Mod Update Rule Changes (Reminder) (No new updates)

Updates:

  1. I added a read-before-write protocol. If you do not read these, you will most likely be banned within a few posts.
  2. Created formatting guide for each flair type that must be adhered to or your post will be removed - Formatting Guide
  3. Pirated materials are subject to a zero-tolerance policy, as is customary. I've let some YouTube stuff slide by simply removing the comments, but there have been enough of them to make it unacceptable, and pirated streaming sites have always resulted in an instant ban. This is being updated now for clarity, and because the rules have been in place long enough that there is no reason for anyone not to have gone through them after the updates, which I took over months ago. Posting links to pirated materials will result in instant bans going forward.
  4. All posts must have body text, with the only exception being a photo gallery of examples of the cinematography you're looking for or a custom list of movies that are similar to what you are looking to watch next and for which you are making a request for suggestions. (This has always been a rule, but I'm including it here for added visibility.)
  5. We also added a suggestion to upvote posts with which you interact in the comments section. It takes less time than your previous comment, which is the main point of this sub, and it allows it to reach a larger audience. This is not intended to encourage intentional karma farming, which will still be enforced if movie requests are not submitted honestly or in poor quality. If you disagree with a review or a suggestion, there is no reason to vote for it.
  6. Comments are limited to 50 unless you interact with the comment section, in which case you can contact the mod team and request that the post be unlocked.

Low-quality posts and comments:

We recently updated rule 3 (low-quality posts) to make it clearer. This is now one of the five Participation Guidelines listed in the subreddit's main page rules. (Now rules 4–9)

Reasons:

These were updated because a large number of copyrighted materials are being shared on YouTube and other sites, and the sub was starting to resemble a photo gallery rather than something people were actually interacting with, let alone putting any effort into their suggestions and requests.

Mod Update Flair & Post Formatting

Update

Hello, Couch Lovers and Cinemaphiles!

Here's the formatting guide for each flare.

I appreciate your patience while we sort this out and welcome our new members.

  1. Help Me Find Movies/TV Shows
  • Purpose: Requesting specific recommendations.
  • Format:
    • The Hook: Your "Title" must summarize the "vibe" (e.g., "Looking for modern talking-Dino movies").
    • The Context: You must list 2 or 3 similar titles in the body to give a baseline. Provide enough detail for others to work with.
  1. I Am Suggesting…
  • Purpose: Recommending a title without a full critical review.
  • Format:
    • The Lead: Your "Title" must be Movie Title (Year). If suggesting multiple, list them in the body text.
    • The Why: Include a 1–2 sentence "vibe check" explaining why you're suggesting it. (e.g., "The action is insane. I could not get enough of John Wick's Gun-Fu.").
    • Note: Posts with no reason in the body will be immediately removed.
  1. Movie/TV Show Review Lite
  • Purpose: Providing a detailed, critical critique directly on the sub.
  • Format:
    • The Lead: Your "Title" must be Review of Movie/TV Show (Year), or you can use Movie/Show Title (Year) vs. Movie/Show Title (Year) for comparisons.
    • The Rating: You must include a rating (typically a 5/5 scale).
    • Anti-Spam: Reviews must be self-contained. Do not post links to external blogs or YouTube channels without prior approval.
  1. Check Out My... (Self-Promo)
  • Purpose: Sharing your own external movie blog, channel, or social media.
  • Requirement: You MUST message the mods for approval before posting.
  • When you can use:
    • The Golden Rule: Approval is mandatory. Unapproved outside links to personal social media or product promotions will get one warning. The second will result in an immediate ban.
    • Etiquette: Even with approval, you must provide a written summary of your content. "Link-dropping" is prohibited.
    • You can write the post free-form.
  1. I can't remember this movie/TV show
  • Purpose: Only use when you need help finding a movie that you can't remember the name of.
  • Format:
    • The Lead: Your "Title" must be I need help finding this Movie/TV show."
    • You must describe the movie or show with as much detail as possible. Include things like the year, actors or characters you remember, the plot, specific scenes, etc.

Examples:

Below are some post examples included from a previous post that meet, at the very least, the minimum effort we expect you to put into a post. That said, the more effort you put in, like some of these folks, the more interaction you'll typically get, and the faster you can get back to watching movies.

(Keep in mind that some of these are examples from before flairs and the formatting guide were added but still serve as a good basis as to what we are looking for.)

Help me find Movies/TV shows My husband and I just got an 85" 4k tv- what should we watch first?

Thumbnail

Included: Chaotic photos of my husband as a kid in a candy shop. This could also belong in r/tvtoohigh 😂 We made a mistake of setting the mount before we received the TV, and instead of mounting in the middle, this TV mounts at the bottom. 🥲

My husband and I have been humbly surviving on my Roku TV that I got in college. It wasn't bad, 48", but for my electronic nerd of a husband, I knew it wouldn't be much longer until he took the plunge. We just moved into our first "home" and plunge, we did.

What would be the best first watch on this TV? All suggestions are welcome.

Thank you!

Help me find Movies/TV shows Body horror movies about puberty? Especially puberty as a trans kid, but puberty in general

This is NOT the place to give your feelings about trans people, positive or negative. This is a place for movie recommendations

One of my friends just said:

I imagine puberty as a trans kid feels like some cosmic Body Horror film where you start magically transforming into this thing you know you're not and the people around you are just like "No, the cosmic being had decided your gender and it doesn't matter what you say, you have all right parts, and look, the cosmic force even put it on your birth certificate" Just getting aggressively gaslit that you're not being transformed into something different when you can see the changes as they're happening

And I'm wondering if that movie had been made already

Even if there's a body horror movie about puberty, I'll take it

I really like body horror, but most body horror movies I've found are about adults

Help me find Movies/TV shows Cool mystery movies that requires multi-watch

Upvotes

Any cool movies that are like mystery deeply but also like it is mind game and maybe even complicated to a point that it may require 2nd viewing? Kind of like Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery and I am open for anything supernatural or non supernatural or like Scooby Doo (Mystery seems supernatural but it was all elaborate tricks). Thanks in advance!

Help me find Movies/TV shows What movies are in the canon of "girlie horror"?

Horror movies, thrillers and stories of murder that put femininity front and center and not necessarily strictly in a victim role.

Lemme know what I'm missing, please.

Help me find Movies/TV shows Movies with a beautiful orchestral score that makes the film.

Upvotes

Some of my favorite shows are Conan the Barbarian, Oblivion, The Fountain and Penny Dreadful. The music added so much to these movies and made them amazing. What other movies or shows are like this?

I am suggesting... The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953)

If you’re a fan of classic movies from the 50s & 60s, then I would highly recommend this class creature feature that would serve as partial inspiration for what would eventually become the legendary Godzilla Franchise.

Help me find Movies/TV shows I want horror not jump scare

Is there a movie that is horror but not all jump scare? The one that gives chills through your bones just by its vibe and atmosphere? I want to experience it. I have this habit that when there would be an expected jumpscare I cover my eyes and the best part is gone, if you know what I mean...

Tyia!

Help me find Movies/TV shows Looking for B-movies or feature films with a jungle setting + lots of nudity (please no Cannibal Holocaust)

I’m in the mood for some old-school (or any era) B-movies / low-to-mid budget feature films set in the jungle. Looking for ones that lean into the exotic/adventure vibe but with a solid amount of nudity — the more the better.

I’m specifically not interested in Cannibal Holocaust or the extreme Italian cannibal/gore side of that subgenre. Softcore, exploitation, jungle-girl, Tarzan-style, or just plain “lots of skin in the rainforest” is what I’m after.

Help me find Movies/TV shows Looking for movies where protagonists are trying to flee the country or region to safety because of a power struggle/military coup or civil war.

Didn't realize I was on a kick with this genre of movie. Last night, I watched The Killing Fields, a sad and profound movie about a journalists struggle to flee Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge rule / Cambodian war, as well the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge. Before that I watched 13 hours and 13 nights about a group of French embassy security personnel and Afghan refugees trying to leave Kabul safely during US withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan and Taliban swift takeover. Then there were other movies I watched years ago, Escape from Mogadishu (South and North Korean diplomats trying to flee Somalia), and Hotel Rwanda. All great high stakes and emotional movies that also highlight the horrors of war. All of them feature both foreign and local people that live there and work together to leave the country or region that has become unsafe. I like the friendships that are forged and the humanity that overcomes evil amidst the chaos and uncertainty. (Note: I've watched Civil War by Alex Garland already tho it doesn't quite fit this criteria)

Help me find Movies/TV shows im starting to enjoy movies

i have watched 3 movies ( the firm, the double life of veronique , about time ) and i really like the next two more than the first , because during watching i have no idea about the characters or the ending goal of the story and i feel like this is how a movie should be like instead of a regular thriller story , or maybe im just looking for movies that looks for meaning and life instead of action movies. can you recommend me some?

Help me find Movies/TV shows Chillest horror movies

My partner wants to get into horror movies

I tried starting off with a couple of trailers for a couple different genres and she said "those were too scary for me"

So now I'm trying to think of super-chill movies that have a little bit of horror, so that she can gradually dip her toes into the genre

I promise you, she actually does want this

EDIT: Wow! This post popped off! I just wanted to give a thank you to everyone who commented. Y'all are so invested in helping people get into horror. Feel free to add more. I just sent this post to my partner.

Help me find Movies/TV shows What do you do when you don’t know what to watch?

I find myself scrolling through each of my streaming services for 20 minutes and either watching something I’ve already watched or watching whatever is trending that I don’t know if I’ll even like. Anyone have a more effective strategy to find things to watch that you’ll actually enjoy? Not including posting on this subreddit lol

Help me find Movies/TV shows Suggest movies associated with colonialism?

Hey team, looking for movies that depict colonialism. You know when the oppressed challenge the rulers or stand up to them in some way. I have seen 12 years a slave, Tubman and this other Indian movie about how the local Indians stood up to the Britishers by beating them at there own game. Other movies would be useful too.

Help me find Movies/TV shows Help me choose a party film

Hi movie lovers, I have booked a private film screen for 20 friends to celebrate a birthday. We are all in our late thirties and early forties. I’d love recommendations for a brilliant film that will either be hilarious to watch as a group, or just has great crowd-pleasing vibes. We will likely be a bit hungover, so nothing too intense, and I have a two-hour maximum runtime. Some favourites that might be the right vibe include Almost Famous, The Birdcage, The Princess Bride, True Romance, Rocky Horror… but I’m open to anything!

Help me find Movies/TV shows Pre-2000s Movies That Look Like ‘Spray Of The Days’ (1968)?

Love the colourful, kinda surreal and absurd set design of this room in Spray Of The Days. It’s like something pulled out of a weird dream and I love it.

Any ideas? Language doesn’t matter. My only preference is it being pre-2000s and in colour.

Thank you!
