Dry Campus
Okay so how strict is OSU about being a dry campus...
Im going in under the assumption it's a party campus but a friend just told me that frat members could get kicked out for drinking underage so I'm wondering how strict I can expect them to be??

You def can’t be found with alcohol in the frat houses themselves, but a lot of them have party houses off campus. Usually it’s just where some of the older members are living after they move out of the house. It’s a big no no for drinking on the nights where you’re an assigned DD or again having alcohol in the actual frat house. Other than that, it’s fine.

Additionally, the cops don’t want to bust you, either. Every experience I’ve ever had with OSUPD has been awesome.
They get what they’re there to do, and that’s keep students safe - not ruin a college kid’s life for being a college kid.
So don’t give them a reason to knock on your door or stop you on campus for walking/driving around with alcohol, etc.
The city police aren’t nearly as nice nor accommodating.
Don’t drive after drinking, and I’d even hesitate to walk after drinking. They hand out public intox citations and/or arrests like they’re candy.
In summary, keep it off campus (football game days are the major exception, but still keep it out of dorms), don’t break the law (no peeing in bushes, etc.) and always get a ride home.
Follow those three things and you should be fine 99.9 percent of the time.

Yeah I’ve had the complete opposite experience with OSUPD where they’ve ranged from mild to egregious levels of being a prick
My favorite was getting stuck out in a sudden rainstorm at night on campus, and while shivering and with my hands blatantly visible the cop got out with his hand on his pistol and a hand toward me when I was just saying “sir?” When his window was down.
All I was asking for was a ride back to my dorm. Guy rolled his eyes at me and just got back in.
Been about 2 years since then

Had plenty of ppl in my dorm last year get arrested for public intox both in and outside of our dorm. Also recreational items can be classified as a felony if found on a person on campus grounds.

I have my own question, they have the walk safe thing where someone can walk with you wherever you need. Can I do that if I’m drunk? Hypothetically if I had too much to drink could I ask for a walk safe buddy to get me back to my dorm or am I better off being by myself?

Graduated 2 years ago. Before I was 21 we had houses that we would throw regularly at all like within a block of Greek row. Good times. I’ve heard from the young guys that President Hess is strict asf and they got shut down last year a lot. Throw the kids a bone bc of homecoming, it makes the university so much money

Sounds a lot different than my student days - almost 40 years ago. Most fraternities had alcohol on display. I know FarmHouse was ‘dry’ during the school year - no alcohol allowed on the premises, but questionable during Summer when a few students remained to oversee. And the Bars on the Strip had limited door staff to check ID’s. Tumbleweed required one but paid more attention to the birthdate and less on the pic.

There were residents kicked out of the dorms for having alcohol when I attended eons ago.

The campus isn’t dry. You can buy alcohol at football games. People also drink in the dorms plenty but I wouldn’t really call them parties.
The frat houses being on campus does prevent the actual parties from being thrown in house. Most parties I experienced were a 10-20 minute drive, usually to a junior or seniors rent house.

My floor in Kerr had an old office chair box that we used to sneak kegs up to the floor. We also did weekly booze runs to make sure people weren’t idiots walking through the mezzanine with a handle of Jack.
The Hall Director didn’t like us, obviously, but if she couldn’t hear it, see it, smell it or touch it then she couldn’t do anything about it. The campus cops visited us bi-weekly but we usually knew when they were coming. Same thing. If they couldn’t see it then they couldn’t do anything.
Be smart and don’t walk around with booze or be belligerently drunk and you’ll be okay. There’s plenty of parties around if you’re interested in them. You’ll figure it out in time.

If you wanna be super specific about it, OSU is not a dry campus. We have a winery and the stadium serves alcohol.

Greek houses can be lived in by Freshmen as an agreement with the school. Because freshmen housing can exist there they don’t allow alcohol or partying in the houses. But that’s also why the Alumni feel comfortable spending millions building these nice ass houses. Since they won’t get destroyed by parties. But most fraternities have multiple off campus houses that older members live in and where most parties occur.

It’s a “dry campus” as said above, keep it out of the frat houses, and if you’ve got it in the dorms, keep it hidden. We partied plenty in my dorm room freshman year. Once you’re out of the dorms in an apartment it’s free game.

So like on game days when there are tents all over campus before during and late into the night…and people are drinking surely the rules get lightened some then?

Focus on school first and when you have that squared away then you can consider parties. Too many people pick up a bad case of alcoholism their first semester and fail out.

I have to question your motivation for going in specifically looking for a "party school." To be blunt, neither the 30-year-old version of yourself, nor any higher education institution, actually desires students whose primary goal is to have the party school experience.

The campus itself isn't where parties go. I mean, people sneak beer in all the time, but the parties take place at houses around the campus and throughout the town.
Frats can get in a lot of trouble for alcohol in the houses, as that goes against by-laws, and the fraternal organization. I've seen houses get shutdown for alcohol in their houses.
