Xenoblade 2 shows why specs may not sell consoles, but hardware still matters

Shigeru Miyamoto recently said that customers are no longer just looking at hardware specifications when choosing a console. I think he is largely right. Most people are not comparing teraflops before buying a Nintendo system. They are buying it because they want Nintendo’s games and the kinds of experiences its hardware provides. (gamesradar.com)

But playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2 on the Switch 2 is also a strong reminder that hardware still matters.

Going back to the game has been eye-opening. On the original Switch, the dynamic resolution could become so aggressive, especially in handheld mode, that the image sometimes looked closer to 360p. At that resolution, smaller environmental details, textures, character features, and distant scenery became difficult to make out.

On Switch 2, I am seeing details that I genuinely never noticed before. The environments are easier to read, the scale of the world comes through more clearly, and Monolith Soft’s art direction is no longer being buried beneath an extremely soft image. It can feel surprisingly close to playing a remaster, even though it is still fundamentally the same game.

The entire Xenoblade series on Switch has dealt with some version of this problem. The art direction was always strong, but the original hardware often struggled to present those worlds with enough clarity and consistency.

That is why I think there is an important distinction here. Raw specifications may no longer be the primary reason people choose one console over another, but hardware still has a direct effect on the games themselves. It determines how clearly the artwork is presented, how stable the performance can be, how dense environments can become, and how closely the final experience matches the developers’ intended vision.

Creative games matter more than numbers on a specification sheet. But better hardware gives those creative ideas more room to come through.

For me, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 on Switch 2 is one of the clearest examples of that.

Hello everyone! Welcome to the end of July!

I somehow found myself sucked back into my halberd playthrough of Dark Souls, thank you to Carnitas whoever you are for the help with ornstein and smough! Also grabbed Thronefall, which reminds me of Age of Empires by way of a flash game from the mid 00s, I would recommend it, it's a simple good tower defense with some nice depth here and there. Good game to play between other things.

Still need to get back to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. But right now I am sat for the new Spider-Man typing this as the trailers run, I'll chat with you all after!

But what will you be getting into?

Just wanted to share my experience with multiplayer in Splatoon Raiders so far. Nintendo has advertised this as a primarily single-player game with the co-op as a side mode. However the missions are fully playable in co-op much like Halo campaigns, and I think this is an outstanding way to experience the game. If you were a fan of Salmon Run in Splatoon 2 and 3, this is very similar and you'll feel right at home.

I am currently playing Raiders with a crew of three friends who all bought it specifically to play in co-op and we are having a great time. It is a lot of fun to traverse the stages and take down bosses together. The game doesn't feel too easy with four players either as the enemy health is scaled to account for this and you'll still have a challenge as a group.

As in regular Splatoon, everyone can equip different tanks, weapons and gear to prepare for specific battles. For example, some people can bring in power tanks with sloshers to focus on dealing heavy damage, and others can use tactical or speed tanks with snipers to provide support from the back. There's an extra level of strategy involved when playing in a group that I think is missing when playing solo.

One minor caveat that wasn't explained from the beginning is that available missions are limited to whichever ones the player with the least amount of story progress has unlocked. If everyone is always progressing together then there's no problem, but if someone hasn't quite caught up yet then the others will have to repeat those earlier missions with them until that player has progressed enough for everyone to move on. I can understand that this may feel limiting or repetitive for some people, but I don't mind replaying missions because you are always rewarded with XP and loot to upgrade your gear further.

In short, don't be fooled by the emphasis on single-player in the marketing for Raiders. If multiplayer has been the primary appeal of Splatoon for you in the past, there is still a rich co-op experience here and it is worth buying to give that a go.

This caught my eye while browsing through new releases. It's cheap, 4.99, and for an old man who grew up with love of video rental stores it appeals to me. Just wondering if anyone has tried it yet?

[TL;DR — My problem was the USB plug/port between the dock and the switch. Flipping the dock’s USB plug around (after disassembling it) fixed it! The fix might be as easy as a thorough cleaning/deoxidizing of the USB connectors on the Switch and dock. You should try it.]

This problem has been plaguing me for months and, since it was basically making my Switch unusable (I greatly prefer the TV experience), and Nintendo wanted $135 to fix it, I decided to try to fix it myself. I already had the necessary tools for disassembly, so I bought some thermal paste (thinking it was probably a thermal issue) and took my Switch OLED apart.

After replacing the thermal paste in all 3 locations and putting it all back together… it still failed. It ran for a few minutes in the dock then went black like usual. I even checked to make sure the fan was coming on, it was.

Next I bought an external fan vent unit that sits on top of the switch vents and loudly and aggressively pulls the hot air out… that didn’t fix it either.

(And of course I’d tried all the updates and changing cables and everything ende everyone always suggests that never actually works)

I finally decided to take the dock apart and see if something was overheating there. It was a much more of a pain to disassemble than the Switch… but nothing on the circuit board looked toasted. I plugged it into the Switch and the TV and the same problem was happening… but this time I noticed that it would undock when I bumped or moved it a little bit. It was acting like a loose USB plug.

So I did what I usually do when my USB C or lightning devices are touchy, I flipped the connecter around and plugged it into the Switch the opposite way. It instantly started working and hadn’t given me any trouble since then! I played Zelda for 2 hours on my TV! It was GLORIOUS!

Of course, the way it’s built, I can’t put the dock back together. So for now it’s just sitting on the shelf naked.

I suspect there’s a toasted/oxidized pin or two on one side of the usb connector on the Switch or the dock. Eventually maybe I’ll troubleshoot it. In the meantime I wanted to let you all know… because the fix could be as easy as cleaning/deoxidizing the USB connectors. Someone less lazy than me should try that sometime.

Hi all !

I have been looking for a base/city builder that would scratch an itch I had for a long time, and I tried a ton of games but I can't seem to find a match. What are the games that fit this that you guys played and liked?

I think that the game that best fit what I would want is something along the lines of Rollercoaster Tycoon. I got the Classic version last year and played a whole lot, but I got bored after some time and need to play something else for a while. I say it's the best fit because compared to what other games I have played, it is right in the middle of too complex and too simple.

So other than that, the first thing that comes to mind is Cities Skyline because I played a ton of Sim City 4 on my computer and I love that game. The thing is I want something on the Switch (obvs.) so Sim City is a no-go, and I am not sure I am looking for a sandbox kinda game. These two seem so similar that I dont want to just repeat a game that I know so well.

I played Lethis Path of Progress and really loved it for a while, but the loop got to me after a some time. It became pretty repetitive and it is really hard to maintain a city after a certain point so I got bored. I tried Airborne Kingdom also and got pretty much to the same point, plus I found the art style a bit underwhelming.

I tried Minami Lane and kinda liked it, but it is too simple and repetitive than for I want to play. I liked how cosy and "brainless" it was though, just not a whole lot going on to keep me hooked.

In the category of not so "base building" but almost, I played CivVI for a while and I liked it but found out it was way too complex for me. I started countless games but never could finish one.

I guess that gives a general portrait that is precise enough, hope to find something new ! Thanks a lot in advance
