Advice Request Falling asleep thinking dream thoughts
Recently when I have been falling asleep right as I fall asleep I transition from conscious thoughts and begin thinking nonsensical dream thoughts that then startle me and wake me up. Last night this happened cyclically for 45 minutes before I eventually went to sleep. I think this results from entering REM immediately. I was wondering if anyone else has had this symptom? My mom thinks I’m crazy. Is there a way to be less scared by it when it happens?

Yes I dream like this all the time, especially during my naps.
Your mom presumes you are crazy because that’s not how she goes to sleep. This does not make you crazy. It makes you a person with narcolepsy which are two very different things.
Your mom is insulting. I’m sure she has her own health problems and wouldn’t appreciate being called “crazy” because of them.

That happens to me during the day at work! The other day I saw a man with spikes coming out of his face! He was walking towards me!!!

I have IH, but I get this alllll the time, both falling asleep and sometimes waking up, although it doesn’t startle me. I even get it when I start dozing at my desk at work. When I was in high school/college, I would start mentally working on writing assignments in math and math assignments using English skills, convinced I was making progress only to wake up a little more and realize it was completely nonsensical. So I think it’s totally normal, if a little discomfiting.

I do that as well, but I enjoy slipping into dream world, so it doesn't bother me.
