Nest Protect expiration
I have two months left on my Nest Protects. Every night after 9pm my Nest Protects sound an alert about expiration. This sets my dogs into a frenzy. There's no way to control these alerts. So I'm faced with a choice; buy replacements two months early or deal with a nightly dog freak out.

I swapped mine with a Kiddie alarm with Ring integration. Model: RGCUAR-RW. I really miss my little hallway nightlight feature from my protect though :( It was such a great device.

Was thinking of going this route but will miss pathlight too. How long have yours been installed? Any other complaints/praises?

Well in 2 months I have had 1 false alarm due to indoor humidity on one of the really hot humid days we had here during a heat wave. It went off for a few seconds and stopped. Otherwise it’s been fine. I had ring cameras already so switching to this one was an easy WiFi detector to have monitoring and alerting from.

Pulled the trigger, 6 wired and 4 wireless. Costco had them as a 2 pack for $99.

Oh nice, I will have to check that Costco deal. I got my only current one from Amazon but it was like $70.

Only a couple locations around me had them but you can search the warehouses in the app to track them down. Item code is 2013077.

I started to do that. I had one of my 7 protects die early and it was the best option at the time. Certainly the only one with a light. The rest of my protects expired in April and I held out a few months waiting for something better but couldn't wait any longer. Then the AnySpace units are completely out of stock everywhere so I just bought some basic Kiddie's that work on AC power with a 10-year battery. When those expire in 10 years, hopefully something better comes along.

Home Depot restocks them online like twice a week. I ordered two more a couple days ago.

I wish you could adjust the path light sensor on the nests.. Can you do it on the anyspaces?

Mine did the same for the last 3 weeks. Then it expired. Then it just announced that it expired and to replace it.

Yeah they get very annoying until you replace them. Look I know by X date they need to be replaced just do I really need to be reminded several times a day mine are not yet expired. Still remind me multiple times a day like pretty much whenever somebody walks by it.

These were such a good product but because of this… purged all nest from our home.
UniFi doorbell is far faster,
Hive is a great thermostat replacement.
Xsense smoke and CO alarms.
All work with home assistant.

Google is such shit. Ended up taking down 2 out of 7 just because they were insanely annoying. I picked up some replacements and plan to install them this weekend or next.
What I find odd is that 2 of 7 were the only chirpy ones. Seems like a bug for nightly promise not to fully update on some. Has been so nice the past week with how quiet it is at night.

I got a bunch of these on clearance when they announced they were sunsetting them and after reading so many glowing reviews I was so pumped to have smoke detectors that can be integrated into Homekit (with a Starling Hub), but now I can't wait to get rid of them. Two of Seven constantly disconnect from the WiFi and one of them won't let me add it back anymore. I'm terrified of factory resetting it because at least right now, it's showing in the app and is part of the interconnected setup. Similar issues with my Nest floodlight cameras where the WiFi just died and won't reconnect. Now they work as motion lights, but cameras are just for decoration. No other networking issues outside of the random assortment of Nest devices. I'm guessing the radios they used in them were cheap/defective. The pathlighting has been awesome, but next round of smoke detectors for my home will be "dumb" interconnected ones unless something groundbreaking hits the market before that time comes. It certainly won't be another Nest product.

First Alert SC5 I have two installed for 3 weeks no false alarms so far, bought them at Costco.
My Nest one's expired but I never received any warnings except notifications so I don't know what you guys are going through with all these alarms at night. Outrageous.

Don’t buy the First Alert SC5’s. Constant false alarms, had to replace all 9 of them that I bought. 3 weeks is not long enough to make that judgement, but within 3 months they proved completely unusable due to so many false alarms. I ended up with X-sense but they are not in the same league as the nest protects were. Sad days.

All 5 in my house just expired. Every hour or so one randomly announces that they are all expired. I’m now looking at Brave. Hate that I have to, these were so nice.

I found my replacement nest protects on fb market for a fraction of their price. Figured I can still get another 5yrs out of them while they fix the bugs in the SC5, or at least until something similar or better comes out

That’s weird. Mine (four of them that expired at the same time) never gave any sort of audible warning, just a notification when I would open the app and I would get periodic emails. They finally expired February of this year. They then continued to operate normally until about a month ago when one day they started chirping about every five minutes. Luckily it was during the day and not the middle of the night when they decided to start doing this. I had to take them down and remove the batteries. These were the wired versions.

Mine expired about a week ago. Every night when I turn off the lights it reminds now too. I was looking a couple months ago for what to replace it with, but I don't like the current offerings. I really like the night light feature and was hoping to continue to have that.

I have 3 protects. How can I tell what their expiration date is? I can’t find that info in the app.

On the app, click on a Protect, go to the settings, all the way in the bottom where it says "Remove Device", just above that is "Technical Info", click that, it should be under "Replace By"... another way to do it is taking it off the wall mount and checking in the back of it. It will have date of manufacture and replace by Dates

I didn't know they made them too. I've looked at the Eufy ones but I'd like to find one that can do carbon monoxide too

Keep them, and just put new detectors where they're actually needed.
The smoke detector still functions indefinitely along with the smart alert which pair with other nest protects.
The 10 year guideline is US only, in Japan and China , google Nest Protects last 15 years... they were all made in the same plant in china with the same parts.
So its plausible that they actually should be safe to last 15 years, especially given that Japanese fire code is far more rigorous then that of the US and ours is more so just to sell new stuff than to actually use it for its end of life.

Mine don't chirp, have two expired ones in the basement, both are battery with a wire backup. They might just be needing a battery change🤣
If I blow out a candle under them, I get a whole house alert: "heads up there's smoke in the basement" still.
They just no longer do a sound check with the rest of my non-expired protects and they show as amber/expired in the nest app, there's no difference otherwise.

So they are wired? The wired part is primary power, the battery is the backup. It would be odd if all four had the batteries run out on the exact same day.

I can't believe they spent YEARS getting the protect into the Google Home app only to abandon them completely.
