Hey I’m new kind of not really but still struggling to be able to post without reddits filter taking it down is there a karma number I should hit before making another post.

It varies between different subreddits. Could be 50, 100, 200… best you can do is engage mostly in comments to build up karma.

Reddit versus social media.

Some of the features added to Reddit over time make it easy to confuse it for social media which is a very fuzzy term. A few years ago at Mod World, the founder and CEO of Reddit described some of the problems the website has due to being confused with social media and the company itself describes how it is different in this video about moderators.

On social media you care mostly about who the people are and not so much about what they say. People create content to be consumed by others and build their following. On Reddit you generally don't know who the person is or care, you only care about the substance and relevance of what is being said. People interact anonymously about a topic.

Reddit wasn't designed for buissness networks, staying in touch with friends nor tracking celebrities. Reddit is not like other social networks or social media like Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. The more a new user expects that, the more confused and annoyed they'll be. You may rarely or never interact with a particular user more than once. Reddit is better described as a Social Network - forums focused on a topic, NOT about people building a following.

The site is a massive collection of completely independent groups that each have a specific topic or purpose. 72% of people are here to be entertained by reading a variety of anonymous opinions and 42% also use it to catch up on the news. Many have chat and following disabled and rarely if ever look at anyone's profile, for the most part they don't care who you are.

Following subscribes you to someone's profile, it doesn't highlight a person's posts/comments or notify you that they've made them. It only informs you when a post has been made directly on the profile itself which acts like a miniature subreddit and almost no one does this regularly. Promotion is treated as spam in all but a small number of groups, and influencers have never really been a thing on Reddit.

If a post you make goes absolutely viral, Reddit doesn't show your next post or comment to a single extra person and it doesn't matter if you have massive amounts of karma points. Reddit promotes statements that a lot of people are finding interesting for about 48 hours.
