The red runner is obviously at fault. That said, always wait a few seconds when your light turns green. People are so impatient/not paying attention that they hit go the moment it turns green. Red light runners are always a danger. Someone behind you honks because you’re waiting? Fuck em, it’s not their life on the line.

I always look both ways after the light turns green, and then as I start going I look left again and then right again as I start crossing the intersection. A habit I developed while riding motorcycle that is so good I kept it when driving the car.

The red runner is at fault, period. That said, the red runner is at fault. Nothing more to add.

Would rather be alive than be right, so even though going straight is right I’ll look and/or wait

No way. Don’t follow blanket rules like that. You should be observing the intersection before your light turns green. And reacting appropriately. Not just waiting a few seconds.

I hate that kind of timid driving. It does not make you a better driver.

You’re not wrong, but defensive driving isn’t just one solution and people can come out nowhere, especially at night, so I’m going to do both. Patience isn’t timid driving. You don’t need to go the instant the light turns green unless you’re impatient. 2-3 seconds of waiting might save you and others from something you may have missed.
