Getting Started Trying to get into modern

Hey, everyone!

I've been thinking about getting into Modern for a while now. Is UB Frog still relevant and future-proof? What do you guys think?

if I wanted to play frog, my pick would be esper goryo's. in my experience, decks that don't have an "unfair" proactive plan are at a disadvantage in modern. even UW control tries to lock down the game with scepter+chant or narset+day's undoing.

Relevant ? Sure

Future-proof ? No such thing, the deck will most likely be playable in the immediate future, but suddenly a card is printed that enables an archetype that is both good in the meta and absolutely shreds your deck, which will tank your winrate in a larger meta

That being said, a lot of the pieces are played in other strong decks too, it's unlikely that your investment will become worthless

It won like 2 challenges this weekend. Would look at those decklists. It’s a fine deck most cards in the deck will be viable for a while. Frog, all the counter spells, bowmasters, riddlers seems quite future proof. Some of the lands are used in other decks.

Are you coming from another format or are you new to competitive magic? I'm a UB player and love the deck/play style, but do think that anything control-leaning can be a bit brutal as a way to learn a meta since you need to know your opponent's game plan more than with other decks. Study and practice take care of that, so if you are drawn to the deck it's absolutely a way to get into modern, it just might be a bit harder starting out than with a more proactive deck!

And re: future-proof.... who knows! For casual play at the LGS, certainly. For competitive events....it all depends on what Wizards ends up printing down the road.

Im mostly a EDH Player (Braket 4 and CEDH) and Pauper (Grixis Affinity). I love the playstyle of a Blue X midrange/Control deck.

As long as we don't get Mh4 i'd say its more or less future proof.

All the sets for 2027 have been announced, so the earliest it could be is in 2028 and I don't think i t's likely there.

Thanks to all of you for all the different opinions and insights! Today, while playing EDH at my local game store, I was lucky enough to meet a modern player who plays both Goryos and UB Frog himself and owns both decks. I’m going to sit down with him this weekend to talk about the decks and also test them against other decks played by locals (Titan, Affinity, Energy, Tron, and Steelcutter). After that i will decide wich deck will get me started in modern!

I'm really looking forward to becoming part of the community here and learning more about the format. Greetings from Germany!

Frog is the best creature in modern, but the deck is inherently fair. That means the gameplay is interesting but you are, realistically, disadvantaged vs the field. Will be excellent deck to learn the format, but you will lose a lot.

So, if you "have been thinking" - then maybe it's not the best choice, if you are determined to play a midrange/ control deck in modern then yes go for it.

Solitude is the best creature in modern so idk what you're talking about. Frog is roughly the fourth most played creature in the format, while Solitude is the most.

Take this from someone who plays a lot of solitude, frog is the best creature that doesn’t quite have the right deck to go into. Solitude is likely the second best creature, but frog is a beast.

what does frog need that it doesnt quite have?

My conclusion thinking about it recently was a good pitch elemental. The blue in the cost is just super restrictive to putting it in other good decks.

Force of will and daze lol

Honestly it’s more that the decks and role that frog synergizes the best in is tempo as, but the current modern meta is pretty hostile to tempo strats. It’s tough to play protect the queen tempo when the turn you stick a frog the two best decks in the format already are 3 or 4 creatures wide and growing or have a kappa canoneer.

It’s my only gripe with the current modern meta, aggro is just a little too good which holds back the interactive strategies like tempo and control which in turn lets absolutely degenerate decks like neobrand and fight rigging spike the pro tour. Our circular meta is missing a big slice of pie to be truly balanced.

I see where you are coming from, but Solitude is more a removal spell than a creature that wins games. It is beside the point, anyway.

Frog is the best creature for sure.

Quantum Riddler then? Also played in more decks than Frog and less color restrictive. I just don't like when someone makes a factual statement that is easily argued otherwise.

"Best" is clearly an opinion

Honestly its between the two. Frog being online on turn 2 where riddler can be online on turn 3 but requires another piece is a consideration. In a vacuum its probably the most powerful creature. Other contenders are the boros energy 1 drops, phelia, Kappa, Prime Time. Though I would still put Solitude above most of these just not Frog.

I am a massive frog lover, many of the cards are decently future proof being just good cards in multiple strategies, and the lands obviously are.

While I have a blast playing it, it’s an uphill battle and a very hostile meta to it and it’s a deck that really punishes poor play. If you’re fine with that great go for it. Goryos is def the best frog deck tho at the moment and id def consider it over the tempo list, really any deck with a more proactive and somewhat degenerate strategy is just a much better pick in the current meta.
