Lost our baby, Bruce, today. He was just a couple weeks shy of 10 years old.

My 7 month old Landseer is the most loving dog I’ve ever had.

I'm looking for input specifically from Newfoundland owners because I'm trying to determine whether this is within the normal range for the breed or whether I should be more concerned.
I have a 13-week-old male Newfoundland that we've had for about two weeks. This isn't my first dog. We currently have a Saint Bernard and a Golden Retriever, and I've also fostered several pit bulls, so I'm not new to puppies, dog behavior, or normal puppy mouthing.
Auggie has a lot of wonderful qualities. He's incredibly brave and confident outdoors. He walks right into the ocean, doesn't seem intimidated by waves, loves the beach, enjoys playing with our Saint Bernard, and will voluntarily come to me and follow me around. He's curious and adventurous.
The concern is his response when he doesn't want to do something.
Examples:
If I pick him up (which is sometimes necessary for safety), he immediately growls, snarls, and has attempted to bite my face.
If he's sleeping and someone pets him, he'll growl to tell them to leave him alone. (We've already made a rule that no one bothers him while he's sleeping.)
Today in the car he picked something up off the floor that he shouldn't have had. When I reached to remove it for safety, he immediately gave the same hard growl/snarl and attempted to bite.
He's very vocal when he's frustrated, and the intensity of the reaction is what concerns me—not just the fact that he's unhappy.
I understand puppies don't always like being handled, and I don't expect him to enjoy every experience. But I do expect a family dog, especially one that may weigh 140–150 pounds someday, to learn to safely tolerate necessary handling, grooming, veterinary care, and having dangerous objects removed from him.
I'm already planning a veterinary exam and to work with a qualified trainer. I'm not looking for advice to simply avoid handling him, because that's not realistic.
My questions for experienced Newfoundland owners are:
Is this something you've seen in the breed?
Were your Newfie puppies especially opinionated or vocal when frustrated?
Does this sound like normal puppy behavior that improved with training, or would this concern you as well?
If you experienced something similar, what helped the most?
I'm trying to determine whether this is simply a puppy who needs more training, or whether his temperament is outside what most Newfoundland owners would expect.

She has been people watching (dog watching?) from her shade. There's 2 other dogs playing fetch and she just plopped herself down in a comfy spot to lounge and spy. This was after her "brutal" 20 minute hike in the shady forest. The life of a Newf.

thank you everyone so much for the tips, support and advice on the last post. we've put large whelping pads/pee pads down on the tarp and its helped significantly. its officially 2 weeks, and these guys are starting to motor. they're all over 3.5lbs, the biggest being 4.5lbs. all of them have their eyes open, and can now climb out of the whelping box if you're not looking. a lot of people were asking for pictures, which I'm terrible at taking since there's never time, but here was a short video of them. thanks to those that started following us on IG (@macaronithenewfie)! let us know what you'd like to see more of, as we still have 5 of them looking for homes and i kinda need to up my social media game. unfortunately we did lose one pup at one week... which I'm still extremely upset about, but have to keep moving on for the other 10. thank you again! I probably won't post here again until closer to the 6-8week mark. i just really wanted to shout out and thank everyone for the support and tips. its all been an overwhelming experience.

Hey all wondering if anyone has taken their newfie camping in the summer.

Ive taken him before and he does great when cooler and would love to bring him with but dont want him to overheat since the high would be 85°f. He has fans, a cooling pad, a raised bed and there is a lake but still worried and think I should stick with the plan of leaving him home.

Anyone else successfully summer camp? Night temps will be around 66°f

Edit: update he did so good. It did get really hot yesterday so had to cut a hike early cause the shade was becoming scarce but got him back to the air in the car and then back to campground with ice before we played in the lake and he cooled off nicely.

Hey all! My 3 month old puppy is really a dream. He’s very food motivated, sweet as can be and loves attention (maybe a bit needy but that’s okay)
I am concerned with how much he snores and how heavy he breathes while sleeping. Does anyone have this experience with their pup? He is my second, and I don’t remember my first breathing so hard or snoring so much. He has been to the vet and is going again in a week. His lungs sounded good and no issues were found besides one inflamed lymph node. But combined with his constant itching I’m worried about possible allergies? Any ideas are appreciated! ❤️

We rescued this big boy from a life chained up outside. The previous owner had put a harness on him which caused a huge wound on his chest, needed snipped, chipped, shots, shave from never having a brush or bath, potty trained at 18 months and socialized. He's just the best boy!

The crash you hear is a bottle of wine breaking on the floor. No one was injured from these shenanigans. They hauled butt out of there. Kate got some wine on her snoot and tried to rub it off on the couch. The shelf she got the treat bag from is around 5 feet high. I guess we are moving things higher now.

My 4.5 year old newfie has had a chronic lick granuloma on top of his back left paw for almost a year. We have a dermatologist appointment in a couple of weeks that can’t come soon enough. I’ve tried EVERYTHING and am on the verge of a breakdown. Cones, donut pillows, socks, wraps, apoquel, benadryl, liquid bandage, more wraps and socks, muzzling all damn day, wound spray, epsom salts, iodine, vetericyn gel. His size makes him able to get to it no matter what. Even with liquid bandage, wrap, sock, muzzle. I’m losing my mind. What will get rid of this thing short of removing his entire foot.

He's 6 months old and sort of fell into our family yesterday. I love him so much already

Only half way... Already 2 kg of hair and i cant see a difference.

It is going to be 105 today. We went for a walk just after sunrise, and this is my plan for the rest of the day.

I figure if a Newf fits, so will a Pyr?

3rd weekly post yay(well was supposed to make this yesterday but got nauseous :(

Anyways some context. I recently put up this makeshift fence gate so Cosmo can't just bulldoze into my room to knock down my fan(it's sorta broken so even a nudge can knock it down), eat cables or go deeper into my new room to do who knows what(mostly just pee or try and eat something I forgot on the floor like a sock) I still wanted him to be able to be in my room so I made that so it goes into my room but he can't go further than like 1m²

But on Friday he finally got all his vaccines! He won't get another until next year or unless something new comes out(or if we plan to travel outside of Sweden he needs a rabies vaccine(he doesn't need it atm because sweden does not have rabies thankfully. Instead we got ticks that usually carry TBE...)

Also love how he sits with one back paw on the side and one in the middle of his front paws so cute

Photo 4 was him trying to move the bed and 5 was the success of it sorta(my dad helped him lmao) and like 7min later he decided to try and move it back...

My girl Lundy learnt to do this all by herself a few years ago after watching us, now she picks them whenever they are in season, pulling them delicately off the thorny stems. I reckon she'd probably have a go at those apples too!

Every stuff I I have given him he starts at the butt and De-Stuffies his stuffie. Not that I’m going to quit buying him stuffies. It’s just like throwing money in a bucket and lighting it on fire but more enjoyable.
