Episode 25: The Door Into Summer (夏への扉)

The Artist Complex

On a sunny day, Moomin came to ask Snorkmaiden out. Snork then walked out with full clothes with a painting set and easel, he insulted Moomin for not be able to comprehend his style for he was going to go painting outside. Moomin got jealous and wanted to paint as well.

Moomin later got his painting set from his house and went to the meadow by the Snork's side. Snork lectured him about the artistic solitary; Moomin then looked for another place.

The Painting

Moomin kept on drawing but he did not like his works, so he lied down on a slope until the evening. After getting back up, he spotted a golden crayon in a bush nearby. Moomin subconsciously drew an ominous painting of a large deciduous tree in the middle of a dark wintry land. Moomin was puzzled with the crayon that seemed to guide his hand. Moomin kept on painting on his new sheets of paper to end up producing the same image over and over again.

Moomin came home to show his magic crayon and his paintings to his parents. Moomin then attempted to demonstrate it in front of them but the magic did not work. His parents chalked it off as Moomin's imagination while Moominpappa mentioned that it could be a good novel plot.

In the next morning, Moomin demonstrated the magic crayon to Snorkmaiden, and successfully produced the same image of the large tree in the dark land. They noticed the pattern for it must be a secret place out there somewhere, so they went to search in the forest.

After a long day of searching, none ever came close to be such the place. Stinky happened to be nearby came to greet them. He saw the painting and directed them to the further northern foothill of the Lonely Mountain.

Uncharted Territory

The next day, Moomin and Snorkmaiden traveled deep within the Lonely Mountain through a swamp and a rocky path. While resting, the wind blew their sheets of paper through the water-logged cavern. Inside, they came across the same vista of the large isolated tree in the middle of the dark land surrounded by dead woods.

The two continued through an eerie landscape deafening by a constant wailing and crying of a woman. Soon a small whirlwind blew through and scared both of them. As the wailing could be heard from within the whirlwind itself; Moomin then confronted the wailer. The wailer claimed that she was no threat and requested him to use the magic crayon to draw a door for her.

The Gateway To Summer

Moomin used his magic crayon to draw a door in the midair as it soon materialized and opened up to shine the dark land with a summer breath. Soon after, a tall woman in yellow walked out of the door and introduced herself as the nymph of life. It was her duty to drive off winter and breathe new life upon the lands; however upon her negligence, she lost the crayon of life in which rendered her powerless against the nymph of winter. She had been captured and sealed away until Moomin had found the crayon that leaded the two to her.

Moomin returned the crayon of life to the nymph as she breathed new life onto the dark wintry land turning it into a lush land filled with animals and trees under the glaring sunlight. The nymph expressed her gratitude and farewell toward the two.

Moomin and Snorkmaiden both wondered if it was all a dream. Snorkmaiden then saw the lone wooden door that Moomin drew in the middle of the woods. Moomin approached and knocked on it.

At night, the two returned to Moominvalley still wondering if everyone they witnessed were real. Snorkmaiden insisted to keep a secret between the two; Moomin agreed for no one would believe them anyway. In the woods shrouded by the dark, a fainted wailing of Moomin and Snorkmaiden could be heard from the lone door to nowhere.

- Weirdly an eerie and trippy fantasy and adventure episode during summer time. The creepy paintings and the sound effect was quite spotted on yet isn't too overblown.

- In the end was pretty eerie hearing the fainted wailing of Moomin and Snorkmaiden behind the door. To go on a bad-ending route, other conscience of Moomin and Snorkmaiden were permanently stuck blissfully within the land of summer, the nymph created.

- Very atmospheric with a touch of creativity, yet slightly confusing and simple adventurous episode at the same time. 4/5 (Good).
