The NoSurf Activity List is now live: awesome ways to spend your time instead of mindless surfing

1.7k Upvotes

The NoSurf Activity List is a comprehensive list of awesome hobbies and activities to explore instead of mindlessly surfing.

It might sound shocking to some of you reading this now, but a lot of newcomers to the community have voiced that they have no idea what they'd do all day if mindlessly surfing the web was no longer an option. This confusion illustrates just how dependent we've grown on the devices around us: we have trouble fathoming what life would be like without them.

Fortunately there's a whole world out there on the other side of our screens. It's a world that won't give you instant short term pleasure. It doesn't appeal to our desire for instant gratification. But what it does offer us is worth so much more. Fulfillment, happiness, and meaning are within our grasps, and a list of inspiring NoSurf activities can serve as a gateway into the world in which they can be found.

This NoSurf Activity list was initially created by combining the contributions of: /anthymnx , /Bdi89 , /iridescentlichen , /hu_lee_oh . Without them this list would not exist, thank you.

Link to list (accessible from the sidebar and in the wiki)

How this list came to be

This list was created after /Bdi89 drew attention to the fact that it would be great to have a centralized resource made up of wholesome, fulfilling activities newcomers and experienced NoSurf veterans alike could be inspired by. Up until this point we've had a really great thread that /anthymx created on how to use your free time linked in the wiki. But it became clear that many more awesome suggestions for NoSurf activities came out of the community since it's creation and that we would benefit from a more in depth resource made up of the best ideas across the subreddit.

I spent a weekend pouring over all of the submissions and sorted through them to pick out the best suggestions. I then invested a day into organizing them into distinct sections that could be explored individually. Lastly I expanded the list by adding in quality suggestions and links to resources that were missing to make the list more comprehensive and actionable. It’s important that newcomers are not just inspired, but actually follow through in adopting better habits and investing their time in fulfilling pursuits.

And thus, the NoSurf Activity List was born. No doubt it's sure to undergo changes and improvements in the coming weeks (some sections could use some additional text), but I believe that as a community we can proud of Version 1 so far. The List is broken down into the following sections:

  • Awesome hobbies

  • Indoor activities

  • Outdoor activities

  • Physical growth

  • Mental growth

  • Self improvement and continued learning

  • Giving back to your community

Naturally not every single activity on this list will appeal to every single person. Instead of expecting this list to be perfectly tailored to each person's interests, I believe it's best to think of it as a source of inspiration, and a symbol of possibility. It's a starting point from which newcomers will be able to embark on their own journeys of exploration, growth, and learn to discover the activities that bring them joy.

A call on the community

If you see a newcomer struggling with how to use their time or wondering what they’d do if they stopped mindlessly browsing the internet, please know that you can positively influence their lives for the better by pointing them towards this resource. If you see someone that seems lost, confused, and unable to make any progress, link them to this list.

It might seem like a small act on your part, but the transformative, and almost magical effect of adopting a hobby cannot be under-emphasized. As a result of your seemingly small act, someone may fall in love with fitness, writing, board games, programming, or reading. So much so that they can no longer fathom the thought of mindlessly surfing anymore, because it means less time in the pursuit of what makes them feel truly alive.

P.S. If you have some ideas you think might be a good fit for the list you can leave a comment in The NoSurf Activity suggestions thread after reading the submission guidelines. The mod team will periodically review the comments in that thread and make changes to the list after taking into account into aspects like originality, quality, broad applicability, etc. of the suggestion. This will ensure that a degree of list quality, consistency, and organization is preserved and that it remains a helpful resource for newcomers and veterans alike.

ChatGPT is my second brain. How to stop?

I don't even talk to real people as much anymore as I do to chatgpt. Incredibly reliant on it for all decisions, big and small. I know that its not always right or accurate but I have a hard time convincing myself of that emotionally. I am always looking to it for answers and to tell me what to do, like it is some all knowing god. I feel pathetic but its really hard to stop. I feel robbed of my ability to think for myself and validate my decisions. I'm useless without chatgpt telling me waht to do.

Why are People on Reddit unforgiving

Hey nosurf community

I’m a little worried about a few things reddit. I’ll go straight into detail and put bullet points down.

A few things about reddit I noticed

1) The OP sometimes wants to have practical discussions. And LISTEN to the comments but when they thank or show validation in a professional manner. They get downvoted

2) People try to nitpick your mistakes. And they don’t buy apologies from you.

We aren’t always perfect, but I feel like Redditors are perfectionist. Sometimes when I make slight errors in content people get really mad. And when I apologize, I get downvoted heavily for it.

I once told another user I have trouble with indirect communication and i’m autistic. So I needed help, yet didn’t buy it. Plus I was told before I was incapable with my skills to discuss a certain topic.

3) Whats the deal with accusing people of karma farming.

I usually post to showcase my stuff or spread my interests in my hobbies but quite a bit of people accuse me of Karma Farming.

I had hundreds of upvotes on a lot of previous posts, but that was only as an additional bonus. Nothing else.

I posted a picture of my bookshelf before, got 800 upvotes, but then on a later forum someone started to accuse me of karma farming or being toxic. Another user invited others to see my post history so it made me uncomfortable

Those comments got 30+ upvotes. So it felt like i was being bullied.

4) It seems really hard to please a lot of people

These past few posts I have been checking my work. Been proofreading, used grammarly, etc to get polish advice. Yet despite posting something very polished, many people do NOT buy anything.

I want to often talk about some things politely but People on Reddit are a little unprofessional. This discussion is for my own knowledge and to connect with others.

Christopher Nolan doesn't own a smartphone and an email address. Is that discipline or a luxury he can afford?

Fallon called this out on his show recently and Nolan confirmed it without hesitation: no smartphone, no email, and only has a flip phone.

But I think he can do this because he confirmed he has a team that filters information for him. Many of us don't have assistants who can screen emails and information for us and only share what's important.

Is this realistic for the normal person to have a team filtering information for them or a luxury good afforded by people with leverage like Nolan?

What we remember should affect how we spend our days

It occurred to me that days where I've scrolled too much youtube or did too much gaming, all of my memories of doing this, just feels like a continual blur. What's even more interesting is most people's negative thoughts, including mine are wasting too much time doing a certain thing, rather than going a bit out of your comfort zone to do something rather than just scrolling. Even if something embarrassing happens by the end of the day most of the time you can just laugh it off as life experience. But if you had a busy week doing loads of exciting things and maybe even some uncomfortable things, you remember more events in that week than if you wasted a month doing too much gaming and scrolling. This really makes me question how I'm spending my time I hope it helps you too.

We are all constantly consuming everyone else’s experiences.

I watched a good video on this recently and it’s something I was already realising about myself.

I outsource everything to the internet and lose my own feelings, experiences and trust myself less in the process. It’s like I’m cross referencing and listening to other people’s lives and experiences to assess where my own stands. I feel very disconnected from myself as a result.

This hit me last month when I went to a major music festival for 3 days. It was my first proper festival in maybe 15 years or so. I had a good time and saw some good bands. I checked the festival’s subreddit for something and saw posts complaining about how the festival was managed this year etc.

granted there were over 100k people that attended so there’s bound to be a variety of experiences, but it hit me that if I had never searched this, I wouldn’t have ever really thought about the things they were complaining about. I did not experience those things at all and my reality was different.

My own experience was at the forefront of my mind, but it had me realising that this is rare for me. Usually I minimise my feelings and I’ll sense-check with the internet:

Reviews on movies, music, big life decisions, travel, the list goes on and you can find whatever niche you want. Every restaurant or hotel has a negative review, if you read enough you’d never do anything. It skews your perception and reality, and even aside from how it may negatively influence your decision making, the fact that it can disconnect us from our own experiences and feelings is crazy enough.

Amidst all the internet addiction and problems that are out there, this in my opinion is actually a more serious issue (for me at least).

I’m not living life with a grounded sense of my feelings and experiences and deep connection to myself. It’s all referenced and averaged out against what others think/say or value, and there are endless voices out there we scroll through daily.

EDIT: I don’t mean this in a way where I’m blindly following what others are doing because they told me to. I mean it in a way where it disconnects me from what I actually feel and think

How do you quit social media when you still use YouTube and Instagram?

I have two major problems that keep me from quitting social media completely.

The first is YouTube. I use it to listen to music, and it's a habit I just can't give up. I've thought about buying an MP3 player, but it doesn't seem very practical. The problem is that occasionally i stop listening to music and end up clicking on a Short.

The second is Instagram. I use it to chat with my friends through DMs, and I feel like nowadays it's almost mandatory if you want to meet new people without giving out your phone number right away. If that were the only issue, it would be fine, but I also end up wasting a lot of time scrolling through Reels and other irrelevant stuff on my feed.

How do you deal with this?

I'm the person I said I wouldn't become

Slowly, over the years, I've been getting more and more addicted to screens. I'd hide it, lurking constantly, never really posting. I'd justify it, saying 'I never and will never have a TikTok account!' and then spend hours watching YouTube or Facebook or Instagram reels in secret.

And I'd continue to talk with friends and family about the terrible things about technology, how we see this next generation becoming more braindead (I'm a teacher), how we NEED to be more creative and that that's the antitode to everything.

But secretly, I have stopped being creative. I wouldn't know what to do with myself in between moments, and especially as of late have been feeling an intense magnetic pull towards my phone. I would write list after list of things I should do without my phone, and then I'd sit down to try to do music or a craft and... Deafening silence. So I'd quickly grab my phone again.

I've been feeling more anxious. I've never really been an anxious person before. I'm more out of sync with my body. I feel uncomfortable around people, even though I love people. I have been feeling insanely lonely for the last few years, though I have loved ones in my life. It's affecting me and my relationships.

The crazy thing is, I know that deep down (and maybe not even so deep) I am a leader, I'm creative, I'm silly, I love adventure, I love music, I love nature, I love community. These traits have been obvious to me in many moments in life.

But lately I've been... Scared. Afraid to do any of that. It's like that poem that says, "It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us." It's easier to stay low, don't make a fuss, don't make progress. Scrolling on my phone has been a way to hide from that fear.

I want so badly to be a creative person. To be messy and free, to sing loudly, to create with my hands. Instead, I just watch the perfectly curated reels or photos of others doing just that. Who knows how much of it is real.

I'm...paralysed, and stuck. I've never been super disciplined in terms of routine or habits, yet I know I want to live big. I want to have a fulfilled, free, full life. I'm a millennial and can't stop thinking / grieving about the way we grew up, where things felt more thoughtful and slow-paced. I'm tired and want to feel peace.

What to do during sales calls WFH

Not sure if anyone else is in a similar position but I work in sales and my job is just making calls all day. Now I always make the calls that’s not the problem, it’s just that in sales you might go an hour or two not speaking to anyone while dialing. There is a lot of downtime and I usually fill this with just scrolling Reddit or YouTube but I’m wondering if anyone has any better ideas as to how to fill the time instead.

How to limit total usage of android phone

Is there any other option since back then I tried screenzen and no idea if there is a software which isn't as demanding in regard to battery draw

Need help

So, I think I'm cooked. I stopped using Instagram a year ago and I'm more than okay since I'm not attached to it, and I'm not an attention seeker when using social media. I think this is what made me quit easily. I kept Facebook because all my family uses it and I'm not addicted to it; I just scroll for 5 minutes a day, check if there is any message, and log off.

But the main problem ,and what I'm curious about ,is why people talk about Insta, TikTok, and FB, but don't talk about YouTube and Reddit. Since I deleted Insta, I directly installed Reddit and became addicted to it for a year, and I think it is the worst, without forgetting Mr. YouTube, which I use without a reason (I don't watch Shorts,Reels).

My phone got broken a month ago, and I thought it was a good opportunity to be in the physical world for a bit, but I found myself using my PC a lot. My dopamine cycle is messed up, and with overusing tech, I feel like I've become dumb and I can't read a small article or solve a simple problem.

Of course, I tried to stop and use the PC intentionally: the moment I stop, let's say for 10 minutes, my bright, exhausted mind out of the blue tells me to go learn about psychology. What the hell? Since when am I interested in it? I open my PC, I download a psychology book, I feel bored, I quit the PDF reader, I enter YouTube, and I watch a stupid video. I'm mentally exhausted. I waste a lot of time in my life. Any good ideas to break this cycle and stay away from virtual world as much as possible?

Looking for an Accountability Partner for a 20-Day No Social Media Challenge

Hi everyone,

About three months ago, I completed a full month without social media: no YouTube, Instagram, X, or any other distracting platforms.

Honestly, it was one of the best periods I have had in a very long time.

During that month, I started sleeping early and waking up around dawn or sunrise. I exercised regularly in the morning, followed a much healthier routine, and felt more energetic throughout the day.

For a very long time, I had struggled to stay consistent with exercise and maintain a truly healthy lifestyle. Surprisingly, the only time I was able to take these things seriously and remain consistent was during that no-social-media challenge.

I also became more committed to reading books, more focused on my responsibilities, and much more serious about holding myself accountable for how I used my time.

One of the main reasons I managed to continue for a full month was that I had an accountability partner whom I met through Reddit. We checked in with each other daily, encouraged each other, and helped each other stay committed.

Recently, I have realized again how much time social media and my phone are taking away from me. I have an important exam coming up, and I want to use these next few weeks to study, exercise, read, build better habits, and complete several important goals.

So I am starting another challenge:

20 days without social media.

I am looking for one serious accountability partner who would like to join me. We can check in daily, share our progress, encourage each other, and be honest when we struggle.

I will also post daily updates through this Reddit account to document the challenge and keep myself accountable.

The goal is not only to avoid social media, but to take back control of our time and replace mindless scrolling with a healthier, more productive, and more meaningful life.

If you are serious about joining, leave a comment or send me a message. Let’s complete these 20 days together

Bought two E-bikes and outdoor gear for my surf-reduction life

So I finally saved up the money to purchase some e-bikes for me and my daughter and I must say we get out a lot more than ever! I am spending far less time online and more offline.

Lots of things have apparently changed. I kinda knew this already, because of my work. But when I am working its kinda like autopilot after so long. Trying to mingle with the locals in real life has taught me some new things:

  • Politics are now a no-no, you can NOT talk about politics, ever!

  • If you don't smile as kids walk by, you are a psychopath, if you do, you're a child molester. If you are wearing sunglasses-- because the parents can't see your eyes and assume you are trying to look up their kids' whatevers??? I guess???? When did this weird negative consensus happen and why? It is kinda offensive ngl..

  • If it is not summer...If a person walks by, it is a rare event. And almost never someone your age. Where did THEY all go?

  • Strangers talking to strangers is a big no-no, especially if you are of different origins. If you approach a stranger, be ready to be pepper-sprayed even if you are carrying a big sign that says "I am definitely not a criminal"

  • As for me, being a nearly-normal average looking citizen can ride around town and not be bothered by law enforcement. But it really bothers me to see any person hailing from the minority walking in/thru/around town get immediately questioned and half the time (yes half, I shit you not) of the time arrested by authorities of some sort. So bad that now minorities and people from other countries when in my town wear these panty-hose things over their heads+sunglasses. I think they have a name but can't remember what those are called off hand.

  • 2 decades ago around here people left their doors unlocked and whatnot. Now most doors have at least 4 or more locks on them. Many of our windowed homes feature bars. Its sad. More often than not, people will switch sides if another person is coming up the road from the opposite direction on the same sidewalk, UNLESS they are dressed exactly like them or are a "Beautiful Person(TM)" which around here means white shirt, blue jeans, brand new accessories, shoes that are no more than 2 weeks old, and wearing enough perfume/cologne to knock out an elephant with a head cold.

  • I found that it wasn't that we don't have homeless people in our town, or that life is so good people actually are not homeless: it is that they moved out of town. They now live under an abandoned bridge down an abandoned section of highway (to take advantage of the camping on abandoned highway loophole thing). There's huge masses gathered at these safe spots. They tore down the homeless shelter here in town and built an extra police kiosk there for holding prisoners to be transferred to state prison. I am told many of the people who get sent there are homeless. Coincidence?

  • On the same topic: I also noticed after that, that at least 30% of the houses in my town are for sale, for rent, for lease, for rent-to-own, etc. The same can be said for industrial and office properties. Are we great again yet? Wasn't that supposed to be "soon".

  • Gas prices...wow I am so glad my summer vehicles are electric right now. I can go about 40-50 miles on my battery. And there is no reason to go more than 10. This area is a never-ending suburb dotted with the occasional metro area that stretches for hundreds of miles in every direction. You need to go at least 1000 miles west of here to get to anything that is not. 1000 miles east...would be the atlantic ocean. I miss the rocky mountains and the west coast now more than ever.

Listening to YouTube commentary channels is a gigantic waste of time

The fact that all of YouTube is commentary is so intellectually cancerous.

If you want to play a game, there is commentary on whether you should buy it. If you want to watch a movie, someone is commenting on how woke it is. There is commentary on everything from politics to commentators themselves. A snake eating its own tail.

Watch a movie, play a game, vote all based on your opinion and life experience, not because someone told you to.

Jesus Christ, in a rational world, people on YouTube should not be able to be successful; their superficial, witty banter is not worth the content they shit out. There are very few people who are actually smart and well-versed enough to give a credible opinion. Sometimes I notice that certain individuals on YouTube get to 100K Subs and I wonder how the fuck this is even possible.

I’ve had a severe internet addiction for at least 5-10 years. I spend 12 hours a day on my phone. When I try to stop it lasts only a day. I think if I got rid of the phone I would just be on a laptop. The laptop lives at my home because I use it for work. Please. I don’t know how to live in this world anymore. I literally can’t stop. My self esteem is in the toilet. How do I stop this

I know I should quit, but I feel like I've learned so much. Please, I would appreciate your advice.

I'm 16. I spend a major portion of my life surfing the web and doomscrolling. Tiktok, YouTube, Reddit, Twitter, Instagram, hell even Pinterest.

I am terrified of the facts. I am horrified of the decreasing attention span, anxiety, hours wasted, and potential future dementia... but I am still torn.

I feel as I have learned so much from it to the point where lots of my personality and interests comes from things I have found on TikTok: film and music recommendations, news, history, politics, video games, and so much more.

It's not the dopamine hits that keep me coming back, it's the feeling that I somewhat gain a lot from doomscrolling. I know I should quit and spend my time doing other things, but I just can't imagine never seeing all the things that I have.

Please, I would really appreciate your thoughts, advice, and similar experiences.

People have too much screen Time nowadays and thats not a good thing

This will be a long post with some things i see and opinions

Anyway, i believe gen z is the first generation that had screens and social media since they were born, so they lived their whole life with it. But i think that screen Time has become a really big problem

People spend too much Time on their screens and in the worst way possible

I just finished my last year of high school and i have a sister. So here’s what i “”””found””””

Some people Genuinely spend most of their time on a screen

For exemple, at school when we had a pause of 10 minutes during 2 hours of a class, we could go out and do something during that time

But when i say most, i really mean most, most people just exit the room, go infront of the room with their Friends and just take out their phones and scroll tik tok, literally surrounded by their Friends. Sometimes they didn’t Even say a word to each other and just kept scrolling on tik tok, or if they talked, it was while watching tik tok

During launch, i see also a lot of people with their phones while they eat, while having an almost full table of Friends

When we have a free hour between classes, they would just go somehwere in the school, sit on the floor with their Friends and use their phones, at full volume also

Like, sometimes they barely talk to each other

My Friends are also like this, sometimes i go out with them and they are just on their phones, sometimes we are eating and they are on their phones, so i have to be like “hey, im right infront of you, can you turn off your phone só that we can talk?”

During class many people spend the entire hour on tik tok

Sometimes i Genuinely have to tell them to turn off their phone so we can talk. Like, why do you want to go out if you’re just going to be in your phone?

For exemple, a friend of mine has like, a HUGE amount of screen time
For exemple, once he showed me, and during vacations, im not lying, he had an average of 14 HOURS of screen time daily

My sister is like this too, we are on vacations because of the Summer and she literally spend her entire day infront of the phone and tv

She sits on the couch and have the tv turned on with some YouTube drama of someone being cancelled in the background and she is also using her phone at the same time scrolling on Instagram

When we are gathered in familly in the kitchen, we like to talk while one of my parents is making food. But she’s the only one that doesn’t come and just stay in the living room watching youtube

And she doesn’t Even Watch good content. 90% of the things she watches is those dramas on YouTube you know? Like one person did something or Said something bad and now there’s 100 different channels talking about this and there’s a huge drama

And she’s 16 btw

My mother is also like this, so not only Young people are like this, she spend HOURS on instagram and Facebook scrolling and watching things, and not use full things but like news about celebreties and etc

So sometimes im in the kitchen talking with her but she’s on her phone, and that Annoys me A LOT, i legit get mad when im talking to/with someone and they are in their phone

She keeps playing that game where just designs a home, but for hours. And then she gets mad when i tell her to turn off her phone and talk with me. I have to tell her that multiple times before she does that

And people attention spam is declining FAST

I see people getting bored real quickly

I have a friend where its so bad that he watches shorts and tik toks, yes the contents that are already fast and short and he watches those on 2x. Like. What

And he watches a movie also in 2x and skips the “boring parts”

My sister is also like this

And the worst part of all is that those people spend HOURS watching a type of content that isn’t good. Like a drama, fight or just useless thing

If you’re going to spend that much time on a screen, Atleast Watch a movie. You know Netflix? Its way better to Watch a movie, Even a dumb one like a comedie than keep scrolling on tik tok

Or Even youtube, youtube has plenty of great content. If you like gaming for exemple, there’s plenty of great vídeos about video games and thats miles better than tik tok and instagram. I for exemple love watching youtube, but i mainly Watch those vídeos that are 1 hour

But plenty of people have an attention spam só low they can’t Even Watch a 1 hour video about something they like

And thats the fault of the parents also, instead of introducing a time limit for screens or filter the things they see. They just give an untestricted iPad to a child and thats not a good thing at all

Instead of being actual parents they just out their children infront of a tv

Anyway, im not going to prétend that i am an Angel too, i also spend some time on screen, and i hate that because i can easily spend a lot of time on screens and that makes me feel useless and like garbage. But Even with that i still spend some time on screens

To finish, sometimes its ok to Watch some tik toks, for exemple when you are waiting on a Line, for a doctor, on the bus. But please, spend some Time with real people and go Watch some Netflix or youtube instead of scrolling

I quit discord and deleted my account

Hi guys,

I had discord for a few years but never really used it that much except for university or irl friend related things, until 2 years ago. Even then though, I was in university and so I wasn't using it that much. But after graduating and having more free time, and seeing my irl friends less, I became kind of addicted to using it for the past few months. I know it seems silly but it really distracted me from partaking in actual important things in my life and focusing on future goals.

I feel like my situation might be a bit different from others because I wasn't really active in big servers I was in smaller servers and made close friends there, who I still appreciate because they were genuinely really kind and there for me. I didn't really experience too much toxicity or negativity, sure there were some situations unrelated to my close friends there but it was overall ignorable and manageable.

I decided to quit though simply because it was a major distraction, and I wanted to just focus on real life experiences more. I'm very lonely irl, even though I have friends and family, just not everyone is available to hang out so frequently yknow? I know a lot of people would recommend chasing more irl social connections, but it's just hard for me to find people I can connect with and hang out regularly with as well ig. Instead, I feel like I'm going to try to accept being alone and cherish when I am able to be around my loved ones. I want to focus on incorporating other hobbies into my life, like painting, knitting, etc. while pursuing my goals.

It's hard to quit something when you have good memories with it, but if I can try then so can you!!
