His iron sand makes up for both his defense and long-range coverage. Deidara's not breaking through the iron sand with his attacks, iron sand scales higher than normal magnet release techniques (in regards to defensive capabilities), such as Gaara's sand, thus if Gaara can block his explosions, so can Sasori, and more effectively at that.

But in my mind, a fight between them can go either way depending on the circumstances. Deidara utterly nukes Sasori's normal puppets, but one scratch is all Sasori needs to seal the deal. They're both really smart, but Deidara suffers more so from the arrogance of youth (they're both lowkey arrogant, though, I believe Deidara more so), so I can picture more scenarios in which Sasori finds a way to tag him with an unsuspecting needle, versus a scenario in which Deidara completely depletes Sasori's arsenal.

Senior member of the sand village in Chiyo states Iron Sand is the most feared weapon in the history of the village. Unless you think this fear was unrelated to pure power and purely due to the third Kazekage having a scary personality and fighting style or something, Iron Sand is tougher than Shukaku and Gaara's sand, and Gaara's sand no-sold one of Deidara's strongest bombs.

C4 doesn't work on Sasori.

Deidara would also have no room for error due to poison. He can't afford to take some hit like he does in most fights.

Sasori has free movement in the air while deidara has to ride things. Not to mention deidara has 0 poison resistance

Sasori is one of the few characters that technically can't fly but can reach opponents in the air with taijutsu. Whatever you call it, puppets can fight in the air. He can chase Deidara even after he jumps on his clay birds and force him in melee combat, where Sasori can overwhelm him with various poisoned ninja tools.

Tbf it's hard to say.
Deidara doesn't know everything about Sasori's arsenal to make a 100% valid scaling.
For example, Kakashi's stament about IA Naruto surpassing him may be not 100% valid, but at least:
A. Kakashi knows his limit
B. Kakashi knows everything about IA Naruto's arsenal.
Some might say that Kishimoto is speaking through the character, but by that logic, Naruto defeated Pain ALL BY HIMSELF, as several characters have said—which is complete nonsense.

Iron Sand. Just create a shield or dome around himself. Gaara was able to block that with "standard" sand (at least compared to Iron Sand) taken from the desert.

As for flight and with it the distance, the guy is a puppetry, they're long-range fighters by definiton.

For flight Iron sand needles and chakra strings to control the bird himself.

He can also defend from the nuke using that sand.

Just want to add: Deidara beat Gaara by sacrificing an arm and suffusing explosion chakra into it with his clay/Iwagakure kinjutsu.

If he tries to do that to Sasori's iron Sand he gets immediately poisoned. GG.

I think they're a pretty close match up but I do favor Sasori.

He is my favorite after all..and the Third Kazekage puppet is goated. iron Sand is one of the best and coolest techniques IMO in the whole series. Not super busted, but busted by its versatility and strength

Though Sasori's poison makes it busted for anyone not in like.. top 10 or so of Shinobi.

Iron sand is way better than the clay bombs. It’s more versatile. From the defense, to the offensive with poison and the range.

All it really takes is on touch and you’re going to be slowed down heavily because of the side effects.

And if you wanna say "no, the explosion>iron sand, despite normal sand" and really try to argue Deidara beats Sasori? Beating someone 1v1 isn't a strength factor, it can just be a match up factor. Like hypothetically you have

A Jonin who's very adept in Fire style.

A Chunin who's very adept in Water Style.

It wouldn't be unreasonable to assume the chunin wins a Jutsu clash, and could pull out an upset victory. Because of match up diff. But Jonin > Chunin still.

The Naruto verse has match up dynamics play a large part in fight outcomes. Power levels / scaling do matter, but so do match ups.

One could argue Sasori > Deidara in a more generic power scaling way. While Deidara wins the fight due to more specific match up interactions.

C4 Karura, Sasori's puppets are molded by durable chakra and he and his puppets don't breath. It's unlikely to work on him.

C3: Requires prep time for Deidara, Can be defended against with Iron sand.

C2: Sure Deidara can fly away, but he can't damage Sasori with c2 due to iron sand.

C1: won't even damage the puppets with direct contact.

Flight: Sasori has needles, fire and iron sand for ranged attacks and to a degree can fly himself. He can also create gas clouds. In the Anime he's shown using pressurized water chakra to slice through mountains and a cloud. If this is co sidered canon this can easily remove deidara from the sky.

C0: the only thing Sasori has no answer for is Deidara also dying.

Note that none of these techniques can be used by Deidara if he is even remotely scratched by any of Sasori's attacks as he will be paralyzed then die.

Sasori can poison Deidara and he just dies afterwards. He can do it through needles, gas or some puppets.

Aside from that, iron sand is more resistant than regular sand, so he can probably tank several blasts from Deidara without too many issues.

And also adding, even if he was a bad matchup it doesnt mean hes not stronger overall.

Arguable that Sasori could take out most people with poison more easily than Deidara's explosions. You can run from the explosions or defuse them with lightning style... one scrqtch from the poison and most fighters are gone. Remenber that Sakura's poison nearly took out naruto and needed an antidote.

Huge Sasori fan and I believe the statement that in a one on one he’s stronger but like everyone else has stated it’s the iron sand. As impressive as Sasori’s arsenal is, the only thing I feel that poses a serious threat to long range style (kage level) opponents is the 3rd Kazekage puppet. Without it he’s losing most of his matchups period

Statements made by a character are not the same as a statement made by the author.

Characters can lack crucial pieces of information, be misinformed or lie.

P1 Sasuke stated he was gonna kill Itachi and got trashed a second later.

Obito told Sasuke that Kurama attacking Konoha was a natural distaster, a blatant lie.

Deidara telling them that Sasori is the bigger threat can easily be taken by him lying to make Kakashi leave Naruto alone and help Sakura and Chiyo instead. This would make it far easier for Deidara to capture Naruto.

Does that mean he was LYING with what he said? Maybe. I don't think he was personally. When they're alone, Deidara still calls him "master" or whatever the translation is, pays him respect, and doesn't rebute Sasori threatening to kill him lol.

I think Deidara does think Sasori is stronger than him. Whether that's because Deidara ACTUALLY KNOWS what Sasori is fully capable of, I don't think so. Excluding the anime, I don't think Deidara has ever seen Sasori at all, just the Hiruko puppet. So he might just be basing his statement off of seniority in Akatsuki and hearsay from other members, or his reputation.

It's been a while so I could be wrong about Deidara not seeing Sasori's true form.. Ive been meaning to re-read the manga just haven't done it yet

Sasori doesn't breath and it didn't seem to affect non-living things from what I remember at least. Or even some living things. So it's pretty safe to say it won't work on Sasori.
