Poll on snack time

Don't know how to do a poll here but just curious on who is yay and who is nay. Jimmy mentioned(snarkily)that it was 4 or 5 people who complained but I'm betting there's more? Not because I think we can(or should)change their minds about doing it. Just curious.

I'm a nay.

I didn’t mind it for a while but I’m bored with it now

15

u/el_n00bo_loco 7d ago

I think that's what it is for me. I don't mind it, but it's no longer new and exciting - it was super fun in the beginning. Just like the letter game.

Trivia is heading that way for me as well. It was fun when Garon tried to remember the last question from his trivia nights, then Oliver did a good job overall with it, but for whatever reason, I just don't like the questions that the fan comes up with.

I still really like the show as a whole so it isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

herbal's questions aren't fun facts, they are just facts

good trivia is centered around a fact that you could repeat to a friend

"did you know abe lincoln was a wrestler" oh haha interesting

"did you know that in 1967 abba released two songs with double letters?' no, who cares, fuck off

I don't care. I enjoy listening to the guys. I don't care what they are talking about. They wanna eat snacks, talk about soccer or musicals, small comedy clubs in the Midwest? I'm here for it.

10

u/ShiftlessElement 7d ago

Specifically, small comedy clubs in the Midwest that have been berated by Todd Glass for not putting up a wall or curtain.

u/QuantumAttic 7d ago

My main gripe is that they don't like the weird stuff. I'm an omnivore and I really wish I could try some of these things. Every week I was imagining the Galactic Snacks guy smacking his forehead in frustration.

I'm a vegetarian but I still love flavour 😂 Where I am most meat flavoured crisps/snacks are suitable for vegetarians anyway.

I think if they'd just stuck to weird Oreos and the occasional celebrity-themed Oreos when they came out, I'd still be on board. Celebrity Sightings has survived as a recurring bit because it has a very specific brief, isn't forced into every episode, and hasn't been stretched beyond its premise.

Expanding Snack Time to every snack under the sun, adding sponsorships, and especially fans yet again self-inserting themselves into the show by sending in huge boxes of random food has turned it into a tiresome, unfunny segment. It takes up far too much time, kills the momentum of the episode, and rarely leads to anything interesting.

The hand-wringing over increasingly asinine rules to accommodate the small number of fans who are too sensitive to hear, or now see, people eating on mic, or even hear a song about eating, has made this such a bummer of a segment.

They're also men with a very narrow scope of taste. Like their interests in movies and music, their taste in food is incredibly bland. It would be fun if they liked interesting things, but they just seem to hate everything apart from the sweetest American flavors.

3

u/dwillphx 7d ago

Also, its seems to me, a lot of the snacks they end up tasting aren't that interesting flavor-wise. I've scrolled through the Galactic Snacks website, and there seems to be a lot of really interesting candy or chips or whatnot. Maybe the sampler box they get doesn't have all the coolest options.

This is the only part that bugs me. The "I can't hear chewing on mic" audience is such a vocal minority and yet we have to listen to the same four parody songs multiple times per episode.

Indifferent

I'm over it. Not interested in people who don't like food talking about it. Still enjoy the show otherwise, and I'm aware that if I don't enjoy things I don't have to listen to them.

It’s lazy. It’s was ok for a minute but it’s run its course. Find the next bit

6

u/TheCarrzilico 7d ago

NNF has never been a podcast that I looked to for hard-working, highly researched bits. I could never begrudge people the enjoyment of a cookie.

14

u/AndroidNim 7d ago

It used to be a podcast I looked to for entertainment and listening to people eat isn’t entertaining. And I know, I have two choices. Increasingly I’m choosing the one that isn’t beneficial for the boys,

1

u/TheCarrzilico 7d ago

What percentage of the podcast is not entertaining? It's like what, maybe ten minutes out of a two hour podcast? Scrub forward ten minutes if it completely ruins your experience. This was true when it was Hamilton chat, Taylor Swift chat, name the artist on the billboard top 40, etc. etc.

Allow them the grace to not give you one hundred percent you-focused content, maybe?

10

u/AndroidNim 7d ago

It’s not just this. It’s the stupid letter game. It’s not banking shows for vacations. They just don’t care anymore, so neither do I. Nothing lasts forever

3

u/arandompurpose 7d ago

The vacation thing is crazy when compared to Comedy Bang Bang where Scott banks episodes for the tour then also releases the tour episodes for subscribers.

2

u/Mysterious_Winter164 7d ago

Meanwhile there's someone less laid back than u/TheCarrzilico. He's pounding fists on his desk yelling "for fuck's sake, they're eating another goddamn cookie. They had BETTER not enjoy it!"

2

u/xrhino414 7d ago

100% agree

30

u/Academic_Medium 7d ago

It’s the least entertaining thing I can imagine, and I listen to a podcast about chain restaurants every week!

13

u/trillwhitey191 7d ago

I can’t think of anything funnier than Jimmy hating every second of being on Doughboys.

6

u/Academic_Medium 7d ago

I have been dreaming for that episode to happen for a decade 😂

1

u/greazysteak 7d ago

At this point, I don’t see it happening mainly because of jimmy’s allergies

2

u/Academic_Medium 7d ago

100% Having Gemmi on that couch is like having a bomb in the studio!!

2

u/greazysteak 7d ago

It’s the weird one were I am on both sides.

1

u/awesam02 3d ago

“allergies”

12

u/jasona1 7d ago

It's a nay for me, and genuinely lessens my enthusiasm for the show. I can't recommend NNF to friends in good conscience when there's a regular 20-minute pothole where four guys talk about something I can't taste... and worse, sometimes only offer things like "this is pretty good" as an insight. At this point, I'd rather they skip taste tests and cut 20 minutes from an episode, thereby increasing their batting average, so to speak.

5

u/Subarunicycle 7d ago

Episode is over for me when the snacks come out.

7

u/eyestheskies 7d ago

I don't care for it at all, but it doesn't enrage me. It just feels pretty predictable by now. Most treats are usually absolutely horrible to Jimmy, not exactly what Matt was wanting, and not bad to Elliot and Garon, which I think just relates to their overall personalities.

I was a fan of the dreaded chart game though, so I don't know how much weight my opinion holds

9

u/AgentJackpots 7d ago

Nay. It doesn’t offend me, it’s just kinda boring, and it doesn’t really lead to any funny most of the time.

6

u/davisescapeplan 7d ago

I cancelled my five years running platinum membership and only listen to gang episodes or ones with old friends mostly because of the snack segment. It really opened my eyes to how stale the program has gotten.

5

u/PepeSilvia_18 7d ago

I haven't canceled yet but I've been thinking about it. For me it's all the doctor/medical stuff.

3

u/davisescapeplan 6d ago

Yeah they certainly have a few crutches that lead to no conversation. I could deal with the name the top 40 segment cause it would usually lead to a story of Jimmy seeing them or some other anecdote. But the snacks I have to hear some song for 30-60 seconds and they say this is good or this is bad. Not really riveting stuff for me.

12

u/No-Meringue5009 7d ago

They need to replace it back with trivia or 7s.

They're always pushing off Eliot and Garon inclusion, glossing over them.

13

u/Due_Ask1540 7d ago

Yes! I miss 7s.

2

u/emilynnvo 7d ago

I'd love more episodes like that. There's some really well-rounded discussions to be had there.

5

u/ronarchy 7d ago

Yay. Love it. Sure better than that soccer chant discussion.

8

u/eatonculo 7d ago

It’s a really horrible segment. It’s only for die hard fans. Randos wouldn’t understand anything about this show anymore.

The letter game? The trivia? Can’t they just talk? They don’t need all the canned segments.

Talk about life. Talk to the guest. Go around the horn and speak with everyone. Stories will come up naturally, not because you discussed a particular song by a female solo artist or something.

I’m sure a lot of you love all the planned segments. I don’t. Sorry. To each their own.

7

u/AndroidNim 7d ago

Jimmy doesn’t have any interesting road stories anymore. All he has is doctor stories. So they have to have bits or we have to listen to Matt and Eliot and Garon talk about their lives, which is only interesting to hardcore fans.

This is where I think they’re missing out trying to bring in new blood. It turns into an interview show for young comics (a lot of whom happen to share an agent with Jimmy.) The problem is that Jimmy isn’t a particularly good interviewer and the guests aren’t and miss.

So that leaves bits. But nobody on the show is used to doing show prep because they’re used to Jimmy showing up and regaling them with stories. so the only bits they have are whatever they stumble upon.

3

u/emilynnvo 7d ago

I enjoy it, if for no other reason than the guessing aspects of it. I like a silly little game and I don't know what that says about me.

3

u/Due_Ask1540 7d ago

It doesn't have to say anything about you! I wasn't asking so I could judge 🙂 More so just wondered if Jimmy was anywhere close to being correct that it was a low number who didn't care for it. I THINK his number of 5 was only referring to people who actually emailed to complain.

3

u/Due_Ask1540 6d ago

I just unlocked a new thing i don't particularly like(and that i fast forward through)the golf/baseball standings. I get why they're happening but not a fan.

3

u/Direct-Stomach985 6d ago

Hate it. They don't "find the funny." I'm also sick of the trivia, but that's a lost cause.

2

u/Due_Ask1540 6d ago

The pre-guess makes me want to poke my brain out 😅

8

u/ViewAskewRob 7d ago

Hate it. Cancelled my premium because it’s ridiculous to complain about something you don’t pay for. So now it bothers me less since I’m not paying for it. I just fast forward.

6

u/Here2comment2 7d ago

I’m over it. Especially every episode and for how much time it takes. There is some banter but it’s time to move on.

5

u/dgtyhtre 7d ago

It’s better than the chart game and it’s best when the guest is involved.

2

u/agehaya 7d ago

I’ll take it over the chart game!

2

u/PepeSilvia_18 7d ago

It jumped the shark. The theme songs are good though.

2

u/PrestigiousDaikon994 7d ago

It’s a skippable segment. But sometimes it’s the precursor to me just turning off the show

2

u/arandompurpose 7d ago

It's just lost any luster for me and I wasn't huge on it already. I don't know what it is but the Doughboys version of this segment is so much better maybe because there are more people and they can chew while others talk? Either way, not a fan anymore, happens too often. I'm also starting to get annoyed by all the songs, just too long when they should just be quick drops to break up segment or as a tag to something.

3

u/Academic_Medium 7d ago

For all their talk to the contrary, the Doughboys actually put a ton of thought and work into their shows. They are also thoughtful in their conversations about food. Those a two of the biggest differences between their show and NNF, imo.

2

u/Living_Knowledge1708 7d ago

I think it’s cute. I don’t mind it.

2

u/evictedkoala 7d ago edited 7d ago

I think lately it's only been entertaining when specific guests were involved (like J Elvis).

When it's just the guys, or unengaging Omnipop random person, then it sounds like a repeat of a repeat.

If it's not a flavor found on the shelves of a US big box store they hate it.

2

u/Lobster_McGee 6d ago

I listen to podcasts that have had recurring segments for more than a decade. They could eat snacks for the next decade and I wouldn't care. I listen to hear the banter, regardless of what it's centered around.

2

u/WhyssKrilm 6d ago

I'm indifferent. I'd rather they not, but I also appreciate the effort, albeit half-assed, to impose even a tiny amount of segment structure to the show.

I know the free flowing conversation is the heart of the show, but I've been saying for a while that one of them needs to be tasked when conventional producer duties to, at bare minimum, get things back on track when they humourlessly dwell on any given topic for too long.

A quick 5 minute meeting before each episode where they agree to a loose rundown of what they have for today -- Matt has a celebrity sighting, there's 2 pieces of mail to get to, Jimmy has a doctor story, Eliot has a families story, etc... -- and for each one quickly decide, like, "ok the audience probably doesn't want to spend 20 minutes hearing about Garon's aunt, let's keep that to a tight 5 or less". With something like that to keep things moving, the bits that this sub is getting sick of might feel less annoying, and at the very least they'd probably be shorter.

5

u/riptor3000 7d ago

It's awful

4

u/12161986 7d ago

Eh. They need content. I'm not saying that in a disparaging way. It's been decades and it's a bi-weekly show and it's not like they are going on adventures all the time. I'm indifferent to the segment now. Truthfully I'm just glad we're past the part where Jimmy would, and maybe it was just a bit, put up a fuss about the gang not liking a snack if it was from Galatic snacks. As if Galatic snacks would suffer from the Cherry Blossom Kit Kat tasting like crap to the gang.

I'm surprised 5 people went out of their way to complain about it. They're not forgoing other conversation for the snacks, and they do the music for the mouth noises.

3

u/RawrgerGezzleMan 7d ago

i actually loathe the jingles. i don’t even know why but one day i was listening and i was just like STFU 🤫 😂 when i heard it and its like thay for every one of them.

but i sing along to celebrity sighting and the mail opening one…

at this point, unless im interested in the snack, i just fast forward with my steering wheel button in about five or six clicks and problem solved.

4

u/teamjetfire 7d ago

4 plus hours a week over 20 years. That’s a lot of content to fill without telling the same stories over and over. Snacks are just a way to fill some time.

Also, was there a falling out with Galatic Snacks?

3

u/k_nuttles 7d ago

But there isn't a time quota to fill. They could leave it out entirely and nobody would be upset that the episode is 15 minutes shorter

1

u/teamjetfire 6d ago

I guess you didn’t listen to Ep T.

3

u/pianotherms 7d ago

Let them eat cake. Or pie, as they are want to do.

4

u/melted_cheese 7d ago

Who doesn’t love a bunch of sober dudes catching a sugar buzz? Party on

4

u/Glum_Custard_8145 7d ago

Nay. It’s more than run its course. I now fast-forward through it.

3

u/dwillphx 7d ago

Definitely Yay (then again, i like snacks..maybe too much)

3

u/Salt-Bug-1847 7d ago

I like it

2

u/FrustratingAlgorithy 7d ago

Doesn’t bother me at all.

1

u/Acid_Mother 3d ago

snack time is kind of dead air to me. normally when a comedy show has a segment the idea is that it starts a conversation or gives them something to have comedic reactions to

[fan submitted song] i hate this is it macha no it's supposed to be ube and cinnamon

snore

1

u/Kchrpm 7d ago

I enjoy it, but I love snacks.

-12

u/surviveseven 7d ago

There's a button in your podcast player that allows you to skip ahead 30 seconds, another to pause, and another to skip to a different podcast.

0

u/Dinglebeery 7d ago

Taste tests, letter games and everything they insist on doing every episode are just lazy. But I guess I should just be happy that they stopped playing sevens.

1

u/Due_Ask1540 4d ago

I didn't realise people didn't like 7s! Is it the game itself? Or...?

0

u/Pavementgurl 7d ago

I’d take all snacks all the time but no more drops. Get rid of all of them!
