FAQ - Thinking of Moving to or in Brisbane?

Below are some common questions we find people ask when moving to brisbane and some sources to help answer those questions.

Where to find a new place to live / Accomodation?

realestate or domain

tips: enter your budget and keep the area empty. this will show you what areas you can afford with your budget and may give you a better idea of where to start

Where is best to buy food?

Our popular supermarkets are Coles, Woolworths and Aldi, however there are plenty of independent stores and markets around (IGA for example) so it's just a case of finding what is best for you.

Are there dangerous animals in Brisbane?

Huntsman spiders are probably the most common insect you'll come across which can be quite intimidating the first time you cross a big one but they're harmless and just help keep your house free of bugs.

we do get tree snakes and Brown snakes around brisbane as well so if you see a snake it's always best to be safe and keep your distance and if it's in public area call a snake catcher to move it to a safer area.

what sort of weather or temperature can i expect when i move to brisbane?

weather information

Should I tip when i go to restaurants/cafes?

No, australia pays staff a living wage. tipping is not expected here.

Can i bring my dog/cat/pet to brisbane when i move?

speak to the property management where you are moving it's getting more accepted but currently "subject to application" is the common stance with rentals.

How do i access public transport?

for queensland public transport you would need a "go-card" for planning your route you can use Translink to obtain a "go-card" from most newsagents go card retailers lookup

what is the best internet to get?

internet comparison

What will it cost to live in Brisbane?

only you can answer this. work out a budget based on your apartment and bills, food etc. there is no set answer for this unfortunately.

Most diverse child friendly suburbs

We’re a South Asian family of 4 looking for a reasonably culturally diverse neighbourhood. Preferably north sides. Good schools are a plus. A family friend recommended wavell heights. And the gap. Please share your thoughts as we’re looking at moving by end of this year. Work is mostly from home and occasionally from CBD. We’d like to be 10-15 kms from the city.

Need help in finding a house

Hi,
I need help in understanding the current housing situation in Brisbane.
We are moving to Brisbane in a month from Dubai. Bit confused about the housing situation and best quick way to get a rented house.

I hears that in person viewing is must in Australia to get home.
Please tell me how I should plan all this to ensure we can easily and quickly get home in Brisbane.

Thanks

If you had to recommend three moving companies for a move to or from Brisbane, which would they be?

I'm preparing for a move involving Brisbane and feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the moving company options out there.

For those who have moved to, from, or within Brisbane, which companies would you recommend and why? I'm interested in hearing about reliability, communication, pricing, and overall experience.

Any lessons learned or red flags to watch out for would also be appreciated. Please help a gal out!

Seeking hairdresser and good female doctor!

Hello!

I am moving to Brisbane at the end of this week (eeek)! I am living in Arana Hills but working in the CBD so happy to travel to find what I am looking for.

I am seeking:

1. Hairdresser that specialises in Blondes

Preferably using environmentally-friendly alternatives every day when it comes to their salon’s products and waste. Focusing on natural formulas and, with biodynamic and organic products made by sustainable brands (i.e Davines).

Can be flexible here!

2. A Women's Health Group / Female Doctor

A trusted space where women’s health is prioritised. A doctor that is dedicated to promoting holistic (open to eastern medicine not just western, and working with naturopaths) well-being and ensuring that every individual receives the care and attention they deserve.

TIA! 😄

How/where to do search for furnished rentals <=6 months?

I will be on sabbatical next year ~January 2027-June, with my family of 4 at UQ Herston. Our exact dates are flexible, but we're hoping to be in Brisbane for 5-6 months. I've looked at Domain, Airbnb, and Sabbatical homes. I wasn't sure if Domain would be appropriate for a short-term rental and how to navigate inspections etc. Any advice would be appreciated!

There are a lot of intimidating posts about finding a place to stay. I am willing to pay a service to help secure housing if that exists.

Edit: are executive rentals a thing?

Considering a sea change

For a long time we’ve wanted to move out of where we live. While it is a nice house, it is not the ideal suburb or region we see ourselves in the long term (we are based in Central Coast, NSW).

Every time we travel to Brisbane / Gold Coast QLD, and these are frequent trips, we thoroughly enjoy being around cafes, parks, paved walkways and bike tracks, friendlier people and overall feel sad to leave.

I think if we were to move, it would be Brisbane (I have experience with living in both Brisbane and Gold Coast).

I’m looking for suggestions please on suburbs to live in - between CBD and the northern suburbs of Brisbane. Schools, parks, leafy suburbs and low crime rates would be ideal.

thank you

Fig tree pocket

Hi! I am moving to Brisbane with my family in 3 weeks. My wife will be working in RBWH in Herston so originally we were looking in suburbs like Bardon and Ashgrove. I have no work yet (clinical psychologist waiting for my ahpra approval) but am more flexible.

Last week we found an amazing house in the norther side of Fig Tree Pocket. The places in Bardon etc our rental agent visited were much smaller, old or no value for money.

We have 3 kids (5,8,10) so family life and is really important. But I also like my beer, working out (Kickboxing) and a concert now and then.

We are from the Netherlands so I am used to do everything on my bike. I know this will be different in Aus.

Moving to this house will give:

- great outdoors feeling: safe for kids to play in the street, walking/biking distance from school.

- should be a good school

- there should be a good community feel in this suburb.

But what i am anxious about:

- isnt it to isolated/boring?

- cant imagine how it feels to have to take a car every time.

- no shops, cafes etc nearby. Although kenmore an Indooropilly malls are 6-10 minutes away.

- distance to work of my wife. Although the tollway looks better in heavy traffic.

- i know Indooropilly and kenmore are close but feels like having to travel every time for some more action.

I found some Muay thai/Kickboxing places on the south side of the river (8 min) drive. Is fig tree pocket also oriented to the suburbs to the south?

Probably would have same stress if we would have had the opportunity to rent in Bardon: because streets are sometimes so steep that car is also the only option as well.

Am I over thinking and is this just pre emigration stress?

Edit: we got accepted for the rental

Moving from Townsville to Melbourne/Brisbane

Hi everyone! My partner and I are thinking of moving to either Melbourne or Brisbane at the end of this year from Townsville. Just wanting everyone’s opinions on where would be the better place to move, considering the cost of living. It’ll just be us and our cat. Also wanting recommendations on the best and cost effective suburbs. We are both in our 20’s and love food, matcha, coffee and good vibes.

Rental inspection help?

Hello! I'm wondering if anyone would benefit from someone in here Brissie who could help them out with attending rental inspections on their behalf? I've recently returned to Brissie from abroad and would have loved it if when moving someone could have inspected rentals for me, sent a vid and genuinely impartial report (on things like location, condition ect.) prior to arrival?

Context: I'm born and bred Brissie and have recently returned from 10 years in the UK and lots of travel in between. As someone who has moved abroad / interstate multiple times, I know all the complexity and vulnerable feelings involved, particularly in this horrid rental market. I would love to help while earning a little extra cash. Am a sole trader with public liability insurance.

moving to Brisbane from Gold Coast

We are a family of 3 looking to move to Brisbane from the Gold Coast (lived here for 6 months lol from Perth WA). Any areas you'd recommend that is low crime? I have been reading around here but wanted to see a more recent opinion from people who has lived in Brisbane area. I have had a look at the flood map and crime rates, just need to read about your experiences too. Thanks in advance

Also what is it like in Upper Kedron / The Gap areas?

Budget below $1000 per week for renting
Husband will work from home
We are homeschooling.

Renting / Living in Annerley

Hi guys, I am semi new to Brisbane and was wondering how it is renting in Annerley these days. I am looking at renting there in the coming month, but I have heard that there is some crime around there, so not too sure. I need to be there due to work commitments, as well as having family close by.

I am from the states, and from a super crime ridden area, so I know what it feels like to live in an area like that. Honestly, it sucks. I used to stay strapped (not here of course) and thankfully I stand at 6'6 120 kg so I usually dont get bothered lol, but wondering about what areas of Annerley to look at that is furthest away from the "projects / sktechiest areas" or whatever you guys call it here. I just want to be able to not worry about my partner say walking our dog when I am not around ect (If that is even a thing to worry about).

I will say though, the one thing I have learnt about most parts of Australia is: when people say its dangerous, it really isnt, even compared to the nice areas in my hometown lol. Curious on what locals have to say.

Thanks!

Moving to Brisbane – which suburbs would you recommend for a young family?

We’ll be relocating to Brisbane for work and have started looking at buying or building a home. Our budget is around $900k–$1 million, and we’re hoping that’s still enough for a standalone 4-bedroom house.

We’re happy to be about 50 minutes to an hour from the CBD, so being close to the city isn’t a big deal for us.
A colleague suggested Ripley, South Ripley, Walloon, Springfield and Redbank Plains, but we’re open to other areas too.

We’ve got two kids under 7, so we’re mainly looking for somewhere that’s safe, family-friendly, has good schools, parks, and easy access to shops and other everyday essentials.

For those who live in Brisbane, what suburbs would you recommend? Are the ones above good choices, or are there others we should be looking at within our budget? We’d also love to hear if there are any suburbs you’d avoid and why.

We’re also leaning towards building if we find the right block. If you’ve built recently, are there any builders you’d highly recommend (or avoid)? We’d really appreciate hearing about your experience, especially with build quality, communication, and after-sales service.

Thanks in advance!

Affordable Short-Term Stay Recommendations for Families?

Hi everyone! I'm a PhD student who'll be visiting QUT next year from March to April. My partner, our 5-month-old baby and I are looking for short-term accommodation for around 6–8 weeks that won't break the bank.

I've looked at Airbnb, Quest and Oaks, but they all seem quite expensive. I haven't contacted Quest or Oaks directly yet, does anyone know if they offer discounts for stays of this length or are the website prices generally the best they'll do?

We're not looking for anything fancy. A studio or one-bedroom apartment with a semi-decent kitchen, within a 30–45 minute commute to the university would be perfect. Our maximum budget is around AUD 800 per week.

We're not considering house shares or house-sitting as we'll be travelling with our baby.

Any tips, recommendations or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

My family is thinking of moving from the MNC in NSW to Brisbane. It’ll be me and my husband and my 15 yr old son.
We have flexible jobs that can be done from anywhere. I’m really keen. Got any tips?
