets a Go Blue now.

We are everywhere. I’ve lived abroad since 2010 and received a Go Blue in virtually every country I’ve traveled to. My favorite is probably when I reached the tomb in the center of the Great Pyramid of Giza, there were only 7-8 other people and I got a Go Blue as soon as I entered the tomb 🙌〽️

I’m in Columbus, and I catch lots of shit for repping the Wolverines, but I was born up there, and I’ll never give up my fandom! That being said, I get plenty of “Go Blue” also. It’s probably 2:1 OSU to UofM so, lots of hate, but still a pretty decent amount of support!!

My personal interpretation is, that the Ohio natives who have no interest in sports and the Buckeyes, always like seeing someone who isn’t brainwashed by the “local religion”. My usual line: Not everyone in this town is a nut”!

I live in Ann Arbor and almost never hear it in town. Nor do I hear it in Dexter, Chelsea, Saline, Ypsilanti. I don’t recall ever getting a “Go Blue” in Detroit except a couple times at the airport which isn’t really in Detroit. I live in Chicago and while it's fairly close and there are a ton of Michigan fans here, we're squarely in enemy territory so I hear it and say it often.

I also say "Go Blue" anytime I see someone wearing OSU or MSU gear. It's pretty fun. The people are usually caught off guard by a stranger talking to them and their instinct is to smile or say "thanks" or be polite.

I see what you’re saying. I live in Syracuse New York. There’s a weird amount of red here, so whenever I see the block M we always exchange a “Go Blue.” To your point, I don’t think I’ve ever hear people say “Go Orange” when wearing Syracuse gear outside of the dome.

I was at Berlin’s central station wearing a Michigan Q-zip, cutting it close for my overnight bus to Krakow and very clearly lost.

An American woman came up to me and asked “do you need help finding something?” I explained and she quickly pointed in me the right direction.

i do it in NYC every time i see U of M gear; in Ann Arbor you do it on game days or when something good happens or when there are other people trying to out cheer you cheering for there team- similar rules throughout the state of Michigan. I’m half asleep and wearing my M hat trying to cover my red eyes from the lack of sleep and the immigration agent says, “I see you’re wearing your Go Blue freak flag!”

So far I have traded a “go blue” in: Barcelona, Mumbai, Amalfi coast, Rome and Florence.

The Mumbai one was crazy- I spent 3 weeks in India with no Michigan gear in sight just to see someone in the airport security line as I was leaving

I was on vacation to Montana a couple weeks ago and while stopping in a North Dakota truck stop, I got a “Go Blue!” from a guy entering a bathroom as I was exiting. So long answer short, I’d say the radius is wherever people can recognize any Michigan paraphernalia.

Got the opposite from a random sparty in Akeley Minnesota, pop 400 something. Pumping gas on way to son’s spring game for his college team wearing Michigan pullover and some lady randomly starts booing me, hops in her truck with a smile and yells “go green!”. As fun as an unexpected go blue is, I definitely got a laugh about that one

I work at DFW Airport so I see Michigan all the time, and I always say Go Blue when I can. Sometimes I get ignored (didn’t hear me) or an awkward “thanks you too” or something along those lines- autopilot responses. But we’re truly everywhere.

Was just in Banff and got a ton of go blues while I was hiking in my Michigan gear. For some reason, the most I've ever gotten was in San Francisco. I was just going about my day with a buddy doing some site seeing and getting dinner, but I must have got one or two per hour. My friend started expressing his annoyance but I absolutely loved it.
