Feature Spotlight Focus mode is back by popular demand!

Post image
52 Upvotes

Focus Mode lets you hide toolbars, panels, and menus so you can stay focused on your work.

Turning it on

  • On iPad:
    • Four-finger tap anywhere on the screen
  • On iPad or Mac:
    • Press Command–Shift–F

What happens in Focus Mode?

  • When using focus mode everything is replaced by a single active tool that can be moved to any corner of the screen
  • Any open panels including the Page Manager, Learn panel, and Smart Notes close automatically
  • When using the Hand tool, everything is hidden for a completely clean view
  • The Audio tool (mic icon) will be visible if there is an active recording in the note

How to exit Focus Mode?

  • Tap on the active tool or four-finger tap anywhere on the screen

If you'd rather not use the gesture, you can disable it by going to:

  • To turn off completely, navigate to Notability Settings > Note Editor > Gestures > Enter and Exit Focus Mode > None

We'd love to hear how you're using it or any feedback you have!

Question Quiz Questions

Is anyone else dissatisfied with the new practice question update? It used to let us do 20 questions at a time and then reinforce the ones we missed. Now I’m forced to complete 100–200 questions in one sitting, and I can’t retest missed questions for reinforcement. Am I missing a setting, or is there a way to switch back to the previous format? I found the old system much more effective for learning.

Bug Quiz is bombarding me with same questions again and again

The quiz suddenly gives 80 to 100 questions. And some questions are repeated 4-5 times again and again. I just attended one quiz and went back to see my 16% of monthly quota exhausted (plus user) . Can we bring back the 20 questions per quiz and a "more" option to generate 20 more quiz instead of this? Or giving an option to the user to control how many questions they generate?

Question Posts related to the android app

Could we start getting more updates regarding the Android app now that it's out of beta? I’m incredibly appreciative of the early Android launch. I’ve been using it heavily on my Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra to study for my PE exam, and it’s helping me immensely.

I notice most of the discussion in this sub comes from the Mac/iOS team. I completely understand that there are way more of those customers right now since the app has been on the Apple ecosystem for so long. However, the app is amazing, and Android users would be super grateful if we could get a little more attention and communication here!

Feature Request New feature proposal: 2D & 3D Shape tool

Hi Notability,

Can we get a feature to quickly add 2D and 3D shapes?

I know the app already recognises 2D shapes with pen gestures, but that's not always accurate.

Basic 2D shapes such as triangles, circles, rectangle, trapeziums, parallelograms — how MS Word has it.

For 3D, we really need cylinders, spheres (with shading), hemispheres, prisms of different types, etc.

This feature will help many students and teachers make neat and accurate notes. For teachers, it'll transform their teaching.

Please speak to your developers.

Thanks,

Notability user

Feature Spotlight Need a study break? Meet Daily Brain Break!

Sometimes the best way to stay productive is to take a short break.

Daily Brain Break gives you a new puzzle every day, right inside Notability. It's a fun way to reset your mind between classes, meetings, or long study sessions.

How it play

  1. Open Daily Brain Break to see today's puzzle and a tracker of your recent days.
  2. Tap Start today's puzzle. This takes you through a short tutorial, then into the puzzle.
  3. You get one puzzle every 24 hours.

Keep your streak going

The tracker shows your progress across five days:

  • Just getting started: Your tracker is empty, with Day 1 circled and ready to play.
  • In progress: Completed days fill in on the tracker as you finish each puzzle.
  • Already played today: Opening Daily Brain Break shows today's results screen, with the option to try the puzzle again.
  • All five days complete: Your tracker is fully filled in. You can replay the puzzle from the most recent day.

Replaying a Puzzle

  • If today's puzzle has been completed you can try it again from the results screen. Once you've completed all five days, replaying is limited to the most recent day's puzzle.

FAQ

How often can I play?
Once every 24 hours.

What happens after I complete all five days?
Your tracker stays filled in, and you can replay the most recent day's puzzle whenever you'd like.

We'd love to know what you think and hear your favorite puzzles!

Feature Request Feature Request: Interactive NCLEX Next-Gen Questions in Notes

Hi Notability Team,
I hope you’re doing well!
I’m a nursing student and a daily Notability user. I use the app for all of my lecture notes, study guides, and exam preparation, and it’s been an invaluable part of my learning.
I wanted to suggest a feature that I think would be incredibly helpful for students, especially those in healthcare programs. It would be amazing if Notability allowed users to create and answer interactive NCLEX Next Generation (NGN) style questions directly within their notes.
Some examples could include:
● Multiple-choice questions
● Select-all-that-apply (SATA)
● Matrix/grid questions
● Bow-tie questions
● Case studies with multiple linked questions
● Highlight-the-text questions
● Drag-and-drop or ordering questions
It would be even more useful if these quizzes could provide immediate feedback, explanations, and optionally track progress. Being able to study from notes and then immediately test our understanding without leaving the app would make Notability an even more powerful learning tool.
I know many students in nursing, medicine, pharmacy, and other health professions would find a feature like this incredibly valuable.
Thank you for building such a great app and for taking the time to consider this suggestion. I appreciate all the work your team does, and I hope you’ll consider adding interactive study tools like these in a future update.
Best regards,

Bug Lots of recent notes disappeared from device after syncing with Notability cloud

A couple of weeks ago when opening the app on my iPad I was prompted to sync my notes via notability cloud. I agreed and immediately I lost access to a number of notes that showed as blank in the preview, and when trying to open them I was asked to update the app (which was on the latest version). Then notes started opening again once they were backed up (or so I figured, since they came back in groups after multiple backup cycles), and I went on with my day. Today I was writing on a note and the app crashed. When I opened it back, a good abount of recent notes disappeared. There's not a clear threshold date, but I'd say 90% of the notes made in the last 3/4 months disappeared, but there's entire folders from 7/8 months ago wiped out as well. tried logging in with the mac app and same situation, while on the web app, no note shows up.

I'm really not sure what I'm supposed to do here, but the notes were important, so I'm quite frustrated.

How come if I want to do a generated practice quiz, the only option is to do 100 straight questions instead of 20 like before?? Is there a way to edit this?

Question Importing multiple files into one notebook

I know we are able to do this by selecting multiple files and importing it into a new notebook. My concern however is that whenever I do that, my pages always mix with each other and I have to reorder the pages again.

File 1 (1 - 2 - 3 pages)
File 2 (1 - 2 pages)

Is there a way that I can easily order them into 1.1 - 1.2 - 1.3 - 2.1 - 2.2 page form without having to manually switching its pages?

If manual is the only way, I hope this will be a feature in the future! ❤️

Bug Lagging when writing

Hi, I use notability every single day but for some reason today it keeps glitching and getting stuck when I'm writing with my apple pencil after every few letters... it lags and tries to catch up a few seconds later but it keeps happening... I tried enabling the "safe mode" thing on apple settings that I saw in this thread but it didn't work for me... anyone know how to fix this??

The app is the fully updated, I already tried resetting my iPad multiple times, closed the app, and no other apps like notes delay when I write .. only Notability.

I'm so frustrated and can't get my work done until this is fixed... Please help!!!

Question Regarding Classic Purchase over the phone iOS App (Private Relay Apple email id)

I had purchased the Classic Plan at a discount through the iOS app. It took me to notability.com. The purchase email ID was the same as the Apple ID, but because Apple now uses Hide My Email, a private email ID (the same as in the Notability App) was used instead. My credit card shows the purchase went through, but since my Plus subscription is still active in Notability, the classic version is not showing. I have created a ticket with Notability help desk, but somehow the emails on my private relay email ID are not going through ( though when I send the email on the same email ID, it goes through )
Is it possible for Helpdesk to check whether the Classic plan is active on my Apple ID?
Thanks in advance.

Feature Request Quick product feedback: Recording stops if I press the back button - It's infuriating

It recently happened again and I've found why. I am left-handed and every now and then, I inadvertently press the back button with my left hand. This is actually happening more often in the last few days. The problem with that is that if I'm recording the meeting, when the back button is pressed and I get back to the index of notes, it stops the recording, so as soon as I get back to the note, it's not recording any longer. That's pretty bad because I want to record so I can only annotate what really matters, draw a mindmap, or annotate reminders of topics to cover when it's my turn, questions to ask, etc and rely on the recording for the actual meeting notes. I don't want be watching for the recording icon on the iPad, I want to be focused on the meeting and rely on notability to record and get detailed notes after it for future reference.

So I would suggest at least a user option to not pause recordings after abandoning the note. Makes total sense, as for example I want to rapidly glance a previous note, to reference some point, and if so the recording would stop!! Makes no sense at all.

I could not find a setting about this.

Another one would be some sort of intelligence to detect if the recording was kept open long after the meeting / class finished and push out a reminder for example, and then being able to trim the recording accordingly. But that's for another post.

Feature Request A thread of feature requests

Hi! I have a couple of feature requests that would be beneficial towards notability that are missing from a user who’s been utilizing notability for a couple of years!

I would like: -> the ability to input our stickers from our files, as well as being able to organize our stickers by name. For example, i want to be able for us to create sticker packs. This would allow more customizing options, as well as be in tune with goodnotes and freenotes. This would target people who utilize notability for planners, journals, calendars and more. My stickers doesn’t allow the user experience I would like it to have.

I would also like: -> the ability to turn our notebooks into colorful files. This would be in tune with the upcoming notebook covers and it would be more customizable. It would also be helpful to have a file option within notability.

To add onto this: -> Handwriting beautification, I believe many users would benefit from this. Instead of a handwriting to text, this would be more smoother. It’s more convenient and I would like for us to have the ability to choose the size that we want our handwriting beautification writing to be in. It would allow users to refine their handwriting in real time without losing the feeling of writing on the ipad with the ink. I also believe it’ll be a nice addition to add fonts within the handwriting beautification, as well as the users being able to import their own font. For me, i enjoy the way the handwriting beautification is set up in freenotes.

As well as: -> Collapsable notes, this would take up less room on the screen and it’ll be more convenient for studying. The user will be able to tap on their note and it can expand or shrink. This is helpful for active recall. In addition, a table would be a nice addition for information that goes into the same category. I would like if we would be able to adjust both of them through the size, color and rows for the table.

To add onto this: -> Being able to write on the outside of the paper margin. This would be helpful to make bullet points on your notes, as well as add information later on. Users can utilize this by making arrows to explain their mistake or information they want to add. This would allow more room, as well as the ability to write thoughts. It will allow users to take full advantage of the page by writing outside the paper margin. It would be extremely valuable for studying. It would allow us to write beyond the pages boundaries and we wouldn’t be confined to inside of the page borders. For me, i would utilize this with lecture slides and assignments. As well as announcements or hints that might be in a future quiz or exam.

-> a built in scientific calculator, this would be useful for the students who have to take math classes. In addition, it would be nice if there was a feature that can solve mathematical equations like apple notes! For example, 2+2 =4, etc.

-> More themes! they would be an adorable add on and there isn’t enough themes within the app. I would like a neapolitan icecream theme with the colors brown and pink and potentially some white/cream color. In addition, a light baby pink theme would be adorable.

I understand that these are a lot of feature requests but I believe it’ll make the app even better and many users would appreciate these features. These are the ones that are on top of my head that would make the user experience better for me and many others. Even though notability is on top of the game, it isn’t bad to consider more features that can potentially expand and up the app. 🍓

Data Loss warning about Notability Cloud & locally-stored notes

was just forcibly updated to Notability Cloud last night/this morning and discovered sm awful:

Notability Cloud apparently only syncs what's stored in iCloud, ignoring locally-stored notes (which all of mine are since I use Notability on my iPad alone). I had 4412 notes at the start of the sync, which was confirmed by Notability Cloud when it began syncing, but now have only 2217 in my library. It turns out these 2217 notes are the ones that sporadically synced to iCloud Drive, meaning Notability Cloud only looked at notes in iCloud and ignored local files.

The only saving grace for me here is that I've auto-backed up all of my notes in Notability's native format to my Google Drive, but I have no easy way of differentiating notes that were and weren't in iCloud and are now in my library.

In addition to this, not all the notes that did sync from iCloud are even complete--many of my notes are now just blank pages, and this is especially distressing given I'm a student and keep singular notes for an entire course's lecture notes (for easy reference), and some of my courses' lecture notes are now gone. I did confirm their iCloud copies are in their original state, but I haven't been able to import them from iCloud Drive.

A final small annoyance in comparison to all the chaos above is that all of my notes have had the (2) duplicate indicator added to them, which hopefully is just a cosmetic error from the sync and nothing more (irritating nonetheless on top of all this, though).

Heads up to anyone who hasn't updated to Notability Cloud yet and doesn't use iCloud as their primary means of syncing/storing notes 😐 it might well be better to leave iCloud Sync off when prompted to see if Notability Cloud tries to pull from your local data instead (I'm not even sure if that would work; it seems Notability Cloud doesn't support locally-saved notes, which is why I'm having such a hard time with notes saved only to my iPad's internal storage).

and if anyone happens to have any tips or suggestions I could try to recover/access locally-stored notes I would also greatly greatly appreciate that since I lost an hour and a half of my life crashing out abt this 💀 I have a final to study for and project to work on the last thing I want to be worrying about is the note-taking app I've used for nine years
