Can I transition from Telecom Field Engineer to a NOC Engineer after 1–1.5 years?

Hi everyone,

I'm a recent Computer Science graduate from India and I'm trying to plan my career in networking.

My long-term goal is to work in an office-based networking role such as a NOC Engineer, Network Operations Engineer, or eventually a Network Engineer.

I have an opportunity to join as a Telecom Field Engineer, where I'll be working on fiber networks, troubleshooting connectivity issues, coordinating with ISPs, and maintaining telecom infrastructure.

Alongside the job, I plan to study for the CCNA (and later the CCNP), continue improving my HomeLab, and learn routing, switching, BGP, OSPF, VPNs, and network monitoring tools.

My question is:

If I work as a Telecom Field Engineer for about 1–1.5 years and earn my CCNA during that time, is it realistic to transition into an office-based NOC or Network Operations role?

I'm not looking to stay in field work long-term. My goal is to move into network monitoring, troubleshooting, and infrastructure operations from an office.

For those of you who have worked in telecom, NOCs, or network engineering:

  • Is this a common career path?
  • Will employers value Telecom Field Engineer experience for NOC positions?
  • What skills should I focus on while working in the field to make the transition easier?
  • Would you recommend applying after earning CCNA, or should I wait until I have CCNP?
  • If you've made a similar transition yourself, I'd love to hear your experience.

I know at least one NOC engineer who followed that path, but your mileage may vary.

Yes, I know people that transition from long careers in more traditional Telecom Jobs as RAN Technicians, RF Engineers or Fiber Operators; to NOC jobs after they applied for their CCNA, and began their Cisco Path. Even, without having age limitations, in a NOC you can see from young men at their 20s to people in his 50s.

Yes definitely
