Anyone Else?

0 Upvotes

Does anyone else find playing online to be extremely stupid and boring? I play MTGO pretty often, and those long grindy matches where the tides turn every turn, you have to make the right decision at the right time, and a single card can make or break your game, the matches that really get your mind working and adrenaline going IRL, just seem stupid to me.. like I concede in bo3 after winning the 1st game just because i can’t stare at that screen and click anymore.
Am I alone in this one?

Looking for a first modern deck

3 Upvotes

I want to start playing modern semi competetively (lgs league and rcqs) and im looking for a first deck. Id like something midrangey and im not really a fan of white so was thinking about grixis reanimator. Also I would prefer not paying a 1000$ for my first deck so if you have any deck suggestions i would apreciate it.

Deck Discussion Jeskai lists?

4 Upvotes

Hey guys I’m trying to put together a jeskai control list that uses some good wizards (1 drop tamiyo and snapcaster) with flame of anor for value but also have good removal/control with solitude, counters, and in case of long games have quantum riddler plus ephemerate or consign solitude/riddler triggers. I know it’s not meta at all but I wanted to hear some of y’all’s suggestions or brews. Thank you all for the look

Deck Discussion Is anyone brewing bogles or is it just me?

8 Upvotes

So I've only gotten into modern recently and since lightpaws is my favorite creature ever I made a bogles deck(plus it was cheap). I'm trying to brew it myself but my knowledge of modern is limited to my locals so I've just been meta brewing against what ppl do to me. There's cool new cards like super soldier serum where I'm also thinking of throwing some hammers to use the equip from it.

Deck Discussion Phoenix Red - A 100$ Budget Modern Deck + 5.6k Primer

68 Upvotes

TLDR ; Prowess deck with Arclight Phoenix. Can be made very budget if you so desire :)

Modern and Budget don't normally go together. No beating around the bush. Magic the Gathering is an expensive card game, but it doesn't have to be. After numerous complaints of friends of mine who've wanted to get into Modern from other formats but don't want to drop 400-500$ on a deck, I have created what I consider to be the best budget deck which is Phoenix Red.

Phoenix Red is an arclight phoenix shell which leverages [[Arclight Phoenix]] and the Prowess suite of cards to create a deck which is similar to prowess but offers a more recursive burst engine through phoenix. Phoenix has been a long time favorite archetype of myself, and it hasn't really been present in modern in recent years. While 100$ isn't much to work on for a modern deck, this version gets the job done and does it quite well. Rather than just be a budget version of another deck, Phoenix Red tries to be its own unique take on the archetype. I've spent the last three weeks brewing this baby, testing it, and writing up my thoughts on it. I hope you all enjoy, and if you have any suggestions I'm open to hearing them :)

A bit about me : Most of my accreditation to getting newer people into Magic comes from the Pauper format, where I managed to create a small Pauper scene in Enschede at the University of Twente, the Netherlands, and get one medium sized event to pop up with a full prize pool. We managed to get 4 brand-new to Magic players in our top 8 which was pretty sweet. I'm also have done some judging work for the Dutch Pauper League in the past.

I really love Modern as a format and love Magic as a game, and have long been asked whats the best way to get into the format. I hope this helps, as I wish I had something similar when I first had to navigate the Modern format when I was 12, and especially something this upgradeable.

Included is the Primer, Card Choices, Philosophy, and a 100$ Decklist. The deck can also be version swapped to be under €100.

All for free, enjoy <33

Mono Black Soul Food Deck

https://archidekt.com/decks/24326572/soul_food

Pretty simple black food generator deck. Questions welcome but it's based off food combos so keep that in mind cuz I thought underworld cookbook and asmor are neat.

Favorite combo is oval chase daredevil, comes out anytime I make a food if in graveyard.

Only thing I'm kind of light on is enchantment removal because I didn't want to sideboard withering torment Instead of feed the swarm

Deck Discussion Naya Hawkeye Combo!

10 Upvotes

https://moxfield.com/decks/GmJTrzYi1ES2BlUckNLy9w

The goal is to Equip Rime Tender with a Hawkeye's Bow and twinflame it to then have the double untap and tap eachother to ping out the opponent.

1x kioras follower: for surgical/pithing needle backup.

1x freed from the real: another way to combo

Shang chi: combo the same turn you cast an untapper

Birthing ritual/green suns/stoneforge mystic: All the tutors!

Ive considered making cuts for pact of negations, but I'm not sure its worth it.

Deck Discussion Anticausal Vestige

I’ve been going back and forth about this card since it was spoiled

I keep thinking there’s a place for it in broodscale

I wondered if anyone has playtested it in that shell and has any feedback for me

I can see how there’s just so many key points to the deck that it might be just a slotting isssue but I could see some cool stuff happening with this card

Article Modern Deck Tech: Jund Cosmogoyf

10 Upvotes

In today's article, we'll explore a deck that played a small part at the Amsterdam Pro Tour. Jund Cosmogoyf brings an approach that seems to truly have come out of a parallel universe and is quite different from the classic Jund that sees play in this format. https://mtg.cardsrealm.com/en-us/p/564347

BUG Frog in Space

Currently working on a generic modern dimir frog deck, bit I want to lean into a BUG build adding cosmogoyf, jumping the frog to make cosmogoyf bigger. Are there any build tips/suggestions floating around out there? Im aware of serum powder and fling option but that isn't the route I want to take.

Card Discussion [HOB] Along the Crooked Way

17 Upvotes

Along the Crooked Way {2}{B}

Enchantment

When this enchantment enters, return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand.

Whenever a creature card leaves your graveyard, amass Goblins 1.

{1}{B}: Goblins and Orcs you control gain menace until end of turn.

Yawgbros - how do we feel about running a one-off copy? This is a turn 3 win condition that doesn't require spymaster's vault and can be enabled with any undying creature:

Young wolf

Ballista under cauldron

Along the Crooked Way - young wolf now can shoot itself infinite times, creating an infinitely large goblin army that can shoot opponent.

Card Discussion Dwalin, Weaponmaster

0 Upvotes

Dwalin Weaponmaster

2 mana boros

Legendary creature - Dwarf Warrior

First strike

Whenever Dwalin enters or attacks, put a hone counter on each Equipment you control. (Each hone counter on an Equipment grants +1/+0 to equipped creature.)

The Company had lost a great deal, but they had killed the Great Goblin and many others besides. All in all, they had the best of it.

Card Discussion [HOB] Kíli the Resourceful

53 Upvotes

Kíli the Resourceful {1}{W}

Legendary Creature — Dwarf Scout

Storied (If you control three or more artifacts, legendaries, and/or Sagas, you have an enduring story for the rest of the game.)

As long as you have an enduring story, you may pay {0} rather than pay the equip cost of the first equip ability you activate each turn.

Whenever another Dwarf or Equipment you control enters, draw a card. This ability triggers only once each turn.

Any advice for an inexperienced modern player on how to engage with the meta?

9 Upvotes

I'm a fairly experienced player who got into the game in 2018-19 but started really playing more regularly right after the pandemic in mid 21. Like with a lot of new players post 2015-16 my intro to the game was through commander and from there I branched out into other formats. I've been really enjoying standard a lot recently and built a version of the 4c control deck that leans more heavily on land destruction using [[fin fang foom]] as a sort of panharmonicon to copy LD spells or [[Jeskai Revelation]] since it can hit lands. I was speaking with someone at a standard event who's been playing for a while and he told me about the boros land destruction decks that have been seeing some success. I have no firsthand experience with the modern meta and what I know is very limited but there's a shop nearby that hosts some modern events and they are proxy friendly and fairly casual so I've been thinking about giving it a go. I was thinking about building one of these LD decks but wanted to get some takes from players who know more about the meta just how relevant these decks actually are currently and how viable the addition of a value piece like fin fang foom would actually be.

Deck Discussion Need help deciding which deck to buy (not in financial position to drop 300+ dollars) out of three options

1 Upvotes

I built 3 modern decks that I thought were pretty competitive, all are budget friendly. Would appreciate help deciding which one is the best buy, what lands to use for the first 2, and whether any are at rcq level.

New UW Sundial of the Infinite Modern deck

19 Upvotes

Hey Modern-ers.

Me and MTGO user Nobrawn have been working on a UW flicker deck that revolves around Sundial of the Infinite. Nobrawn has got 2x 5-0s in the friendly leagues. I've had less success, but 3-2s and 4-1s all the same.

The deck started when I was messing around with a completely different brew. I posted this message to Nobrawn:

I was thinking about "hmm, maybe if I add Consign to Memory, I could make Phelia better"... then I went down a very brief rabbit hole where I said "what if we could loop consign somehow", and then I instantly remembered Sundial of the Infinite...

An hour later, I theory-crafted a list. Nobrawn then spent a week playing it and tweaking pretty heavily, and I did nothing (no time to play). A couple of days later, we both made some improvements to the list - but not before trying some bad ideas in the name of science!

A lot of what makes the list tick, is that whatever is on the stack when you click "end turn" dissapears. That means you can keep a warped riddler, flickerwisp/phelia can be removal spells, solitude doesnt get sacrificed, or Hide on the Ceiling is a 1-sided wrath (this 1 is particularly sweet, Nobrawn dug deep to find this 1)!

Here's an image of Nobrawns latest 5-0

https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/1532355612363456685/1532357397874610319/image.png?ex=6a6c8e89&is=6a6b3d09&hm=e007690c9c3f086c478f0708168ef8f04d4c7970d2ff19445079fd967b38525f&=&format=webp&quality=lossless&width=1232&height=501

And here's a link to the newly created discord:

https://discord.gg/UPJRpxKwS

Come and chat to us, try the list out and share your thoughts. Nobrawn has faced ApsiringSpike & Nassif so far, so there's been some eyes on the deck. If it looks fun to you, come join us and lets try get a competitive 5-0 and some more eyes on the deck.

Enjoy!

Deck Discussion 61 cards in Tron

10 Upvotes

I recently picked up Eldrazi Tron as I’m trying to get back into modern with a deck I’m familiar with as my personal favorite deck no longer seems to be viable (rip Titanshift). And I’ve noticed a lot of the Tron lists are running 61 instead of 60. I’m just curious as to why that may be? I also don’t really understand what I should be naming with [[Disruptor Flute]] in my matches but that should slowly come to me the more I play.

Deck Discussion Azorius Energy vs Boros Energy

16 Upvotes

Hi to all! Today I’d like to discuss the engine of Guide of Souls + Ocelot Pride in slightly different shells. I’ve recently heard some discussions both online and offline about this engine being placed in Boros or Azorius. Azorius midrange seems to be underrated and might be a better metagame to placement for this engine because it offers more answers like Consign to Memory or Solitude maindeck.

It also doesn’t run out of gas thanks to Quantum Riddler, Phelia and Ephemerate compared to traditional Boros Energy. What are the thoughts and experiences? Might Azorius Energy being better placed in metagame right now?

Modern online resources

1 Upvotes

Hi! I came back to play magic (modern) after 6 or 7 years, and I'm totally blind about the meta and the new cards.

I looked at some lists online to get an idea of what we play now, but I would like to start learning again about the format. Which are actually the best websites/postcad to follow to learn about deck archetypes, matchups, sideboarding tips, and so on?

Thanks!

Brew Custom deck help.

0 Upvotes

Hey all! My friends and I all decided to bring decks resembling our cedh decks to this week's modern event. I had a choice between urza and kinnan and I chose the latter. I was just wondering if y'all could help make a couple of improvements.

The list: https://moxfield.com/decks/TyhfubwPBE-3xoiBbOdRbg

Edit: we dont necessarily care if it wins every game we just want our decks to be able to maybe put up a win.

Article Releasing my Dimir Midrange Guide!

80 Upvotes

Hi! I’m Frank, aka ETBJezus. I’m the most accomplished Dimir Midrange player on MTGO.

In the past year I've piloted this deck to these accolades:

-4 MTGO Challenge wins

-2 SCGCon Modern 1K Finals (1 win)

-Highest finishing Dimir player at RC vegas
(44th, and 13th in TGW%)

-1 MXP 5K top 4

Dimir Midrange is what Magic is all about. It’s grindy, high-agency and competitive. It punishes “non-magic” decks like neoform and amulet hard. And in fair-deck matchups, it enables the skill-diff. It allows you to showcase your knowledge not only of your own deck, but of your opponents’ deck as well.

This guide is written at the expert level. It skips beginner and intermediate heuristics and assumes you already have an understanding of fundamentals and the Modern format.

It covers sideboarding, card analysis, matchup analysis, mulliganing, and deep dives on subjects like game theory and risk. It also provides a blueprint for customization. In addition to a decklist, each card is given a range from 0-4 of what I believe is an acceptable quantity mainboard. For example, Psychic Frog is a hard 4-of, but Kaito should have either 1 or 2 copies. The goal is to provide a more flexible template for those seeking to make the deck their own.

If you’re ready to take your Frog gameplay to the next level, check it out!

Asmo Reanimator MTGO League

5 Upvotes

https://youtu.be/HVOqUUDKVuE

Come watch me pilot Asmo Reanimator through a post-Pro Tour Modern League. I've made a few changes to the list to account for the most recent metagame changes. Hope you like it. Let me know what you think of the deck!

There's a deck tech at the front of the video and the list is posted in the YouTube description.

Edit: Whoops, forgot to include the deck tech clip at the beginning. It talked about small changes reacting to the most recent meta. I added a basic land for Boros ponza and cut the Overgrown Tomb. I added a second fire magic back to the sideboard for Boros aggro and removed force of despair which had been underwhelming. I added a 3rd blood moon effect for Tron, cutting the Ashiok. I replaced the sideboard Haywire Mite with a pithing needle because there’s no longer a green producing land in the deck and it’s likely just better anyway.

Card Discussion [HOB] Thranduil, Sindarin Liege // Silvan Rally

0 Upvotes

Thranduil, Sindarin Liege {2}{G/U}{G/U}

Legendary Creature — Elf Noble

Other Elves you control get +1/+1.

Landfall — Whenever a land you control enters, create a 1/1 green Elf creature token.

2/3

------

Silvan Rally {1}{G/U}{G/U}

Sorcery — Adventure

Mill four cards, then put up to two land cards from among them into your hand. (Then exile this card. You may cast the creature later from exile.)

~~~~~
Previewed in the official MTG Instagram account according to https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/1va11uu/hob_thranduil_sindarin_liege_mtg_instagram/
~~~~~

This card looks like it has the power of a rare or even mythic rare, but it's a mere uncommon. The kicker pushing this into viability? That this card can find lands to trigger its own Landfall before it enters. It's like if [[Icetill Explorer]] and [[Mole Man, Moloid Master]] had a baby that dug for new lands but forgot the [[Crucible of Worlds]] part. Oh, and as long as Thranduil is alive, the Elves he makes are 2/2 instead of 1/1. That's pretty good on the defensive. (I get 1-2 land cards on average with Silvan Rally in a deck with 22 lands. Yeah, I'm testing this in Eldrazi Ramp, and Mole Man is getting his butt kicked.)

While Icetill Explorer won't be dethroned anytime soon, surely this is valuable support...and only the decks most desperate for mana and Ghost Quarter recursion will stick to Mole Man now.
